Hawaii 3.5 mos. post ACL surgery - ???

One of our 4 boys is having ACL / Miniscus reconstruction surgery in July and we are travelling to Hawaii 3.5 months later - late October.

Our boys are avid water jocks here in Vancouver, BC with barefooting, waterskiing, etc.

New to surfing though and are eager. I know my son who is having the surgery will not be able to surf but hoping he can partake in more than just snorkeling.

Perhaps scuba diving, body surfing, etc?

Any one with this behind them that would know? Thinking of postponing from October to November to give him one more month of healing.

Hawaii 3.5 mos. post ACL surgery - ???

Postpone if you can. If no can, then no worry :)

A friend of mine had ACL surgery and three months later came back and placed 6th in a national fencing competition...brat. She just wore a brace on her leg and was good to go - it helps that she (and your son) was already athletic going into the surgery.

All low impact sports will be fine - make sure the brace is waterproof and gets rinsed off after being in the ocean (metal rivits rust). If he%26#39;s body surfing, tell him to stay out of the wave impact zone.

Hawaii 3.5 mos. post ACL surgery - ???

If you wait then he can really expereince the fun... if you don%26#39;t wait Maui might help to heal - it%26#39;s a pretty place.

not sure about his surgery though - why not ask the docter or search some online medical q %26amp; a%26#39;s

We have been through this twice...the post surgery rehab therapy is truly the key. Hawaii will be a great motivator to do all the movements and keep it up! Our boys took only a few months to heal well enough to walk easily, but still kept up the therapy for 6 months to be sure of full range of motion. Ask your doctor and therapist as to where your son is when the trip is closer. good luck!

I went to Hawaii 6 weeks after a lateral retinacular release. I could not drive my big divers%26#39; fins thru the water. I got split fins and those worked well--less resistance. Consider getting different fins. Well worth it.

Thanks everyone. I am going to move the holiday by a couple of weeks which will put him at 4 moths post-op. Yes, he has a brac already that he can wear in the water. It will tick him off not being able to try and surf but I am sure he will enjoy being there and doing other things - our boys are excited as they have never experienced a tropical beach with the waves.

My daughter had ACL reconstruction at age 18 (and the opposite knee at age 20!!) that was over Christmas break. We went on a beach vacation over spring break the following March and YIKES she was playing beach volleyball! She is 22 now and just surfed for the first time two weeks ago in Maui. She devised her own way to get up since she can%26#39;t sit back on her legs, and got up on her first try and looked like a pro. I surf and it is gentler than it may appear but I would see how he feels before pursuing it.

I went through this a couple of years ago, make sure he starts rehab AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! Start flexing your leg back and forth a little the next day if possible and start leg exercises soon after. Also, build up his leg muscles now, the stronger the muscles before the surgery, the quicker rehab will be. I would think at 4 mos. he will still need a light brace. You will want to avoid any activities that could incur a twisting motion, straight back and forth flexing, such as swimming with fins, should be alright, but if you do any hiking, make sure to wear the brace.

Well my son%26#39;s surgery was bumped ahead and he had it in June so by the time we land on Maui it will be 4.5 months post-op. Both his surgeon and his physio are extremely pleased with his rehab. My son has a dream of surfing on Maui. The surgeon says no and the physio said yes to surfing. We will have him checked out one more time before we leave.

Is bodyboarding something that would be much safer on the knee? Is bodyboarding still lots of fun?

Someone had suggested that the surf may be too high for any of our boys at that time of year anyway as they will all be beginners.

I would listen to the surgeon, as he/she is the one who knows what repair was done, and what amount of time is required for full healing.

Regarding the body surfing or boogie boarding, there would be less chance to twist the knee, but there is still quite a bit of kicking. Also, a big wave could potentially really throw him around. I would check with the surgeon regarding these activities also.

right Doc.....

look, everybody is different, every surg. is a different thing, what Bob and Mary experienced are fine... they are not you

You pay good money for an orthopedic doctor.... he will know best...

I have had both knees done....one took 6 months and the other 8 months, and I was in shape.. Both were different in extent.......

consult a MD/FACS and listen

Maui Lea at Maui Hill

Has anyone stayed at this resort lately and how did you like it.

Maui Lea at Maui Hill

We own next door at Maui Kamaole. Maui Hill is built up a steep hill -- quite a walk to either Kamaole III Beach Park (north) or Keawakapu beach (south). That wouldn%26#39;t bother me, as I would be driving to try several of the nice beaches to the south anyway.

It%26#39;s an older property, but has some very nicely refurbished units.

  • Hawaii Movie Tours

    Hello everyone

Looking to my fellow TA%26#39;s for yet again more suggestions and opinions

First, let me thank you in advance for all your help in planning our adventure to Kauai for our 25th wedding anniversary. This site has been wonderful and very helpful..

My husband is interested in taking this tour, is there much difference between the 4 X4 tour and the coastal tour? Which one would you suggest? Is it worth it?

16 days can counting, cant wait...

    Hawaii Movie Tours

    Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

A lot of people%26#39;s complaints about the Movie Tours is that you can generally just drive to almost all the locations that they show you in the van - however the 4 X 4 one does take you to some more out of the way places that you wouldn%26#39;t get to see on your own.

If you are a big movie fan and love seeing locations where movies were filmed - I think you would enjoy it - if you are not a die-hard fan though, it maybe isn%26#39;t the best thing out there. You could just buy the ';Kaua%26#39;i Movie Book'; and do your own tour!

    I%26#39;d definitely opt for the 4 X 4 tour.

    Hawaii Movie Tours

I%26#39;d rate the coastal tour as the worst value activity I%26#39;ve ever been on anywhere in the world. And we only paid $50 for 2 having bought the tickets in a silent auction. The fact that no one else was willing to bid should have told me something.

Maybe it%26#39;s improved since 2001, but my general reaction was it was four hours I%26#39;d never get back. The reviews here on TA are not all that kind in general either. they basically have 10-12 people in a fairly comfortable small bus. They drive to locations, show you a 2-3 min movie clip and you can compare scenery from 50 years ago to now. Most of the time was spent driving in the end. Lunch was a turkey sandwich.

For what they charge, IMO you%26#39;re $150 better off to buy a copy of ';Kauai through Hollywood%26#39;s eyes'; and drive yourself.

Sorry to be so brutal, and I%26#39;m sure some will disagree. save your money for a helicopter.

    Longest day of my life....

When we pulled away from the Hanalei pier and the perky guide pulled out laminated sheets containing the words to ';There is nothing like a dame';, and said, ';Anybody that doesn%26#39;t sing is off the bus!';, well I was ready to dive under the bus.

Maybe the 4x4 trip is better, but I%26#39;ll rely on someone else%26#39;s judgement. No how. No way

    Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

The 4 X 4 is a much better tour - you go to places that you cannot access yourself and it is more rough and tumble - the film clips are still there, but it isn%26#39;t quite as ';cheesy'; as the Coastal Tour.

I have spoken to many folks who thoroughly enjoyed both tours with Movie Tours - it just depends on what you enjoy - I%26#39;m a huge movie buff and I think I would enjoy it if I were visiting myself!

Don%26#39;t let folks scare you off - if it seems like something you would enjoy and you love movies and their locations - then go for it!

    Malama Pono,

    Janet

Dave and others are pretty much right on and many others have voiced the opinon that the coastal tour was a whole lot of beach, and beach, and beach.

The 4 X 4 trip might be more interesting.

Now, there are plenty of movies sites all over the island.

You can pick up a guide book, and there are a couple of them that are very helpful and easy. One is already listed, and the other we sold at brenneckes beach center, and I looked thru it.....looked fine to me...so there are a couple you can refer to.

You see movie locations all the time just driving from point A to point B, or going to a beach, or hiking, etc.

Now, the movie tours have also been fun for some, but we personally would not do that. Others have, and enjoyed them, or hated it, and wanted off the van, and some were disappointed. Ohers had a fun time, so a lot depends on the individual.

People get very wrapped up the the movie star, and moving making business.

Frankly , if you get the guides, you would not have to drive all over the island in one day.

Just make your plans to do whatever, and check the books for what is on your way, or near your planned route of the day.

Then you are in control, and everything is easy.

    Singing is optional !

    Denny

With all due respect, I never needed a Movie tour the one time I went to Maui. I can watch old movies of classic scenes. I know what I%26#39;m seeing and it is awesome I admit..even if I have to wear that pink speedo on the beach and accept a love I can%26#39;t bear (Caddy crying a bit..but getting over it!)

I wouldn%26#39;t waist you money. Just get in your car explore Kauai, that%26#39;s what Ms. Caddy %26amp; I did. We did fall in love with north Kauai....Steven didn%26#39;t buy burgers like he said.

And none of these tours will give you a glimpse of the elusive ';pink speedo';, so I say why?

    :) Caddy

Please forgive me friend...no editing here...I meant to type Kauai...and not Maui...so sorry! :(

    Hello Everyone

Thank you so much for all the information. Pretty sure that we will be crossing this off our things to do list.

    thanks again

    15 days :)

I have just made reservation of coastal tour. I did not notice this thread but as we love movies, but we hope we would enjoy the tour. (BTW movie ticket costs nearly 18 $ in our country.)

To tell the truth, I had reserved personal guide tour in ';July'; . My husband preferred to have Japanese guide for language reason. The guide answered that she would guide us but about a week ago, I receive a mail telling that she was not able to guide us. I was upset with unprofessional attitude.

I am sorry to bring up the thing not related to movie tour.

As I have expressed before, I am one of those in the minority who thoroughly enjoyed the Coastal Tour about 8 months ago. Guess I am a movie junkie who is too lazy to do my own searching for these locations. Key for my wife and I was the tour can legally take you onto the grounds of the crumbling former Coco Palms Resort. Walking around the buildings and lagoon there brought back many fond memories of our stays during the 1970%26#39;s and 1980%26#39;s and of the wonderful late Resident Manager Grace Guslander.... Seemed the older folk like us enjoyed the tour, and the more youthful participants, with little or no ties to Coco Palms, thought it was a drag. No one in their right mind would ask me to sing, even in a group! Enough said.

    Hot air balloon

    Hi

Does anyone know if you can do a hot air balloon ride in Oahu. I have done this twice in the Uk and would love to do it over Oahu.

Also has anyone taken the helicopter ride without doors - something else I fancy doing.

    Thanks

    Hot air balloon

I have never heard of or seen any hot air baloons in Hawaii!!

    Hot air balloon

Sorry there are no hot air ballon rides on Oahu, probably due to our tradewinds, but check out hawaiifun.org for helicopter and other activities.

Actually several years ago there was a company on Big Island with a hot air balloon. But they quit %26amp; the guy moved to Kailua or Kaneohe on Oahu %26amp; started a business. But that didn%26#39;t last but a few months.

  • brunch on the beach

is there a website that lists the dates for the brunch on the beach in kapiolani park?

    brunch on the beach

The calender for the brunch and other Waikiki events, put on by the Waikiki Improvement Association, can be found at:

    http://waikikiimprovement.com/eventspage.html

A great site to thoroughly check-out for any Waikiki visitor.

However, the brunches are presently on-hold awaiting new corporate sponsorship. Unfortunately, belts are being tightened during the current tourism slump and they are having a hard time maintaining funding for some of the special events.

Seems they should be doing the exact opposite...

    brunch on the beach

thanks for the fast reply, i%26#39;ll check the website for some other events.

They have not had Brunch on the Beach for a year or two.

They are looking for sponsors, but it was actually replaced by an annual event, Waikiki By Midnight.

I don%26#39;t think there will be any more Brunch on the Beach.

    ilikai hotel

well after lots of thought and research and thanks to all at ta for all of the great advice and help in planning my very first hawaii trip..i finally went with a condo at the ilikai..anyone stay there..it does look nice in the photo, looks like a great location and you can%26#39;t beat the price...anyone know of the best place to rent a car for the day? thanks t.a.

    ilikai hotel

It is a great location in my opinion. The building is ';Y'; shaped so their are a variety of views, some better than others. This building has alot of individual owners plus alot of rooms in the ';hotel pool';. Recently a developer was trying to get all the owners together to pay for upgrades but could not get enough owners to agree. The washer/dryers are community type...not in the unit. Parking is at a premium in this area.

    ilikai hotel

thanks for the info shelia..we will be staying in 1423..most were already sold out

What to do while waiting for departure?

We have booked a trip in November and unfortunately our departing flight leaves at 11:30 PM. I rather doubt we can have late checkout so assuming we check out by noon, what can we do for a full day in our traveling clothes with our luggage until we get to the airport? We will have a car to return but other than sitting in a mall, I can%26#39;t think of anything else and I%26#39;m really dreading it. Has anyone had a similar experience and figured out an easier way to spend their last dreaded day in paradise?

What to do while waiting for departure?

    Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

Since the Kalapaki Beach area is closeby the airport, you could go there and have a leisurely lunch at Duke%26#39;s Barefoot Bar - hang around the beach,

go to Anchor Cove and browse the shops - hang around the beach - oh, I said that already right? Dinner at Cafe Portofino or one of the several other restaurants within walking distance.

From the Lihu%26#39;e Marriot (where Duke%26#39;s is located) you can get a taxi to the airport about 5 minutes away.

I don%26#39;t know, from noon until around 9 or 10 at night is a looong time with no car - have you looked into keeping it a little longer in the day? That would certainly simplify matters for you.

    Malama Pono,

    Janet

What to do while waiting for departure?

What type of lodging are you staying in? If a resort/hotel you can leave you bags w/ bell services and at most use a hospitality suite to clean up before your flight. Knowing which part of the island you are staying will help w/ suggestions too as to what to do.

you could also pay for an extra night....or see if the hotel/condo owners will let you pay for half a night or something. we got a full day at the pool/beach and able to shower and eat and not be rushed....well worth it in our minds.

Book a spa treatment for that afternoon. Many of the spas give you day use of their pool/other facilities after you get a massage etc. Then have dinner and head to the airport.

Keep the car. You%26#39;ll have to pay for an extra day, but it seems to me that beats being trapped somewhere without it.

We have no malls you%26#39;d want to sit in for several hours.

Thank you all for your suggestions so far but I don%26#39;t think I was very clear in my original email. We are staying in Kappa at the Plantation Hale suites and we are keeping the car until about 9 PM when we have to return it at the airport. Being from Canada in November, we%26#39;ll have to wear long pants and shoes to return to our winter weather but I suppose we can always change in a public washroom just before heading to the airport.

Definitely make the most of your last day on Kaua%26#39;i. I know it%26#39;s depressing knowing you have to leave to go back home, but don%26#39;t let that ruin your last day. You%26#39;ll still have over 12 hours of daylight to enjoy that last day, and every minute in paradise is well worth it.

I%26#39;m beginning to think Dave820 is my lost twin. His suggestion is great. Hit the spa. Get totally destressed. Turn in the car. Check the luggage and get your boarding passes. Take a taxi down the hill to Duke%26#39;s and continute the destressing process. Take the cab back to the airport. Flop in your seat and wake up when you are on final approach.

Lots of other ways to do it, but don%26#39;t let the mechanics of leaving drive your last day. Lots of options. Make the day memorable.

We%26#39;ve left at several times late at night. Once (with the kids) we booked a cheap hotel room and used it for the day. The last time, we shopped, went to the beach, took some toiletries from the condo and rinsed off before going to the airport.

One note of concern: be sure you know what time your car rental office closes. Budget wants their rentals returned by 8:30 p.m. as they close at 9. Bring some snacks with you as very little is open at the airport late at night.

Most flights, it seems back to the Mainland and especially Canada, leave the islands in the late evening. Anywhere from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.. This is a long day.

The last 3 times this has happened, we have booked our accommodation ( To stay) for that extra night. This way when we awake that last morning there is no rushing about. You have the whole day to relax at the resort...leisurely.... dine..

Driving around with all of my luggage in the rental car does not appeal, as well.

The car rentals at LIH close between 10 p.m- 11 p.m., depending on who you rent with.

This way you can always shower in the early evening after your full last day, and be fresh for the long return home.

We have seen many a couple/ family wandering around that last day looking for a place to shower and freshen up. For us it is money well spent and piece of mind.

Either way, pack your ';Canada clothes in your carry-on and stay in your ';Hawaii'; garb til much later. you can choose to change in the Airport restroom prior to departure.

The trip home is always very tiring. Flying east is harder on the system it seems, plus the ';Trip is over'; affects the mindset. You will need to be as rested as can be. Maybe you are one of those few who can sleep on a plane. I wish.....

These are just a few suggestions to ponder, Have a great time...Kauai is spectacular!!!
