How is the Lava Flowing and Color/Brightness of it today.

We will be coming to Volcano on Tuesday and we are very curious as to the lava flow, where best to view it? Is it a hot red? We hear that it is the best to view at dust on State Rt 130. We are having problems trying to figure out all the info that we are seeing, that%26#39;s why we are writing. Thanks so much in advance. Hawaii here we come. Mahalo!!

How is the Lava Flowing and Color/Brightness of it today.

If you check the topic called Lava Update (or something like that) by Lavaguyd, there%26#39;s an ongoing discussion and answers already posted. You will not see the lava flow. The entry is around the corner from the viewing area. What you see are red ';fireworks'; from explosions as it enters.

How is the Lava Flowing and Color/Brightness of it today.

best to view from a aircraft next best form the county viewing area 1.5 mle each walk each way.

Bring water and headlamp....wear boots.

It is 2200 degrees its a bright Red orange day or night. Gas becomes incandesant at night..its volcanic ash called terpa..... its not dust.

I think Cards meant ';dusk,'; not dust.

Lava Update just posted! When you read ';Sept 20th'; i actually meant Sept 14th.

Thats what happens when you look at the calender wrong...

Bed and breakfast close to pearl harbor? Is it worth it?

We will be travelling to kauai in December and will be staying in Honolulu for one night. Is there a bed and breakfast close to pearl harbor? We would like to see pearl harbor in the morning and then fly out to kauaii in the early afternoon. Is this possible? Is it worth it to go see pearl harbor or should I just fly to kauai right away?

Bed and breakfast close to pearl harbor? Is it worth it?

NO... the area is all industrial, and military... the nearest places will be downtown Honolulu/ a 20 min cab ride ( $35.00)

There are 2 hotels...best western and Ohana airport..

both are so bad that you cant beleive it... they charge top dollar for horrible rooms... One reviewer commented he wouldnt board hs dog there.

Yes it is worth it to see pearl Harbor...USSArizona, USS Missour USS Bowfin, Sub museum...... allow one full day...1/2 a day wont do it.... even at that you will be in a flat rush. Every american needs to visit ths place in their life.

Bed and breakfast close to pearl harbor? Is it worth it?

Thanks for the info. Is pearl harbor right by the airport? Should we stay at a hotel right by the airport, see pearl harbor starting early am and fly to kauai late in the day? Would that work?

the two hotels right by the airport are the only ones and yes right by Pearl....all correct

Not in your wildest dreams should you stay there These are not B%26amp;Bs they are B%26amp;D ( bums and drugs)

pretty seedy.... unless you are into that scene...

Its your vacation....treat yourself nice....

Yes, I would spend the whole day at Pearl harbor there is that much to see....... fly late to Kauai.

Jeanne,

Yes, Pearl Harbor is near the airport; just a couple of off-ramps away along the freeway.

Yes, there is a generally well-regarded B%26amp;B fairly near the Memorial. Rainbow Inn in Aiea. Google the name or see:

http://www.vrbo.com/28218

There are couple of smaller, for the most part unknown, ';motels'; on Pearl Harbor in addition to the three hotels near the airport. The Harbor Arms and Harbor Shores.

See:

http://home.hawaii.rr.com/harborarms/

http://www.harbor-shores.com/

I would keep my dog in any of the three ';airport'; hotels (which are located in an industrial park), except maybe the Pacific Marina, which is pretty sketchy. I would even crash myself in The Plaza or Ohana Airport.

But take my wife and family to them? Not a chance.

Thanks for the useful information. I looked up the Bed and Breakfast and it is really nice, but they need a three day minimum stay. When you have a chance, could you tell me the names of the airport hotels that would be OK to stay?

Aloha Festival Parade September 13

Aloha Festival Parade is on Saturday, Sept. 13.

This is a very colorful parade.

It is also about 2 hours long.

Kalakaua Ave will be closed for the duration of the parade. So if you are in a hotel on the beach side of Kalakaua and need to get out with your vehicle, do so before the parade or you will be stuck for a while.

Schedule of Aloha Week Festival:

Aloha Festival Parade September 13

among a few hundred people getting off work, I witnessed the crowning of this years King and Queen and the presentation of the court at Iolani Palace.

A short mist of rain fell as the ceremony was taken place. The Royal Hawaiian Band played with the Iolani Court Guard standing at attention on the steps of the only Royal Palace in our country.

Don%26#39;t forget tomorrow night in Waikiki, the block party and the Aloha Week Parade on Saturday morning. Events not to miss.

Buy an Aloha Week Ribbon - it will get you discounts and into venues sponsored by the Aloha Week Committee.

';Live Aloha';

Aloha Festival Parade September 13

One of these years, I%26#39;m going to have to schedule my trip for Aloha Fest. It looks wonderful.

Hi there!

My husband and I arrive on Oahu Tuesday the 16th. The only Aloha Week activity I could find after our arrival was the following description:

5th Annual Aloha Festivals Keiki Ho%26#39;olaule%26#39;a, 10:00 a.m. – 3 p.m. Pearlridge Center Uptown %26amp; Downtown– Pearlridge will once again celebrate the Festival with a wide variety of free activities, demonstrations, arts %26amp; crafts and continuous stage performances by Halau Hula Olana, Keiki Palaka Band, Terry Brown Ukulele Studio and much more. Free monorail ride and discounts from participating merchants are available with an Aloha Festivals Ribbon, Plus a special appearance by the 2008 Aloha Festivals Royal Court. For more information, visit www.pearlridgeonline.com.

Can anyone give me more info? I know that ';keiki'; refers to children, but what is the activity? Why does it say ';uptown and downtown';? Clicking on the link doesn%26#39;t give me more info. Anyone been, is it worth attending? It%26#39;s in a shopping center...so I am wary, but love festivals. Authentic?

Mahalo!

hi joanelle

we also arrive the 16th yay!

i%26#39;m not sure about that certain event but in my research i found that the waikiki artfest is in kapiolani park sat sept 20th and in ala moana beach park that weekend they are having the portugese festa.

when i planned our trip this year i was hoping to be on oahu for the aloha festival parade and waikiki streetfest they we%26#39;re one weekend later last year but they changed the week.oh well we will still have a great time how could you not in the islands.

enjoy your trip

aloha marie

Pearlridge Center is a fairly large shopping center.

There are two sections, thus uptown %26amp; downtown. They are connected by a monorail that costs a few $$. Or you can drive around the center.

Don%26#39;t know if I%26#39;d drive from Waikiki to see the event. There is keiki hula at Ala Moana Center on Sunday mornings. Much closer to Waikiki.

pearlridgeonline.com/pearlridge2/index.php

Dusty, we are staying on the North Shore, but I get what you%26#39;re saying, and the distance looks to be about the same as from Waikiki.

Thanks Uncfest! Mmmm!!! Art and Food! I googled the festa, and scrumptious malasadas are on the agenda - sweet! I appreciate the info, maybe I%26#39;ll see you there!

Has Anyone been able to get a ';deal'; at the 4S?

So they aren%26#39;t on any of those travel sites (travelocity, expedia, etc). I went on their site to book directly and it showed they had a 6th night promotion for free but it%26#39;s sold out!! I%26#39;m so PO%26#39;d!!! I%26#39;m sure people book for February months ago but I%26#39;m just starting to plan. I%26#39;m just bummed cuz that could have been a nice savings to get one night free over 9 nights!! Am I just S.O.L and just have to deal with it? :-(

Has Anyone been able to get a ';deal'; at the 4S?

You might try calling them directly . . . as for ';deals'; on regular travel sites, nope. I don%26#39;t think you%26#39;ll ever find anyway. (We%26#39;ve stayed there twice with no such luck.)

They are generally good about upgrading for free -- always based on occupancy of course. We jumped from mtside to garden the first time and mtside to oceanview the 2nd.

But if you call, they can run through the options with you over the phone -- some of their promotions are only available certain times of the year and you might at least get a better explanation if you talk to a person.

But call the local number, not the 800. Even try asking for a supervisor directly if you%26#39;d like - that might work.

Good luck - and great choice! The 4 Seasons is soooo worth it whatever the price! :)

Has Anyone been able to get a ';deal'; at the 4S?

Aloha Twins,

I have never been able to book the Four Seasons on any of the discount travel sites; only through the individual resort site, calling directly or through a travel agent. I would beware of anyone on eBay or Craig%26#39;s List who offers discounted Four Seasons rooms as their have been some people caught red-handed in these scandals. Are you set on Maui or do you have flexibility? You may want to check the other Four Seasons (Lana%26#39;i has two) as they have similar offers (ie: 4th/5th night free, Bed %26amp; Breakfast, Spa/Golf Package, etc). Good Luck!

Thanks guys....Ya I did call them directly tonight and I asked if she could do anything for me since I was staying 9 nights...just whether they could give me the 6th night promotion that I already missed out on. But nope..she said I%26#39;d have to talk to the reservation manager. Maybe I%26#39;ll call back tomorrow and see. I just get so irritated with myself when I miss out on something I could have had due to poor planning on my part! We%26#39;ve been talking about going to Maui for months now and I%26#39;m just getting around to planning it. That one night is close to the cost of one of our plane tickets! Just bummed out. :-(

twinsinco,

try a Virtuoso travel agent. they will at least get you daily breakfast buffet (at DUO) included if you book in a partial ocean view room category and above. and they will also know of any possible promos, resort credits, etc. if available at the Four Seasons Maui.

just a happy customer here (with the Four Seasons and my travel agent%26#39;s booking). the attention to detail at this resort is astounding, and they really take care of you. even if you don%26#39;t get a terrific deal in Feb, i%26#39;m pretty sure you%26#39;ll feel that it was worth it after your trip.

Pleasant Holidays lists the 4S as one of the resorts you can book through them. If there are any promotions (like nights free or breakfast etc they will list that as well).

royal mauian

let%26#39;s here some comments from anyone that has stayed at the mauian, good and not so good!

royal mauian

I have stayed there before and really enjoyed it. Great beach access! Just a short walk. Just remember, every room is decorated differently. Make sure you know what your getting before you go. Renting privately is the way to go!

royal mauian

we have booked 212, just renovated. looks terrific, and is at the center front of building!can%26#39;t wait!

Good for you! I am sure you%26#39;ll enjoy it!

  • is it walking distance from the hilton to mauna-lani ?

How long is the walk from the Hilton to the Mauna Lani ? And is it a nice walk along a nice beach ?

We will there for July 4 next yesr, and will probably stay at the Hilton; wondering if we can walk-along-the-beach to the Mauna Lani for the ';Turtle Release';, or if we will need to drive...

is it walking distance from the hilton to mauna-lani ?

It is only about two miles from the Hilton Waikoloa to Mauna Lani Bay Hotel.

No it is not a nice walk along the beach. In fact, there are basically no beaches between the two except at Honokaope Bay, about mid-way.

The direct foot access is via an ancient trail system about 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile inland (through some petroglyph fields). Otherwise you would have to pick your way through developments and golf courses if you wanted to stay close to the shore; although there are some ';trail'; sections along the shoreline.

It is all rock in the area (relatively young lava feilds) except for the smallish strands of sand at the base of each bay. It will be hot, dry and either fairly humid or quite windy.

    Take water and SOLID shoes.

is it walking distance from the hilton to mauna-lani ?

I have done this walk and I agree with Amberloo. Not a nice walk . Lots of jagged rock. I usually bike between the Hilton to the Mauna Lani instead using the Highway.

No, don%26#39;t do this, especially for a first visit where you are not familiar with what ';trails'; on lava look like and are not accustomed to Big Island summer conditions on lava fields. Just drive over to Mauna Lani. It%26#39;s 5 minutes, not huge crowds, there will be parking. Once you are at Mauna Lani, you can also walk along the shore there (nice) over to Orchid and past there to the Puako Petroglyh fields. That is a very nice walk and we do it many times during a ML stay.

Thank you for the responses - drive it is, no walking...

Has anyone heard from or know anything about our TA friend Caddy? His neck of the woods was hit quite hard over the last few days. Sure hope he is OK.
