My husband and I will be visiting Maui and the North Shore for 2 weeks in December. We are hoping to play golf at least 7 or 8 times. Has anyone had any experience shipping their golf clubs ahead of time, rather than trying to deal with them as checked baggage?

Chocolat .... it is my recommendation that you have your clubs tag along with your travel instead of shipping them separately.
I worked with the LPGA players here for tournaments in Hawaii and have seen many open boxes, bent clubs from improper packing and so forth.
If you are planning to play many rounds, bringing your clubs, pack them well should off set the cost of airline charges. The cost should be the price of renting clubs for two rounds of golf for both island courses. The price for bringing your clubs on your flight depends on baggage charges on what airlines.
The pros bring collaspable bags with ready to wear clothing to only stuff their golf bags with dirty clothing when departing the island.
