Kauai bus

I suppose most of the guests would rent a car. (We are exception). On our way to condo, we drop in Kukui Grove shopping center to buy some food. During our stay in Poipu, we will go to Koloa town.

We mean to use taxi but I wonder if taking Kauai bus (one way) might be economical. I found time table of Koloa-Lihue mainline and Koloa shuttle revised in May.

';Poipu RD/ Hoowili RD'; bus stop seems to be close to the condo but I could not locate where it is. Is there anybody tried Kauai bus?

Kauai bus

you will waste most of your vacation and lots of $$$ not renting a car....Kauai is very rural....many areas you cant get to without a car or taxi

Kauai bus

I would not recommend NOT renitng a car. There are so many wonderful areas that you cannot reach by the bus. I%26#39;ve never used the bus and I%26#39;ve heard it%26#39;s not that great.

But to answer your question, the intersection of Poipu Road and Hoowili Road is the road that heads down to Brennecke%26#39;s Beach. The Waiohai Marriott Beach Club, Kiahuna Plantation Condos and Poipu Kai are fairly close. Check out maps.google.com and search for Hoowili Road, Koloa, Kauai.

But I still think you should rent a car.....

I remember your questions from a few months ago and the fact you are not renting a car. I was in Poipu yesterday and I did see the bus. It doesn%26#39;t run very often but you can take it and many people do take the bus to get to work in the resort areas. A friend of mine lives on the North Shore, takes the bus to her job at the community college early in the morning and enjoys it. Transportation is just not the same as in Japan. You will see that when you are here. I know you are looking for alternatives from renting a car so it can be done but you will spend a lot of wasted time waiting for buses.

Good luck and have a great time.

Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

I live in the Po%26#39;ipu area - I also remember your questions from a few months ago.

I would not recommend using our local bus service for your transportation -- you will waste much time if you are depending on it. You also cannot take large parcels on the bus.

Ho%26#39;owili Road is the intersection of Po%26#39;ipu Road (the main road here in the Po%26#39;ipu Beach area) and the road that takes you directly down to Po%26#39;ipu Beach Park (Ho%26#39;owili Road). I honestly did not even know there was a bus stop there.

We are a small island with very limited public transportation - you will find using the bus very time-consuming and confusing in my opinion.

I wish you luck!

Malama Pono,

Janet

Thank you for all the quick replies.

Hawaidan,

I hate to spend much money, so how I wish I could drive a car. As train station and bus stop is 5 minutes from home, we do not own a car.

Martik

As you say, it would be difficult to reach most of wonderful place without renting a car. We visited Kauai 8 years ago and my husband wished to come to Kauai once again. We mean to walk from Nalo road to Poipu shopping center. I hope I am able to find bus stop.

Jebett

It%26#39;s interesting to know that your friend uses Kauai bus to go to community college. Yes, I just want to try alternative way for using taxi, but if it seems time consuming, I will take taxi.

Koloagirl

Thank you for warning that Kauai bus might not stop at Poipu area. During our stay, we would like to relax by the seaside. As we love to go to the movies, I had reserved movie tour.

Marti is really right on about renting a car in order to explore the island. But, since you do not drive, that is not possible.

Now, you might check with Hilo Hatties, and see if they will pick you up to take you to their store.

Taxi service around poipu ( we recommended surf and turf to our resort guests ). They should also go into Lihue to the Kukuigrove.

I do not remember ever seeing a Kauai bus in the Koloa area, but poipu is not all that huge, and you can have some lovely walks to many restaurants, shops, beaches, etc.

Denny

Denny,

Thank you for your reply. Kind staff of condo aranged taxi that would pick us up at Kukui Grove shopping center on our arrival. Maybe we will walk a lot poipu beach.

Aloha,

I may get blasted for this, but lots of folks hitch-hike on Kauai. Even women by themselves. Don%26#39;t know if it%26#39;s legal, but I%26#39;ve seen police cars just pass up them up without stopping them, so I assume it%26#39;s accepted. When ever we%26#39;ve had the room, we give folks a ride. I%26#39;m sure others will say NOT TO, but is an alternative if you%26#39;re comfortable with it.

3Chihuahuas

Well, with Gay %26amp; Robinson shutting down its sugar operations...

At least there will be fewer cane fields to dump the hitchiker bodies in.

amberloo, I know that was meant to be morbid humor, but really, have there been many cases of bodies showing up in cane fields? Anyways, the guinea grass grows so high in the abandoned fields, it%26#39;s just the same.

About hitchhiking on Kauai. I believe it is forbidden but I sense it is tolerated by authorities. There are several categories of hitchhikers: the resident whose car broke down or who doesn%26#39;t have a vehicle or license, the hippie who on his or her way to or from the North Shore, and then the occasional tourist backpacker. I sometimes take people, but I also don%26#39;t take people who don%26#39;t look friendly. And only during daylight hours on the main highways--no sense putting oneself unecessarily at risk.

My strangest hitchhiking story is one New Year%26#39;s Eve, we were driving home to Kapaa from the fireworks in Poipu. In Puhi we see two kids by the side of the road, so we stopped. Turns out they were 7 and 12, and their ';uncles'; were off partying and didn%26#39;t want to take them home. So we took them to the Wailua Country store and they insisted on walking home from there. Kauai is still a very safe place.
