Kauai

We are going to Kauai in July via cruise ship. I would like to rent a car there and travel around for the day. Can anyone give me an itinerary of what highlights and direction we should be going to make the most of our day?

Kauai

How much time will you have? You probably have a choice between going North and seeing the great tropical beaches and lush vegetation, or South and seeing great open spaces and the fabulous Waimea Canyon. If you want to take a tour, a helicopter ride is great (Blue Hawaiian is my fave) or a Napali boat tour. I would skip the Fern Grotto and Spouting Horn. Hanalei is awesome and my perfect idea of what a tropical island setting is.

Kauai

I would take a drive up to the North Shore. The tropical setting is incredible. You can do some shopping in Hanalei then maybe go to the end of the road. You can hike back a little from there and see the Blue Room.

Have fun!

This is a very old thread but recently friends cruised and spent the day in Kauai...they said that the North Shore was the highlight of their entire trip. They said there was simply not enough time to do too much and so they felt seeing the beautiful beaches to the North and shopping in Hanalei would be best. They tried to squeeze in Poipu but said it was too much and not worth the effort.

We took an NCL cruise to the Hawaiian Islands last year and loved it. Kauai was the highlight out of all the ports of call. We had a day and a half.

We drove up to the north shore on our first day. We drove to the end of the Road Ka%26#39;a. This is a beautiful lagoon good for snorkeling because it is protected from the waves by a reef. There is also a pretty intense hike that we did a little part of, it is the beginning of the NaPali coast (breath taking!)

After a few hours there we headed south to Tunnels beach by Haena St park which is also famous for snorkeling. This beach was so beautiful, I loved our time here.

Then we headed down to darling town of Hanalei and we both had a surf lesson with the Hawaiian School of surfing, so much fun!!! Hanalei bay was so beautiful; we walked the bay at sun set and knew we were in paradise.

We returned our rental car that night and went back to the ship. The next morning we were picked up by Air Ventures Hawaii for a one hour air tour of the island. We saw the canyon, Jurassic falls, the desert like west side of the island and the incredible NaPali coast as well as several other waterfalls, beaches and valleys, all beautiful spots that we could have never seen from our car.

Air Ventures gave us an affordable opportunity to see the whole island so that we could spend that day before enjoying the beaches and relaxing. I didn%26#39;t feel rushed; they got us back to the ship in plenty of time. I felt safe in their six seater plane, it was very smooth and relaxing. I highly recommend planning in advance, we did and we were so happy with our short time on Kauai.

I recommend the plane tour with Air Ventures Hawaii for sure and I recommend Ka%26#39;a, Tunnels and Hanalei beach, all stunning places to spend your day on Kauai! Enjoy, I wish I was going back!

The name of the beach is Ke%26#39;e.

Not many cruise ships any longer and Kauai really feels the pinch.
