What's the secret?

I promise not to use your advice and get hurt... I%26#39;m just curious. When there are big waves at Waimea or Pipeline, what%26#39;s the timing secret for getting in and out? The waves at Waimanalo Bay are about the right size for me. I know there must be a certain trick to being out with bigger waves. Anyone care to explain it? Do you just dive to the bottom and wait for a certain feeling? Then what?

What's the secret?

Yeah, that%26#39;s it. You dive to the bottom and wait ...!!

What's the secret?

You know, dear ... I don%26#39;t think we are the right people to ask.

at Pipeline there is a riptide channel to the north of the big break where they paddle out, waves do not break there and there is a current to pull you out. At Waimea the waves usually do not break across the entire bay so they paddle to the side. When they get the really big waves like 25 to 30 feet they get what they call a close out set that fills the entire bay. At that point it gets very dangereous, they will go under an upcoming wave but about the time they surface another one is on top of them. That is when they bring out the jetskis and helicopters to pull people out.

Not all big waves are surfable, sometimes they just have to sit it out. Sunset is a beach that handles very large waves but is also one that has routes to paddle out.

If you ever go in the winter check it out, really an incredible thing to watch. Pipeline breaks very close to the beach so it is a great viewing place, plus they will have a bunch of professional photographers. It is not marked from the road, it is the beach parking across from the school a few minutes past waimea bay.

Thanks, longboard. That%26#39;s exactly what I was looking for. Makes sense now.

One of these years, I%26#39;m going to have to make it in the winter to see it hitting hard. We usually go in October or April. Pipeline has been interesting, but nothing like what I%26#39;ve seen on youtube (surf comp). I%26#39;ve never even seen someone surf at Waimea. When I%26#39;ve been it%26#39;s been swimmably calm or nasty shore break. I know it depends on the offshore storms, but generally, are the best waves between December and February?

Thanks again.

The bigger sets can start arriving as early as mid-November. That%26#39;s when the holding pattern for the Triple Crown events usually starts.

Blender...

Be ye careful. Every so often a few visitors are washed away by a rogue wave which suddenly makes a seemingly safe viewing location untenable; or, folks don%26#39;t realize how significant the undertow is from so much water running back into the ocean that they get sucked out in ankle deep wash.

On a big day, be cognizant of where the locals are viewing from and don%26#39;t play on the fringes unconcerned.

Big waves always make the traffic worse along the North Shore, and if it is a weekend it can become near gridlock. No parking within a mile of Waimea of Ehukai, three and four deep at Sunset, and places where the road can be closed form time to time due to wave action and associated flooding.

A lot of the traffic snarl can be avoided on a high surf day if you go out from Waikiki up the Windward side of the island, instead of through Central Oahu like most everyone else, and go along the North Shore from east to west (Turtle Bay towards Haleiwa). Plus the views are awesome.

Paddling out to a break on big days takes skill, experience and a watchful eye studying the set pattern and currents before heading out; and it can be just as difficult to get back in. But the hardest part for newbies is learning to fight the urge to inhale when breaking the surface after diving under a wave or wiping out, because there may be a foot of foam you end up sucking in.

I get a bad feeling from your post. As a Hawaii travel author and Big Island resident, I have been to every island multiple times, and I am always astonished to see people venture down to the shore when mammoth waves are washing over the rocks, or allow toddlers to wander down to the shorebreak unattended, as waves thunder in.

People mistake nature for Disneyland, and pay the ultimate price. Champion surfers have died at Waimea and Pipeline, after surfing hundreds of waves there. Hundreds of local fishermen who grew up in Hawaii have been swept to their deaths.

I write this knowing you probably think you%26#39;re the exception...they all do.

richardsullivan - don%26#39;t get a bad feeling from my post. I stated that I was just curious. I don%26#39;t think I%26#39;m the exception. I can take a look at the way surfers are built and the way I%26#39;m built and realize there is a difference. I%26#39;ve been to the surf spots on the north shore multiple times and never gotten wet. I love to swim, scuba, bodysurf and boogie board... but you%26#39;ll never see me near the water at Pipeline or Sandy%26#39;s. No worries. I%26#39;m just fascinated that people can manage it, so thought I would ask what they%26#39;re doing. Thanks for your concern. I promise to be a good girl.

Kauai scenery.

Ok, maybe we can keep this thread going for just a bit longer than the last one about the Movie...Tropic Thunder.

Is the Kauai scenery THAT good in the movie, to make it worth going to? I need to feed 3 of my addictions: Hawaii, popcorn, and movies!

Anyone know what area(s) of Kauai the filming was done? Or was it scattered around?

Thanks. jebett, did you get to it?

Kauai scenery.

I ran out of time, but I did drive by the motel where some scenes were shot. Koloagirl wrote about the movie location in the tropic thunder thread. It is really beautiful scenery so if you are in the mood for popcorn and many gorgeous views of Kauai go for it. Ben Stiller probably says thank you. (he is a part time resident).

Kauai scenery.

Looks like most of the filming was way up on private land, so you will not have access to it.

We hike all over this island, and Erica thought she saw a place or two, but more than likely just the same species of lush jungle foilage.

The scenery in the movie is pretty amazing, as this island is a lush green magical place.

We had a great time, lots of laughs, and totally no message on life. Just impossible fun and humor.

Now, get out the guide books and find some hikes, or guided tours into the green of our island.

Have fun and enjoy

Denny

The scenery was great, movie was ok. I took a picture during our flight with Wings Over Kauai of an area tha was used. I am trying to get my pictures up on webshots for all to see. Hopefully by this weekend....along with my trip report on TA.

We went and saw it last week. I wouldn%26#39;t go just to view Kauai scenery. It%26#39;s pretty much all filmed outside but you aren%26#39;t going to say ';Hey, I saw that before!'; The movie was really funny though, and I%26#39;d recommend going to see it. We went to an early show, bought a popcorn, 2 sodas and paid less for our tickets then the snacks cost. :(

Highlights from our 10 day trip to the Big Island

Highlights from our ten days on the Big Island:

Lodging:

Kamuela Inn, Waimea, 2 nights

www.hawaii-inns.com/hi/wai/kin/index.html

I had been a little nervous about this one given the decidedly mixed reviews on Tripadvisor, was reassured by one of KK’s comments. In fact, our rooms in the new wing were just fine. Clean, cute even, a cut above the average Best Westerns that we have come to know and love on numerous car trips out west.

Pele’s Plantation, Chalet Kilauea Collection, Volcano, 1 night

www.volcano-hawaii.com/pele-plantation.html

It was really a challenge to find a one-night rental over Labor Day weekend. This one was expensive but it worked.

Kona Beach House/Seaside Zen Cottage, 7 nights

konabeachhouse.com/threebedtour/seasidehome.…

See previous review.

Because check-out time at the house was at 11 a.m. and our plane didn’t leave until almost 10 that night, we had to figure out how to spend our last day. We decided to make a dinner reservation at the Hualalai Grille and hang out at the Four Seasons for the afternoon. That was eye-opening.

Food:

Our best meals of this trip were at Merriman%26#39;s in Waimea, the Hualalai Grille at the Four Seasons, and a tiny Thai restaurant, the Garden Snack Café, that serendipity led us to in Hilo. Our Thai food was so good that, since we had leftovers, we ordered some pineapple fried rice, and had dinner at our cottage in Volcano. While in Kailua-Kona, we had dinners at the Big Island Grill (best dinner out during our week here—the mud pie will forever be a part of family lore), the Royal Jade Garden (perfectly adequate Chinese), Boston Basil%26#39;s (not recommended), and Teshima%26#39;s (thought the shrimp tempura was over-breaded but other items were good liked the atmosphere). Besides the Garden Snack Café, we had very good lunches at the Coffee Shack in Captain Cook, the Roadside Café in Kainaliu, and the Kohala Coffee Mill in Hawi. Enjoyed good coffee and hot chocolate at the Holuakoa Café Espresso Bar in Holualoa. Eating our Scandinavian shaved ice overlooking Kailua Bay was fun.

The farmers%26#39; market in Volcano was excellent, and the one in Keauhou was a strong runner-up.

On Thursday afternoons, the Kona Historical Society just south of Kealakekua sells Portuguese sweet bread baked in a traditional stone oven. A salesperson at the Kimura Lauhala store recommended it to us, and it was a great tip.

Best shopping:

Sig Zane in Hilo, a beautiful store, high class and high quality clothing and accessories

the Sandal Stop and its sister store next door in Kailua-Kona---Chris Kealoha was particularly helpful

the Kona coffee, purchased many, haven%26#39;t tried them all yet; bought from the Big Island Candy store, the Hula Bean store in Kailua-Kona, Blue Sky, the Holualoa Coffee farm, and the Kona Lisa (couldn%26#39;t resist) stall at the Keauhou farmers%26#39; market

Big Island Candies, especially the chocolate-dipped macadamia nut shortbread

Touring highlights:

the burros on the road through Waikoloa Village on our way from the airport to Waimea—the car rental agent had warned us, but it was still quite a surprise to encounter them in the middle of the pitch black road

the hike to Pololu Valley

the Halemaumau Crater glowing red in the night

the turtles in the lagoon at Zen Cottage

Snorkling at Kahalu’u Beach Park

the incredible variety of cultural, historical, and natural sights— Pu’uhonua o Honaunau, beautiful churches and temples, the ranch country, sugar plantation towns, the coffee farms, the volcanoes and reefs, and more

the warmth and welcome of everyone we met on the Big Island and the amazing courtesy of its drivers

Highlights from our 10 day trip to the Big Island

Great report, Bon Voyage. We are leaving tomorrow (YAAAY!!) and I am printing it out to take with me. Lots of great recommendations. Thanks for posting it!

Highlights from our 10 day trip to the Big Island

Aloha, Great report! Many will benefit from it.

I agree that the farmers%26#39; market in Volcano is wonderful and I love Sig Zane%26#39;s.

Did the ';Kona Nightingales'; sing to you (';the burros on the road through Waikoloa Village on our way from the airport to Waimea';)?

Thanks, pdxjoanne and AlohaAdeline!

And best wishes, pdxjoanne, for a great trip!

AA, I don%26#39;t remembered being serenaded by the ';Kona nightingales,'; but that may have been because I was the driver and very focused on getting to Waimea in one piece (our plane was late and it was after 11 PM).

Nice trip report.

I did a quick search on the Pololu Valley and it looks very pretty. I read that it takes abbout 20 minutes to get down to the beach. Do you remember ho wlong it took to get back up? We will be on BI with our kids next summer.

Treepalm, for us, getting back up was way easier than getting down. Took about 20 minutes.

7 days vs 10 days

my mom and I are arguing over which we should do. what do you all think? we haven%26#39;t been to Maui in 10 years and I don%26#39;t know when we%26#39;ll go back. I want to go for 10...but she%26#39;s worried about the cost.

btw, we%26#39;re staying at Ka%26#39;anapali Beach Hotel. :)

7 days vs 10 days

The biggest cost of going to Maui Is the airfare, I just returned from a 10 day 11 night trip, your two travel days don%26#39;t really count, after 7 days I wasn%26#39;t ready to leave after 10 I was. If you really want to cut costs rent a condo (FROM THE OWNER) you can cook some meals and pack your own lunch saves alot of $$$$ Just my 2 cents. Have a GR8 trip

7 days vs 10 days

I Agree, last time we only stayed for 7 nights and were trying to see what the cost would be to stay longer. We leave next week for 10 days with kids and I%26#39;m excited to enjoy a leisurely stay and the maui way...relax and do what pleases you. There is a day or two of relaxing by the pool or whatever...and still plenty of time to do all your itenerary items. Just my 2 cents. KBH is great place to stay...if we didn%26#39;t have kids I%26#39;d be in a hotel. Have a wonderful time...book 10 days..you won%26#39;t regret it. Either way, you%26#39;ll have Maui depression as soon as you start packing to head back home!

Nobody ever had too much time on Maui! I second the idea of skipping a hotel -- one room, one bathroom -- and getting a condo. You%26#39;d have SPACE, two baths, a kitchen (no actual %26#39;cooking%26#39; required), a private lanai.

If I%26#39;m awake at night I want to be able to get up, go into the LR, make a cup of hot chocolate in the kitchen and read without waking my DH.

I agree I think 10 days, yes you can eat in alot or eat on the cheap and maybe 1 nice dinner and do get a condo by owner that does save alot of money.. when are you going?

You need to make up for those 10 years. I%26#39;d go for 14 days :)

last november went for 7 days with extended family. we were pretty busy and 7 days was too short.

leaving TOMORROW for 14 days with just my DW to do nothing. We%26#39;ll let you know.

:-)

We always do 9 - 10 days and are never ready to come back. If you can swing it, you won%26#39;t regret the extra time.

we%26#39;re going sometime in very early January. Probably leaving sometime between the 1st and the 3rd.

I agree go for 10-12 days!!

I just got back from a 7 day w/ two grammas and 3 kids and DH. it feltlike it went by soo fast. I was trying to add ina few days but it got close to the end of summer, prices etc that we did a week . but next time for sure going for at least 10 days. you can save like others said eating in a few extra days. like next time our condo has bbqs and instead of eating out and rushing ot get ready etc i plan on doing a few nights just bbqing and maybe eating b%26#39;fast or lunch out on those days. we cut back by eating just dinners out and bought food for bfast and lunch --

it will all work out in the end.

Many resorts are offering 5th night free, some even the third night free. If you are not already locked into a place to stay, look for one of those deals. That way you get to stay for 10 and pay for a week.

  • Better hotel rate advice needed

I%26#39;m booked at a certain hotel for a particular package (booked this months ago and paid 2 nights deposit). I now see better rates for packages that are just as good if not better for those same dates. How should I go forward seeing about getting this better rate? I booked these myself - no travel agencies etc. Do I just call the hotel? Thought I%26#39;d turn to you guys for advice before anything else! Thx!

    Better hotel rate advice needed

Hard to say. What was the cancellation policy for your reservation? Most that we have for next month were 30 days no penalty...if you have the same just cancel then rebook.

    Better hotel rate advice needed

    My confirmation email states:

Cancellation Policy: CXL BY 3PM HST 72HRS PRIOR/CC CHRGD 2NT DEP

So I guess I can do that. Do I tell them this is what I%26#39;m doing %26amp; rebook with them right there?! I%26#39;m all for being honest %26amp; upfront, just not sure how they feel about it %26amp; certainly don%26#39;t want to mess up my current reservy! Hm .. maybe I have my husband book the new one %26amp; then cancel the old.

Why beat around the bush? Just call and say you found better rate and would like that rate.

Done! Awesome! 2 nights free and a lower rate to begin with - still includes the breakfast as in my other reservation! So glad I%26#39;ve been reading this forum as someone else posted about this promotion! Will post thx comment on that thread!

I just did the same with the Hyatt on Waikiki. They were very nice about it!

Least expensive place to park car for long periods

I%26#39;m staying at Hilton Hawaiian Village for 11 days, and wonder if there are cheaper places within walking distance to park my car than the $24 valet parking and $20 self parking offered by the hotel. Thanks!

Least expensive place to park car for long periods

The Hale Koa garage is across the street. It is cheaper.

Let me look for an old post from dusty and I will give you the link.

Least expensive place to park car for long periods

    www.waikiki.us/waikikimap.html鈥?/a>

Optional parking at Hale Koa garage or open lot for $12 a day if you are staying close to that hotel. It is in Ft. DeRussy area. Resortquest Waikiki Banyan has parking for $10 a day if you are staying on the Diamond Head end of Waikiki.

This info. is from one of Dusty%26#39;s posts.

I recommend calling or emailing the Hale Koa.

    www.halekoa.com

They are great about answering emails.

I also found a map from Dusty that has garages and prices on it. I will send you the link when I find it again.

    waikikiimprovement.com/UPLOADS/Parking_Map.p鈥?/a>

Does free parking sound good to you ???????

If it does then you can park at the ala wai boat harbour for up to 24hrs without getting a parking ticket and its a 5 min walk to the HHV, just follow the walking path around the lagoon.

If your not going to move your car within 24hrs then your best bet would be the hale koa garage

The Hale Koa/Ft. Derussy garages are $105 for unlimited monthly parking for general public. The attendant at the Fort Derussy lot wasn%26#39;t too helpful and but the very nice lady at the Hale Koa lot explained that if the Fort Derussy lot isn%26#39;t full the monthly pass is good there too. $10 refundable deposit for the pass. Open 24 hrs.

We are here for 10 days so its a better deal than $12/day.

If you really don%26#39;t need your car that much, consider renting only for the days you need it. Plenty of places on Waikiki to rent a car, and they probably have car rental services at the HHV.

just a note .... overnight parking for local people wanting to stay in Waikiki hotels has come done in price. I would suggest that you call or check again for updated parking prices. What is good for Kamaiana%26#39;s should be good for the tourist. We don%26#39;t discriminate against anyone!

    Good luck .....

  • embassy suites

anyone stayed at embassy suites? i am booked at the outrigger, but the suites seem to be a better deal even tho the suites are a block from the beach..any advice anyone..embassy suites or outrigger? also ahs anyone booked a room from hotwire?

    embassy suites

They are both right next to where the Trump tower is currently under construction. There have been complained about day-time construction project noise.

    embassy suites

I am currently staying at the embassy suites. we had lunch at the outrigger. it is directly across the street. if you are looking for an ocean view you can get it at embassy as well. it is not far from the water at all. i like embassy because of the free daily breakfast and free alcohol happy hour! There was also a free concert here today with a big local band. parking is expensive $25 if you are renting a car. location is great! very near beach and shopping row. i cant speak for the outrigger rooms but the lobby was pretty nice and it is right on the beach

    Which Outrigger?

The Embassy Suites are very nice ... spacious. Comfortable. Brand new. Free (full) breakfast. about 1/2 block from beach. I have been in the one on the Beach Walk and have stayed in plenty across the country.

Outrigger Reef is the one that%26#39;s across from the new Embassy Suites.

the outrigger waikiki is the one i am booked with....so ewither the outrigger or the embassy..the embassy is the same price but you get way more, but then again...it sure is nice to stay on the beach!!!

Outrigger on the Beach at Waikiki is an older facility. Lots on posts about internal and external noise. Once you get a look at it, you understand why. Great location on the beach.

Em Suites -- again, large double rooms with dining room table and lots of amenities, large bath.

While the Embassy Suites Waikiki is a relatively new operation, and represents a comprehensive retrofitting and upgrading, the actual structures are not new and are of the same age, vintage and construction types as the Outrigger Waikiki.

The ES today is the renovated amd combined Outrigger Waikiki Village and Outrigger Waikiki Tower high-rises, which were along with the Outrigger Waikiki designed by the same architect (Roy Kelley), use the same construction techniques, and are circa the same basic age.

As such, they share similar levels of internal noise and limited elevator capacity (two of the more common complaints). The only real difference is that at the ES they combined two guest room bays into a single one-bedroom suite which enabled them to enlarge the bathrooms and provide a separate living area. And, of course it%26#39;s finish is ';fresher'; than the guest room areas of the Outrigger Waikiki.

The units are not as spacious as the typical ES rooms on the mainland, but certainly a step-up from the size of those at the Outrigger Waikiki.

Big plus to the ES is the wonderful Yard House beer pub on the ground floor.

    thanks for the info!!!!!

Hi Kiwi - we stayed at the embassy suites in March. It was a great place for families and groups but had I been traveling as a couple,no kids, I would have picked the outrigger. ES was just a little too busy and loud at the breakfast and the family happy hour.

thanks for the info...the outrigger is the same price as embassy suites, but the es gives you so much more
