What's the secret?

I promise not to use your advice and get hurt... I%26#39;m just curious. When there are big waves at Waimea or Pipeline, what%26#39;s the timing secret for getting in and out? The waves at Waimanalo Bay are about the right size for me. I know there must be a certain trick to being out with bigger waves. Anyone care to explain it? Do you just dive to the bottom and wait for a certain feeling? Then what?

What's the secret?

Yeah, that%26#39;s it. You dive to the bottom and wait ...!!

What's the secret?

You know, dear ... I don%26#39;t think we are the right people to ask.

at Pipeline there is a riptide channel to the north of the big break where they paddle out, waves do not break there and there is a current to pull you out. At Waimea the waves usually do not break across the entire bay so they paddle to the side. When they get the really big waves like 25 to 30 feet they get what they call a close out set that fills the entire bay. At that point it gets very dangereous, they will go under an upcoming wave but about the time they surface another one is on top of them. That is when they bring out the jetskis and helicopters to pull people out.

Not all big waves are surfable, sometimes they just have to sit it out. Sunset is a beach that handles very large waves but is also one that has routes to paddle out.

If you ever go in the winter check it out, really an incredible thing to watch. Pipeline breaks very close to the beach so it is a great viewing place, plus they will have a bunch of professional photographers. It is not marked from the road, it is the beach parking across from the school a few minutes past waimea bay.

Thanks, longboard. That%26#39;s exactly what I was looking for. Makes sense now.

One of these years, I%26#39;m going to have to make it in the winter to see it hitting hard. We usually go in October or April. Pipeline has been interesting, but nothing like what I%26#39;ve seen on youtube (surf comp). I%26#39;ve never even seen someone surf at Waimea. When I%26#39;ve been it%26#39;s been swimmably calm or nasty shore break. I know it depends on the offshore storms, but generally, are the best waves between December and February?

Thanks again.

The bigger sets can start arriving as early as mid-November. That%26#39;s when the holding pattern for the Triple Crown events usually starts.

Blender...

Be ye careful. Every so often a few visitors are washed away by a rogue wave which suddenly makes a seemingly safe viewing location untenable; or, folks don%26#39;t realize how significant the undertow is from so much water running back into the ocean that they get sucked out in ankle deep wash.

On a big day, be cognizant of where the locals are viewing from and don%26#39;t play on the fringes unconcerned.

Big waves always make the traffic worse along the North Shore, and if it is a weekend it can become near gridlock. No parking within a mile of Waimea of Ehukai, three and four deep at Sunset, and places where the road can be closed form time to time due to wave action and associated flooding.

A lot of the traffic snarl can be avoided on a high surf day if you go out from Waikiki up the Windward side of the island, instead of through Central Oahu like most everyone else, and go along the North Shore from east to west (Turtle Bay towards Haleiwa). Plus the views are awesome.

Paddling out to a break on big days takes skill, experience and a watchful eye studying the set pattern and currents before heading out; and it can be just as difficult to get back in. But the hardest part for newbies is learning to fight the urge to inhale when breaking the surface after diving under a wave or wiping out, because there may be a foot of foam you end up sucking in.

I get a bad feeling from your post. As a Hawaii travel author and Big Island resident, I have been to every island multiple times, and I am always astonished to see people venture down to the shore when mammoth waves are washing over the rocks, or allow toddlers to wander down to the shorebreak unattended, as waves thunder in.

People mistake nature for Disneyland, and pay the ultimate price. Champion surfers have died at Waimea and Pipeline, after surfing hundreds of waves there. Hundreds of local fishermen who grew up in Hawaii have been swept to their deaths.

I write this knowing you probably think you%26#39;re the exception...they all do.

richardsullivan - don%26#39;t get a bad feeling from my post. I stated that I was just curious. I don%26#39;t think I%26#39;m the exception. I can take a look at the way surfers are built and the way I%26#39;m built and realize there is a difference. I%26#39;ve been to the surf spots on the north shore multiple times and never gotten wet. I love to swim, scuba, bodysurf and boogie board... but you%26#39;ll never see me near the water at Pipeline or Sandy%26#39;s. No worries. I%26#39;m just fascinated that people can manage it, so thought I would ask what they%26#39;re doing. Thanks for your concern. I promise to be a good girl.

Kauai scenery.

Ok, maybe we can keep this thread going for just a bit longer than the last one about the Movie...Tropic Thunder.

Is the Kauai scenery THAT good in the movie, to make it worth going to? I need to feed 3 of my addictions: Hawaii, popcorn, and movies!

Anyone know what area(s) of Kauai the filming was done? Or was it scattered around?

Thanks. jebett, did you get to it?

Kauai scenery.

I ran out of time, but I did drive by the motel where some scenes were shot. Koloagirl wrote about the movie location in the tropic thunder thread. It is really beautiful scenery so if you are in the mood for popcorn and many gorgeous views of Kauai go for it. Ben Stiller probably says thank you. (he is a part time resident).

Kauai scenery.

Looks like most of the filming was way up on private land, so you will not have access to it.

We hike all over this island, and Erica thought she saw a place or two, but more than likely just the same species of lush jungle foilage.

The scenery in the movie is pretty amazing, as this island is a lush green magical place.

We had a great time, lots of laughs, and totally no message on life. Just impossible fun and humor.

Now, get out the guide books and find some hikes, or guided tours into the green of our island.

Have fun and enjoy

Denny

The scenery was great, movie was ok. I took a picture during our flight with Wings Over Kauai of an area tha was used. I am trying to get my pictures up on webshots for all to see. Hopefully by this weekend....along with my trip report on TA.

We went and saw it last week. I wouldn%26#39;t go just to view Kauai scenery. It%26#39;s pretty much all filmed outside but you aren%26#39;t going to say ';Hey, I saw that before!'; The movie was really funny though, and I%26#39;d recommend going to see it. We went to an early show, bought a popcorn, 2 sodas and paid less for our tickets then the snacks cost. :(

Highlights from our 10 day trip to the Big Island

Highlights from our ten days on the Big Island:

Lodging:

Kamuela Inn, Waimea, 2 nights

www.hawaii-inns.com/hi/wai/kin/index.html

I had been a little nervous about this one given the decidedly mixed reviews on Tripadvisor, was reassured by one of KK’s comments. In fact, our rooms in the new wing were just fine. Clean, cute even, a cut above the average Best Westerns that we have come to know and love on numerous car trips out west.

Pele’s Plantation, Chalet Kilauea Collection, Volcano, 1 night

www.volcano-hawaii.com/pele-plantation.html

It was really a challenge to find a one-night rental over Labor Day weekend. This one was expensive but it worked.

Kona Beach House/Seaside Zen Cottage, 7 nights

konabeachhouse.com/threebedtour/seasidehome.…

See previous review.

Because check-out time at the house was at 11 a.m. and our plane didn’t leave until almost 10 that night, we had to figure out how to spend our last day. We decided to make a dinner reservation at the Hualalai Grille and hang out at the Four Seasons for the afternoon. That was eye-opening.

Food:

Our best meals of this trip were at Merriman%26#39;s in Waimea, the Hualalai Grille at the Four Seasons, and a tiny Thai restaurant, the Garden Snack Café, that serendipity led us to in Hilo. Our Thai food was so good that, since we had leftovers, we ordered some pineapple fried rice, and had dinner at our cottage in Volcano. While in Kailua-Kona, we had dinners at the Big Island Grill (best dinner out during our week here—the mud pie will forever be a part of family lore), the Royal Jade Garden (perfectly adequate Chinese), Boston Basil%26#39;s (not recommended), and Teshima%26#39;s (thought the shrimp tempura was over-breaded but other items were good liked the atmosphere). Besides the Garden Snack Café, we had very good lunches at the Coffee Shack in Captain Cook, the Roadside Café in Kainaliu, and the Kohala Coffee Mill in Hawi. Enjoyed good coffee and hot chocolate at the Holuakoa Café Espresso Bar in Holualoa. Eating our Scandinavian shaved ice overlooking Kailua Bay was fun.

The farmers%26#39; market in Volcano was excellent, and the one in Keauhou was a strong runner-up.

On Thursday afternoons, the Kona Historical Society just south of Kealakekua sells Portuguese sweet bread baked in a traditional stone oven. A salesperson at the Kimura Lauhala store recommended it to us, and it was a great tip.

Best shopping:

Sig Zane in Hilo, a beautiful store, high class and high quality clothing and accessories

the Sandal Stop and its sister store next door in Kailua-Kona---Chris Kealoha was particularly helpful

the Kona coffee, purchased many, haven%26#39;t tried them all yet; bought from the Big Island Candy store, the Hula Bean store in Kailua-Kona, Blue Sky, the Holualoa Coffee farm, and the Kona Lisa (couldn%26#39;t resist) stall at the Keauhou farmers%26#39; market

Big Island Candies, especially the chocolate-dipped macadamia nut shortbread

Touring highlights:

the burros on the road through Waikoloa Village on our way from the airport to Waimea—the car rental agent had warned us, but it was still quite a surprise to encounter them in the middle of the pitch black road

the hike to Pololu Valley

the Halemaumau Crater glowing red in the night

the turtles in the lagoon at Zen Cottage

Snorkling at Kahalu’u Beach Park

the incredible variety of cultural, historical, and natural sights— Pu’uhonua o Honaunau, beautiful churches and temples, the ranch country, sugar plantation towns, the coffee farms, the volcanoes and reefs, and more

the warmth and welcome of everyone we met on the Big Island and the amazing courtesy of its drivers

Highlights from our 10 day trip to the Big Island

Great report, Bon Voyage. We are leaving tomorrow (YAAAY!!) and I am printing it out to take with me. Lots of great recommendations. Thanks for posting it!

Highlights from our 10 day trip to the Big Island

Aloha, Great report! Many will benefit from it.

I agree that the farmers%26#39; market in Volcano is wonderful and I love Sig Zane%26#39;s.

Did the ';Kona Nightingales'; sing to you (';the burros on the road through Waikoloa Village on our way from the airport to Waimea';)?

Thanks, pdxjoanne and AlohaAdeline!

And best wishes, pdxjoanne, for a great trip!

AA, I don%26#39;t remembered being serenaded by the ';Kona nightingales,'; but that may have been because I was the driver and very focused on getting to Waimea in one piece (our plane was late and it was after 11 PM).

Nice trip report.

I did a quick search on the Pololu Valley and it looks very pretty. I read that it takes abbout 20 minutes to get down to the beach. Do you remember ho wlong it took to get back up? We will be on BI with our kids next summer.

Treepalm, for us, getting back up was way easier than getting down. Took about 20 minutes.

7 days vs 10 days

my mom and I are arguing over which we should do. what do you all think? we haven%26#39;t been to Maui in 10 years and I don%26#39;t know when we%26#39;ll go back. I want to go for 10...but she%26#39;s worried about the cost.

btw, we%26#39;re staying at Ka%26#39;anapali Beach Hotel. :)

7 days vs 10 days

The biggest cost of going to Maui Is the airfare, I just returned from a 10 day 11 night trip, your two travel days don%26#39;t really count, after 7 days I wasn%26#39;t ready to leave after 10 I was. If you really want to cut costs rent a condo (FROM THE OWNER) you can cook some meals and pack your own lunch saves alot of $$$$ Just my 2 cents. Have a GR8 trip

7 days vs 10 days

I Agree, last time we only stayed for 7 nights and were trying to see what the cost would be to stay longer. We leave next week for 10 days with kids and I%26#39;m excited to enjoy a leisurely stay and the maui way...relax and do what pleases you. There is a day or two of relaxing by the pool or whatever...and still plenty of time to do all your itenerary items. Just my 2 cents. KBH is great place to stay...if we didn%26#39;t have kids I%26#39;d be in a hotel. Have a wonderful time...book 10 days..you won%26#39;t regret it. Either way, you%26#39;ll have Maui depression as soon as you start packing to head back home!

Nobody ever had too much time on Maui! I second the idea of skipping a hotel -- one room, one bathroom -- and getting a condo. You%26#39;d have SPACE, two baths, a kitchen (no actual %26#39;cooking%26#39; required), a private lanai.

If I%26#39;m awake at night I want to be able to get up, go into the LR, make a cup of hot chocolate in the kitchen and read without waking my DH.

I agree I think 10 days, yes you can eat in alot or eat on the cheap and maybe 1 nice dinner and do get a condo by owner that does save alot of money.. when are you going?

You need to make up for those 10 years. I%26#39;d go for 14 days :)

last november went for 7 days with extended family. we were pretty busy and 7 days was too short.

leaving TOMORROW for 14 days with just my DW to do nothing. We%26#39;ll let you know.

:-)

We always do 9 - 10 days and are never ready to come back. If you can swing it, you won%26#39;t regret the extra time.

we%26#39;re going sometime in very early January. Probably leaving sometime between the 1st and the 3rd.

I agree go for 10-12 days!!

I just got back from a 7 day w/ two grammas and 3 kids and DH. it feltlike it went by soo fast. I was trying to add ina few days but it got close to the end of summer, prices etc that we did a week . but next time for sure going for at least 10 days. you can save like others said eating in a few extra days. like next time our condo has bbqs and instead of eating out and rushing ot get ready etc i plan on doing a few nights just bbqing and maybe eating b%26#39;fast or lunch out on those days. we cut back by eating just dinners out and bought food for bfast and lunch --

it will all work out in the end.

Many resorts are offering 5th night free, some even the third night free. If you are not already locked into a place to stay, look for one of those deals. That way you get to stay for 10 and pay for a week.

  • Better hotel rate advice needed

I%26#39;m booked at a certain hotel for a particular package (booked this months ago and paid 2 nights deposit). I now see better rates for packages that are just as good if not better for those same dates. How should I go forward seeing about getting this better rate? I booked these myself - no travel agencies etc. Do I just call the hotel? Thought I%26#39;d turn to you guys for advice before anything else! Thx!

    Better hotel rate advice needed

Hard to say. What was the cancellation policy for your reservation? Most that we have for next month were 30 days no penalty...if you have the same just cancel then rebook.

    Better hotel rate advice needed

    My confirmation email states:

Cancellation Policy: CXL BY 3PM HST 72HRS PRIOR/CC CHRGD 2NT DEP

So I guess I can do that. Do I tell them this is what I%26#39;m doing %26amp; rebook with them right there?! I%26#39;m all for being honest %26amp; upfront, just not sure how they feel about it %26amp; certainly don%26#39;t want to mess up my current reservy! Hm .. maybe I have my husband book the new one %26amp; then cancel the old.

Why beat around the bush? Just call and say you found better rate and would like that rate.

Done! Awesome! 2 nights free and a lower rate to begin with - still includes the breakfast as in my other reservation! So glad I%26#39;ve been reading this forum as someone else posted about this promotion! Will post thx comment on that thread!

I just did the same with the Hyatt on Waikiki. They were very nice about it!

Least expensive place to park car for long periods

I%26#39;m staying at Hilton Hawaiian Village for 11 days, and wonder if there are cheaper places within walking distance to park my car than the $24 valet parking and $20 self parking offered by the hotel. Thanks!

Least expensive place to park car for long periods

The Hale Koa garage is across the street. It is cheaper.

Let me look for an old post from dusty and I will give you the link.

Least expensive place to park car for long periods

    www.waikiki.us/waikikimap.html鈥?/a>

Optional parking at Hale Koa garage or open lot for $12 a day if you are staying close to that hotel. It is in Ft. DeRussy area. Resortquest Waikiki Banyan has parking for $10 a day if you are staying on the Diamond Head end of Waikiki.

This info. is from one of Dusty%26#39;s posts.

I recommend calling or emailing the Hale Koa.

    www.halekoa.com

They are great about answering emails.

I also found a map from Dusty that has garages and prices on it. I will send you the link when I find it again.

    waikikiimprovement.com/UPLOADS/Parking_Map.p鈥?/a>

Does free parking sound good to you ???????

If it does then you can park at the ala wai boat harbour for up to 24hrs without getting a parking ticket and its a 5 min walk to the HHV, just follow the walking path around the lagoon.

If your not going to move your car within 24hrs then your best bet would be the hale koa garage

The Hale Koa/Ft. Derussy garages are $105 for unlimited monthly parking for general public. The attendant at the Fort Derussy lot wasn%26#39;t too helpful and but the very nice lady at the Hale Koa lot explained that if the Fort Derussy lot isn%26#39;t full the monthly pass is good there too. $10 refundable deposit for the pass. Open 24 hrs.

We are here for 10 days so its a better deal than $12/day.

If you really don%26#39;t need your car that much, consider renting only for the days you need it. Plenty of places on Waikiki to rent a car, and they probably have car rental services at the HHV.

just a note .... overnight parking for local people wanting to stay in Waikiki hotels has come done in price. I would suggest that you call or check again for updated parking prices. What is good for Kamaiana%26#39;s should be good for the tourist. We don%26#39;t discriminate against anyone!

    Good luck .....

  • embassy suites

anyone stayed at embassy suites? i am booked at the outrigger, but the suites seem to be a better deal even tho the suites are a block from the beach..any advice anyone..embassy suites or outrigger? also ahs anyone booked a room from hotwire?

    embassy suites

They are both right next to where the Trump tower is currently under construction. There have been complained about day-time construction project noise.

    embassy suites

I am currently staying at the embassy suites. we had lunch at the outrigger. it is directly across the street. if you are looking for an ocean view you can get it at embassy as well. it is not far from the water at all. i like embassy because of the free daily breakfast and free alcohol happy hour! There was also a free concert here today with a big local band. parking is expensive $25 if you are renting a car. location is great! very near beach and shopping row. i cant speak for the outrigger rooms but the lobby was pretty nice and it is right on the beach

    Which Outrigger?

The Embassy Suites are very nice ... spacious. Comfortable. Brand new. Free (full) breakfast. about 1/2 block from beach. I have been in the one on the Beach Walk and have stayed in plenty across the country.

Outrigger Reef is the one that%26#39;s across from the new Embassy Suites.

the outrigger waikiki is the one i am booked with....so ewither the outrigger or the embassy..the embassy is the same price but you get way more, but then again...it sure is nice to stay on the beach!!!

Outrigger on the Beach at Waikiki is an older facility. Lots on posts about internal and external noise. Once you get a look at it, you understand why. Great location on the beach.

Em Suites -- again, large double rooms with dining room table and lots of amenities, large bath.

While the Embassy Suites Waikiki is a relatively new operation, and represents a comprehensive retrofitting and upgrading, the actual structures are not new and are of the same age, vintage and construction types as the Outrigger Waikiki.

The ES today is the renovated amd combined Outrigger Waikiki Village and Outrigger Waikiki Tower high-rises, which were along with the Outrigger Waikiki designed by the same architect (Roy Kelley), use the same construction techniques, and are circa the same basic age.

As such, they share similar levels of internal noise and limited elevator capacity (two of the more common complaints). The only real difference is that at the ES they combined two guest room bays into a single one-bedroom suite which enabled them to enlarge the bathrooms and provide a separate living area. And, of course it%26#39;s finish is ';fresher'; than the guest room areas of the Outrigger Waikiki.

The units are not as spacious as the typical ES rooms on the mainland, but certainly a step-up from the size of those at the Outrigger Waikiki.

Big plus to the ES is the wonderful Yard House beer pub on the ground floor.

    thanks for the info!!!!!

Hi Kiwi - we stayed at the embassy suites in March. It was a great place for families and groups but had I been traveling as a couple,no kids, I would have picked the outrigger. ES was just a little too busy and loud at the breakfast and the family happy hour.

thanks for the info...the outrigger is the same price as embassy suites, but the es gives you so much more

Kuhio Shores - construction in May 2009?

Hello! I was looking to book a condo in Kuhio Shores, but I%26#39;ve heard there%26#39;s construction taking place there. Can anyone give me an update on it? We won%26#39;t be vacationing there until May 2009...should it be finished by then?

    Thanks!

Kuhio Shores - construction in May 2009?

I think they%26#39;re pretty much in the final stages of construction now. I would think by May 2009 it will be a distant memory.

Kuhio Shores - construction in May 2009?

I was there the other day and it looks like painting is all that%26#39;s left but I did hear they would reroof soon. You might want to PM orca on this forum as he has the updates. I would bet May will be perfectly fine.

    Enjoy your planning.

  • Poipu Weather in July

We%26#39;re going to Kiahuna Plantation for 10 days next July. What can we expect for weather? Thanks!

    Poipu Weather in July

    Sunny!

    Poipu Weather in July

Just had a July vacation just down the road from there this July. It was very warm...

    Aloha

    Mike

Thanks very much. Will it be humid? I%26#39;m not sure what to expect.

    ';Will it be humid?';

Uh, yes... It%26#39;s a tropical island. It will be about 90 (at least high 80%26#39;s) in the day time and very slowly cool into the 70%26#39;s at night. Finally, at about 3 a.m. it will get fairly cool, and almost always humid. I must say, though, that I actually felt more humidity in Florida than in Hawaii. Most folks who vacation repeatedly in Hawaii take fewer and fewer clothes with each trip. Pack light and only light weight clothing.

Supposedly the ali`i (Hawaiian royalty) spent winters in Po`ipu and summers in Princeville. Sounds right to me!

My brother in law brought his girl friend one time. It was June (similar weather to July). She brought all her makeup, curling iron and hair dryer. It was not too humid but we got the usual daily rain shower. Anyway, her makeup had to be redone everytime we went back to the house. The curling iron was a dismal failure. I wear no makeup and let my hair dry naturally. Usually pulled up during the day since it is pretty warm. I%26#39;m from Calfironia where it is pretty dry. The humity on Kauai is refreshing and great for the skin. The tradewinds keep it very comfortable throughout the day. Ceiling fans help in the house. Pack light, forget the usual stuff (like curling irons) and have a great time! We%26#39;ll be there again in June/July 2009.

We just spent 8 days in Kauai this past July. Like the other poster said...Florida%26#39;s humidity seems worse. It was mainly in the low 80s with very little rain. (Back home it was hitting 100) Only a couple of small sprinkles and one shower in Waimea Canyon and a dousing in Lihue on our last day duing church. I was very comfortable the whole time. Our friends who were staying closer to Lihue at the same time said they had lots of rain!

I find the humidity in Hawaii to be very pleasant and like a previous poster said, it makes your skin feel so nice! Now, if you want to talk humidity that is not so pleasant..try Playa Del Carmen in July! I never had hair that dried.

    July in Kauai...Perfecto!

    Thanks, everyone, for the info.

Just wanted to let you know that the best snorkeling/swimming in July will be on the northshore - surf will be up on the southern shores. :)

    get together for TA'ers 9/11-18

Having read your posts regarding your picnic, we are feeling left out!

Anybody want to get together during the 9/11-9/18 timeframe for an adult beverage? (preferably something with a little umbrella in it and served from a coconut...just kidding about that part!)

PZP has told me that she has hula lessons on Friday night, and we are going to try and catch the luau at the Hyatt on Friday, and Capt Andy%26#39;s sunset cruise on Sunday.

Any other time is great for us. We%26#39;re staying at the Pointe of Poipu.

    get together for TA'ers 9/11-18

What has been done in the past is have people meet at the torch light ceremony that friday you go to the luau. Depending on what time pzp shakes her grass skirt, she might be able to come down at 5:30 and join you all.

    get together for TA'ers 9/11-18

Friday won%26#39;t work for me; class is 6-8:00pm, and I really hate to be rushed.

IMHO, torch lighting is not the ideal time/place to get together. Drinks are expensive and conversation is difficult. If you watch the show, you can%26#39;t converse. If you converse, you can%26#39;t watch the show.

The Luau at the Grand Hyatt is held on Sunday and Thursday nights, from 6:00 to 8:30 PM.

Mrs. S. and I are going to be in the Poipu area from the 9th to the 16th. Always glad to have a drink with a friend.

Hi Shanty! Shanty, please say HI to all those nice Kauai people that you (might) meet. Alas, I won%26#39;t be there, but a big hello to the two of you, and have a great Kauai trip!

Go take a boat tour of the Napali coast for the Caddy (my dream!). And you all go ahead and party without the Caddy; that%26#39;s alright!

Sorry you feel left out. Hope you enjoy your trip and meet lots of TAers. We leave on the 8th so we won%26#39;t be able to make it.

Whoops! I forgot that the luau is Thusday...

PZP and Shanty, it looks like it%26#39;s us, so far. Let me know when and where are good for you.

So sorry, caddy, I was looking forward to getting a load of those cool pink speedos!!!!

Sorry, jbett, I missed you in my last post! I%26#39;m still kinds new at this ';blogging'; thing, and the ongoing conversations...

Anyway, by looking at the weather reports, it seems like it usually rains a little in the afternoons. Is this right?

If so, late afternoon during the week might be a good time to get together for ';Sept II event';!

I haven%26#39;t written about this lateley, are you guys still up for an cocktail this week?

It looks like Saturday night is open, or during the week on Mon, Tues or Wed. We are obviously not making alot of firm plans on this one...

We do want to get a zip-line trip in sometime, is during the week the best time?

Who has a suggestion of a place where we can have a drink and talk and won%26#39;t get rushed out of the table?

Anybody else who%26#39;d like to join us, come on!!!

The weather report will almost say it is going to rain. It probably will rain for a few minutes here and there. Nothing to be concerned about. Appreciate it! No rain, no rainbows.

    Have fun.

    Island Gourmet Marketplace, Queens Center

Does anybody know if it%26#39;s open, and how is it. Thanks

    Island Gourmet Marketplace, Queens Center

We stayed at the Hilton April14-17, Queens center is open. They%26#39;re still doing construction. Didn%26#39;t seem to betoo much to interest my wife.

Looks like a pretty good food court.

The one to the north Mauna Lai(?) Where Tommy Bahamas is looked better.

    Island Gourmet Marketplace, Queens Center

the store isn%26#39;t open yet, but the Foodland Farms at the Mauna Lani Shops is very good and has lots of high quality stuff. It%26#39;s more upscale than the Foodland in Waimea, but at the same time the prices are pretty comparable. Stopped in there Monday and they had fresh ono steaks for 6.99 a pound.

Island Gourmet Market has finally opened in September. It is a partnership between ABC Store %26amp; KTA Supermarket. It looks to me like a supersize ABC Store. It has a deli, hot food section, and a sushi bar inside. It also has a lot of Hawaiian souvenir. The wine section is pretty impressive.

It also has a nice meat selection with the much sought after grass feed beef...

    Glad the market%26#39;s finally open!

I don%26#39;t know why the grass fed beef is sought after other than health reasons. It%26#39;s tough. I went and bought the Parker Ranch New Yorks at Waikoloa Village Market, and they were very expensive (relative to other steaks) and I was not impressed.

I%26#39;m far from a beef epicure, but I don%26#39;t like chewy steak.

I do not eat meat KK but DH does and he said that the steak he bought there was like colby (sp) and from Parker Ranch; he claims it is like butter...

The marketplace came in very handy during our 7 day stay at the Fairway Villas, we did a BBQ at the condo one night and bought ribs and tri-tip there both were really good.

Grass fed beef less likely to have mad cow.

  • Shipping Golf Clubs from FL to Maui

My husband and I will be visiting Maui and the North Shore for 2 weeks in December. We are hoping to play golf at least 7 or 8 times. Has anyone had any experience shipping their golf clubs ahead of time, rather than trying to deal with them as checked baggage?

    Thank you!

Shipping Golf Clubs from FL to Maui

Chocolat .... it is my recommendation that you have your clubs tag along with your travel instead of shipping them separately.

I worked with the LPGA players here for tournaments in Hawaii and have seen many open boxes, bent clubs from improper packing and so forth.

If you are planning to play many rounds, bringing your clubs, pack them well should off set the cost of airline charges. The cost should be the price of renting clubs for two rounds of golf for both island courses. The price for bringing your clubs on your flight depends on baggage charges on what airlines.

The pros bring collaspable bags with ready to wear clothing to only stuff their golf bags with dirty clothing when departing the island.

Good luck on your planning .....

Shipping Golf Clubs from FL to Maui

Islekane -- Thanks very much for the advice...that makes perfect sense!

    Sept 3-8 trip report

    September 3-8

I am doing this without my blue book, so please pardon my misspellings.

Beaches- We specifically chose early September hoping for calm seas in the North. It wasn’t as bad as the last time we were here (Nov. 2006) but it was still fairly rough for snorkeling. We ventured in anyway at Tunnels and saw lots of fish, but the viability was poor and the current strong. We were stupid and didn’t plan where we were going to exit and wound up getting stranded on the shallow rocks along the beach towards Ke’e. We were quite irritated at ourselves for this. Be aware of your surroundings!

South Shore- Completely unsnorkelable, but we saw some awesome surfing and probably 20 turtles feeding along the coast throughout the stay. It was great.

    Food-

Kalapaki Joes was great- food and atmosphere both (we were sad when they closed the kitchen the last night we were there, so we couldn’t have a last meal there.)

Hukilau Lanai- Great food, Great service. We love this place.

Beach House- Great food, great service- husband had the wasabi encrusted fish and loved it!

Hamuras- Yum, and cheap! Make sure to try the Lilikoi Pie

Fish Express- Poke was great and decently priced

Costco Pizza- Gotta love it! But make sure you don’t go to close to closing- they ran out of food long before they ran out of people.

Waimea Brewery- We loved the Kalua Pork Nachos. We also had a feline friend here- we think they keep her around to scare the chickens away from the patio.

Kilauea Bakery- yummy Panini bit slow on the service, but nothing horrible

Wishing Well Shave Ice- Divine. Abrupt service is part of the charm

Village Bakery (I think) Kuiki Grove shopping center- the cinnamon rolls were amazing and my husband loved his malsadas. We also had a donut hole looking item made from coconut milk and sugar that was fantastic.

Farmer’s Markets- I think we hit 3 or 4 farmers markets. We love apple bananas and passion fruit and it made us wish we had a condo this time.

    Favorite spots-

Spouting Horn- we actually went twice this visit. The waves were sending the spout 20-30 ft in the air at times and both times we saw 4-6 turtles feeding just

    off the shore.

Kauai Coffee- I don%26#39;t drink coffee, but it smells great here and my husband loves it. Whoever does their merchandising is great! Super cute shirts, bags, jackets, etc.

Hotel: We got a deal on a timeshare preview (we just had to go to the presentation) and stayed at the Kalapaki Marriot. This was a nice hotel with great grounds, though a bit fancy for us. We had an oceanfront room that had a great view of the bay and the surrounding mountains. What a landscape! We like being the somewhat central location of Lihue and the beach made a great place for sitting watching the sunset and listening to the water. They are starting to renovate the hotel floor by floor, which is a good thing as it is a bit dated in the rooms.

As before, we%26#39;re already planning on coming back in another two years or so and this time we%26#39;ll be brining our family and getting a condo.

    Sept 3-8 trip report

Thanks for the report. Sounds like my kind of vacation, eating and going to beaches! :-)

    Sept 3-8 trip report

Always a pleasure to read a trip report and yours is no exception. It sounds like a great time. Thanks for sharing with those of us waiting for our turn. But you are correct. You start planning your next trip before the sand is our of your shoes.

    ';Wishing Well Shave Ice- Divine. Abrupt service is part of the charm';

This cracked me up. I know just what you mean.

Sounds like you had a great time. I was there exactly the same days. Except the morning of the 8th the weather was fabulous. It was getting a bit rough up north and the trades were blowing too.

    Remember Bali Hai is calling.

You were right across the street from us. We were at Banyan Harbor from 8/31-9/8. We too like the central location.

So glad you enjoyed your trip. We most certainly did and I need to get my thoughts together and get my trip report done.

Yes, I am smiling about Wishing Well too. Though my first trip we were frequent customers . . . and when I told them that we had been sampling shave ice over the entire island and thought theirs was the best, they did beam a bit. They were great with my kids! Man - I would love one today - the Hanalei sunset . . . with guava, etc. Yum!

Enjoyed your report - it%26#39;ll be fun to hear about the family trip! :)

    ';Hukilau Lanai- Great food, Great service. We love this place.';

Always heard great things about this place! We just got married on Friday Sept 5th and had our reception there Manda the coordinator was wonderful! We are still here till the 17th, love it!

It sounds like you all ';did it right'; and enjoyed a lot of good food! Thank you. I just got back and am also booked for October 2009.

  • Maui Prince - car rental essential?

We will be staying at the Maui Prince in October for 7 days for our honeymoon %26amp; were wondering if it is essential to hire a car to get around. We would like to eat at different restaurants rather than only using those at the hotel - is the public transport in Maui regular %26amp; reliable? Also are taxi%26#39;s a reasonably priced option?

Maui Prince - car rental essential?

You need a car at the Maui Prince

Maui Prince - car rental essential?

Most visitors to Maui rent a car for the entire stay. Taxi%26#39;s are very expensive. Bus service is slow and infrequent. You can rent a car for two days for the cost of one taxi ride from the airport to the west side of Maui. You will want a car to tour the island, too!

Concur with the previous posters, renting a car is a necessity at the Maui Prince.

There are virtually no support services (restaurants, stores, activities) located near the hotel; you will be stuck at the veritable ';end of the road';. Not bad for enjoying your honeymoon, but not good for enjoying all of what Maui offers.

The bus system on Maui is actually OK to fairly good, the best on any neighbor island, but the closest stop is at Wailea Ike Drive near the Shops at Wailea complex about three or four miles north from the Prince Hotel.

For route info and schedule see:

    鈥aui.hi.us/documents/鈥B_SchWeb_070508.PDF

The Prince has a free shuttle that will take you to the other Wailea hotels (restaurants are in hotels) and the Shops at Wailea. You *can* walk to Big Beach and ther eis a lovely beach at the hotel. But unless you plan to spend the entire honeymoon in your room, on the Prince Beach, or at the small pool there, you should get a car. Your taxi RT to the airport will amount to a large part of the weekly rental.

    Thanks for the help.

No question - A car is essential. The Prince is great, but removed from a lot of other stuff you%26#39;ll want to see. You%26#39;ll need a car to get around. On the plus side, the Prince doesn%26#39;t charge for parking and they have a lot of it.

Trotter - while you%26#39;re at the Maui Prince, take the early bird snorkel trip to Molokini on the Kai Kanani. It leaves from the beach in front of the hotel, get%26#39;s to Molokini while it%26#39;s deserted, gives you time to snorkel and have fun, and has you back at the beach to enjoy the rest of the day. We did it the morning before our return flight and it was a nice way to close out the trip.

And best of all - the crew was exceptionally friendly and the boat wasn%26#39;t jam packed w/ people. I was very impressed.

You need a car! Yes, the area is beautiful and you can get a shuttle to neighboring resorts ... but there is SO much more Maui to see. You%26#39;ll be cheating yourself without a car. Taxis and shuttles are not sensible if you really want to see the island.

In trying to save some money one sometimes skips on the car but I think it%26#39;s a big mistake no matter where you stay. There%26#39;s simply too much to see on every island.

On our first trip to Hawaii (Kaanapali) we didn%26#39;t rent a car. One day we took the %26#39;free%26#39; Hilo Hattie shuttle to the shops. We did our grocery shopping and upon wanting to take the shuttle back to our place the driver refused us entry because we didn%26#39;t buy anything from Hilo Hattie. I offered money but he refused, and also refused to wait while we ran into the store to buy something. We had to wait for over an hour for the shuttle to return, and in the mean time our ice cream had melted and milk spoiled. We bought a bug for $5 to get us entry onto the shuttle. Needless to say I am on a lifetime boycott of that POS store.

Thanks to all for your help - some handy tips given, much appreciated!

Trip Report: Aug 31-Sept 7 Maui and BI

Hello all! First - thanks so much to everyone for your wonderful advice over the past few months. It really helped me plan our trip. A little background - this trip was our (my DH and I) 4th trip to Hawaii. We%26#39;ve visited Maui twice in the past, Kauai and Oahu. So this was our first to the BI and it was SO WORTH IT! We wanted to go this year b/c our 5th anniversary was Aug 30th and we wanted to go back to Maui - where it all began - to celebrate.

    Maui - Aug 31-Sept 4th

We arrived on NWA from Milwaukee to Seattle to Maui around 6 p.m ish. There are hardly any direct trips from Mpls anymore. Plus - I heard from fellow travelers that United and Delta are thinking of severely limiting or pulling their flights out of Hawaii! A couple from Chicago ended up on United to Maui via Houston, which took WAY longer than our flight. So if you are on the northern end of Chicago - think about flying out of Milwaukee via NWA and you%26#39;ll save some airtime.

Oh - and we upgraded to first class from Seattle to Maui - it was $250 a person. (we used Miles to get our tickets) The flight was not full. First clue the Islands were going to be light with tourists.

Anyway - got a jeep rental thru Hawaii Discount Rental at Avis for pretty decent money. We stayed at Four Seasons b/c that%26#39;s where we honeymooned 5 years ago. I called the mgr prior to booking and explained our trip. He helped me book our room and gave us the garden room price, but upgraded us to partial ocean view and said he gave us his favorite room and heck yes it was AWESOME! Even better partial ocean view room than we had 5 years ago. I opted for the Bed and Breakfast package so we could stuff ourselves in the morning.

Day 1 - Second clue that tourism is down (or at least this particular week in Hawaii) we were able to secure a cabana at 10 a.m, which NEVER happens. When you spend so much for a hotel room, I find it hard to leave the darn place. So we lounged in the morning before our couples oceanside massage. (highly recommend it - so worth the $350) We drove to the Shops at Wailea and had lunch at Tommy Bahama cafe. We know the food is overrated, but we still enjoy it.

That night we went to Old Lahania Lu%26#39;au. This was our 3rd time visiting them. They really changed things up and I have to say, we didn%26#39;t enjoy ourselves this time like in year%26#39;s past. Don%26#39;t get me wrong, this is hands down the best luau on all the islands, but I felt the show was shortened. Plus, their lava flows were horrible. (the best lava flows is at the Four Seasons, it is $12, but you get what you pay for)

Day 2: More lounging before our West Maui flight on Blue Hawaiian Helicopters. Okay - I think I read reviews somewhere about this sarcastic pilot named Klaus? Yep, we got him and he%26#39;s not the special thing he thinks he is. He made us feel really dumb when asking questions. But hey, you aren%26#39;t on the %26#39;copter for him - you are there for the view!! Unfortunately, I got sick - and I even took motion sickness pill (not dramamine, can%26#39;t remember the name) Needless to say, we didn%26#39;t buy the special $20 DVD after the flight.

    That night we requested the ocean-view table at Ferraro%26#39;s. It was awesome! But...I still wasn%26#39;t feeling well from my little air show, so we had to cut it short. I still feel bad about it. Our waiter was so cool, before we left, they brought a plate with chocholates scribed ';Happy Anniversary';

Day 3: We took advantage of 4S free hour of snorkel gear use - and it is good gear too. We snorkeled right in front of the hotel on Wailea beach and it was so clear that day, unbelievable. And get this - during our whole stay - two different boat companies dropped off their snorklers RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE 4S to take advanatage of the same area we were in for free. One was Four Winds and I couldn%26#39;t see the other, but they both came at the same time-odd. But seriously - don%26#39;t pay for that, Wailea beach is a public beach (like all beaches) drive over with your snorkel gear and do it yourself.

That night we went to Feast at Le Le lu%26#39;au in Lahaina. (Did I mention we are addicted to lu%26#39;aus?) Second time at this one - and it was better than the first time. Great food, good service, you have your own table so you don%26#39;t have to be sociable. Get to Lahaina a little early so you can walk downtown.

Day 4: last day at 4S (sigh). We rented a kayak from their scuba desk for $35/hour in the morning. I tell you, navagating thru all those snorkelers was a little hair raising. Look up people when you snorkel and take stock of your location!! We got the pool-side service down pat by this day, muffins go around at 10 a.m., water spritzes and cool towels around 11:30 and watermelon slices around 12:30.

okay - this is where I ignored your advice and got into trouble. I booked our inter-island flight on Pacific Wing. The $50 fee was so tantalizing!! We arrived 1 1/2 hours before our 2 p.m flight to the desk clerk telling us their BUSIEST flight of the day was cancelled. What??!! Their next flight was at 4 p.m. umm...sorry...I am not wasting time on my vaca. So we ended up booking on Hawaiian Airlines for $125/person. Lesson learned - just book on Hawaiian, you have a little better guarentee that your flight will happen. We called it in while at the airport and learned we save a ticketing fee by doing so.

The rest of our trip is on the Big Island. I%26#39;ll post that later. Feel free to ask any questions!

Trip Report: Aug 31-Sept 7 Maui and BI

Great trip report Sybil! You started it out right by flying out of MKE vs. ORD. Nice and relaxing. You mentioned that you could tell tourism was down. Did you notice it when you were just at the resort or when you ventured out as well? Also, what changed with the Old Lahaina Luau that you disliked besides the drink?

    Happy Anniversary!

Trip Report: Aug 31-Sept 7 Maui and BI

Your trip brought back lovely memories of our stay on Maui last May, although we saved some $$ by renting a condo. Glad you loved the 4S..it looks so beautiful. We also took a helicopter flight on Blue Hawaiian, but we had a wonderful female pilot who was funny, interesting and actually solicitied questions. We took the time to write a complimentary comment about her...so hopefully everyone won%26#39;t have to put up with what you did. At the prices you pay, you should have a pilot who makes the trip special.

I noticed that tourism was down even more when we went to BI. The hotel bartender said the hotel was at 30% capacity - and the two tours we booked - we were the ONLY ones on them. It was freaky. Regarding the question on Maui - since it was my third trip I guess I was just comparing. The hotel was light, the streets weren%26#39;t packed and the airport was a ghost town. Even the line at the car rental, which is usually 20 people deep b/c car rental employees like to take their lunches when I arrive, was quick. I think going the first week in Sept has something to do with it, but it sure wasn%26#39;t like this 5 years ago for our honeymoon.

Feast at Lele or OLL cost??

Hi, does anyone know the cost of either of these? Also, I was wondering which one would be most enjoyable to my two children (12 yr. old boy %26amp; 16 year old girl). I checked out the Feast at Lele website but could not find the prices listed on their site. Thanks

Feast at Lele or OLL cost??

I was at Feast at Lele beginning of August and booked on their website in advance. That%26#39;s where you%26#39;ll see the price. With tax it was just under $115 per person.

OLL = traditional Hawaiian hula and chant. buffet

Feast = polynesian review with fire dance. Table service

Feast at Lele or OLL cost??

Adults at OLL are $92 + tax. Children (12 %26amp; under) are $62 + tax. I would look their website pictures. The Feast is an initmate sit down dinner show, where the OLL is a buffet where your kids could get up and move about. Both are good. To see the pricing on The Feast%26#39;s website you need to go into the ';make reservation'; tab.

Here%26#39;s the link for Feast at Lele reservation on their website...

    https:/…

$110 adults and $80 children (plus tax and gratuity)

And here%26#39;s the OLL reservations link...

    www.oldlahainaluau.com/verisign/buy.html

$92 adults and $62 for children.

Feast at Lele is wonderful but you really need to be an adventuresome eater to truly enjoy the experience. The show is a review of south pacific culture, dance and food. Most kids are not up for the exotic variety of food (mostly seafood).

hmmmmm...strange. The full link showed before I clicked on submit. Let%26#39;s try it again...

    https:/…

If for some reason it is not there this time, simply go the the feastatlele.com web site, click on ';enter the site'; then click on ';reservations'; at the bottom of the page.

Taking your kids to either of these is a waste of money (they won%26#39;t like the food), for kids try the Sheraton or Royal Lahina Luau for way less money. Better yet, go eat at Aloha Mixed Plate and listen to the show at OLL (same food as luau for about $10 a plate), then next nite walk along Ka%26#39;anapali beach and watch the Luaus for FREE. Spend your money on something really fun like a snorkel trip or a raft trip, your kids will like it '; mo betta';.

When we were on Maui last year with my niece and nephew (14 %26amp; 16), we took them to OLL and they loved it. The bar area made them virgin drinks to look like the Mai Tai%26#39;s, and the food was not an issue at all. If I recall, they ate some of the chicken and the pulled pork along with some (maybe?) potato salad. It is expensive but they were glad they saw it (at least once).

    my 2 cents...

We went to the OLL in July and loved it. Your kids will have fun! Before the show people walk around and watch different demonstrations on lei making and other crafts. When they get ready to uncover the pig they have all the kids come to the front so they can see and explain the whole process of cooking the pig and the history behind it. There is food they will like there, alot of it. The show is great and we plan on going back next time we are in Maui.

For kids I%26#39;d recommend the Ka%26#39;anapali Beach Sunset luau at the Sheraton.

Since you have a teen and almost teen, take them to the Old Lahaina Luau. It would be the one out of the two YOU want to go to that your children would enjoy. It is also the one that would give your children the best introduction to the Hawaiian culture.

Your kids will enjoy a luau with a fire knife dancer much more than they will one without. These luaus also have a better variety of dances from many Polynesian countries.

Feast at Lele is good, but expensive.

Drums of the Pacific has the best fire knife dancer on Maui.

Old Lahaina Luau does not have a fire knife dancer.

  • Princeville Cliffs, any input on them and 5-301??

Ok, I%26#39;m going to eat my words...now we are seriously considering booking at the Cliffs for part of our stay! Joan- your advice kept haunting me, if the kids keep busy, they%26#39;ll be happy...so true and I just kept thinking how they might go bonkers at HBV if there is no pool and not much grass to run around....even tho that view is gorgeous! Found out the Cliffs will start new construction on a new pool next week with waterfalls, Keiki pool w/squirt area, more palm trees and tropical landscape plus there is a putting green, tennis and basketball courts, small playground, horseshoes, and TONS of grass for them to run around- great for when I%26#39;m packing lunch for the beach or when DH is bbq%26#39;ing, seems like it%26#39;s a good fit for the kids.

Anyone stay there lately? any comments on this unit? Thanks!!!

Princeville Cliffs, any input on them and 5-301??

I may have missed it, but when are you traveling? Will the pool be completed for your arrival?

We have owned timeshare at the Cliff%26#39;s since 1987 and have always enjoyed staying there. The current management have done a wonderful job.

The only time we stayed in the 5 building was the year after Hurricane Iniki.

The only complaint I had about this building was the noise from the pool, and not just from the kids. Adults are just as noisy.

Other than that, it is in a very convenient location, 5301 would be a 3rd floor unit with a loft.

I don%26#39;t think you would be unhappy staying there.

I have some pictures of a loft unit from building 8305 we stayed in this year. Email me if you%26#39;d like to see.

Princeville Cliffs, any input on them and 5-301??

Glad you are listening to me. At least someone is and it%26#39;s not my kids.... :-)....

I met the Asst GM, John Mahoney the other day. He used to work at HBR. He said the construction of the pool is starting next week and sounds lovely. For now his guests can use the pool at HBR. It is a nice complex but not over the top. It would be more fun that HBV IMO. The interiors will vary. I think for the price it is a good option.

Thanks Joan and Rich! We are finally BOOKED at the Cliffs for a week! I called and they said the pool will be done in 5 months at most and we arrive end of June so it should be complete and hope to hear good reviews about all the new additions by then! The unit looks like a nice remodel with ocean and gazebo views , it%26#39;s on KVR so we%26#39;ll see. It%26#39;s definitely a better fit for our family, thanks Joan, you helped me a lot! We%26#39;re excited and what a relief to not have to search anymore!!

    Huladolz:

    My pleasure!

FYI, we%26#39;ve stayed at the Cliffs twice in the last 5 years. Our most recent trip was just a few weeks ago (8/21-31). First time, we stayed in a mountain-view timeshare on the second floor (building 4???). This last time, we rented a 3d floor loft unit in building 9 from a private owner; it had a wonderful wonderful 180 degree view of the ocean and 2 beds upstairs in the loft. We love the Cliffs as a perfect place for a family to stay. The grounds are not over the top or resort-ish; no on-site spa or restaurant, etc. But the grounds are lovely, the staff helpful and friendly when you need them, lots of flowering plants and birds everywhere (not too many early-crowing roosters, though). All the units have nice lanais and are very spacious. Both units%26#39; we%26#39;ve stayed in have been spotless and nicely appointed, comfortable beds, good kitchens, etc. Have fun -- we%26#39;d go back to the Cliffs in a heartbeat!

Thank you for your info! I%26#39;m feeling more and more excited and sure that we made a good decision in staying there with our 3 kids next summer! I can%26#39;t wait to see pix and hear reviews of the new pool area, it sounds like it%26#39;s going to be lovely. Aloha!

We have also stayed there in Mar %26#39;06 and despite the rain had a great time. We had no view to speak of (Bldg 1?) But an excellent choice for kids...2 bedr had LOTS of space and fullsize W/D (helps) 2 large baths and privacy between bedr. (upstairs loft was nice and spacious w/2 queen beds.

Nothing fancy in furnishings but with a new pool coming it should be great for families.

  • Westin Maui offer

Anyone else get this Starwood offer in the mail? 5 nights at the Westin Resort and Spa, $185 rental car credit, plus a $75 resort credit, all for $749. Has anyone done this? Do they rope you into going to a timeshare presentation? I did a little research and found even after adding airfare, its about $2000 cheaper than going thru Expedia. I%26#39;ll sit thru the sales pitch to save two grand if thats the case. ALOHA!!!!

    Westin Maui offer

We took this deal about 3 years ago and they do not make you do the timeshare preso. We decided to since they gave us another $175 in hotel credits for doing so which we used towards a snorkel trip at the Amex counter. We also upgraded to a convertible which was well worth it and they put the $185 car rental credit towards it. Two sets of in-laws received same offer and visited beginning of this year and both ended up buying timeshare at Westin Villas (we bought when we visited again last year).

I would definitely take advantage of the offer and go!! Enjoy!

    Westin Maui offer

My fiancé and I are trying to find some great deals for Maui and this sounds great! What is the promo code for this deal so I check it out

I went looking for this deal but couldn%26#39;t find it, if you have any info please post it.

We leave on the 21st of this month using this great deal. This offer is not opened to everyone. We received the offer because we are Marriott Timeshare owners, and I think they figure that if you onw one ';hotel type'; timeshare you are likely to purchase another. I have heard of others receiving this offer from friends that own Westin properties. But, i%26#39;m not sure how to get this offer otherwise. You are NOT required to take the timeshare presentation, but I%26#39;m sure they will offer you more $$$ if you do, usually $100 or so. We haven%26#39;t decided if we will take the presentation, since if we purchase another timeshare week, it will be at the Marriott. I will give a full report upon my return.

We stayed at that property last year and they were not pushy to us. We already own a timeshare thru starwood though..

Liked the property. Nice rooms - all new inside. The beach is great....the best snorkeling right in front of the hotel - really! Have a good time!

We got our offer thru the mail because we are Starwood Preferred Guest Members. We were asked if we wanted to go on the timeshare presentation but we passed. Then they waved the extra $100 resort credit at us and we took it. A friend wanted to take advantage of the offer as well. We found a link on the Starwood site but it appears that they have taken it off. My suggestion would be to sign up on the Starwood site since it is free and hope that you get the offer in the mail.

I am a Starwood Preferred Guest member and got a call from the Westin in Maui offering the same package... which we booked. I was told on the phone that there is a mandatory 90 minute timeshare on the 3rd day. However, after reading this forum, it doesn%26#39;t seem like this is true. Either way the $749 is less then half of what it is on sale and I%26#39;ll happily sit through the 90 minute presentation to save the money. I%26#39;m good at saying ';no'; at these things (I%26#39;m a lawyer) so I%26#39;m not too worried about their tactics. But I%26#39;ll be even happier if we don%26#39;t have to go.

We have been getting this offer thanks to my mil and fil who gave our name to the timeshare co. Yes, you have to sit through a presentation. I have no need to do it but I do know someone who did it and said it was very low pressure.

If you can make it through the presentation without buying something then it%26#39;s probably not a bad deal.

However, remember there are other ways to save money going to Maui without giving up your precious vacation time.

    Dang...I%26#39;m a Starwood Gold member and I have never received an offer like this. %26lt;knocking on the computer screen...Hey Starwood...if you%26#39;re reading this, send one my way!!!!%26gt;

I%26#39;m due for a trip back to the Westin. Sigh.

We did this deal a couple years ago, only the Westin was full, so we stayed at the Sheraton. They did try to get us to attend a timeshare presentation because the Westin Villas were being built, but we cancelled and never attended and no one said anything or pressured us to attend.

We are doing the same deal in August at the Marriott, through Northwest Airlines Worldperks (hubby is a platinum member). We get two or three offers a year (also received another Westin offer a few weeks ago, but passed since we were doing the Marriott offer and could ony be gone five nights since we%26#39;re leaving the kids at home).

I do know this isn%26#39;t the kind of deal you can sign up for or find on your own. You have to receive the offer, and it%26#39;s non-transferable. I%26#39;m not sure how you get on the list, but I think it might have something to do with airline mileage programs/hotel award programs since my husband travels a ton for business and we always have lot and lots of miles. We%26#39;re travelling on award seats in August, so the trip is going to be very, very inexpensive. I guess that%26#39;s the benefit of having a spouse who%26#39;s gone travelling all the time!
