coupons for Hula Grill or Leilani's?

Anyone know of any online coupons? Are there any in the tourist books in the airport? Going for lunch first day, so trying to get organized. Thanks-

coupons for Hula Grill or Leilani's?

Unlike Cabo or Cancun-i%26#39;ve never seen coupons for either place or any restraunt in Hawaii-2 for 1 for some Luaus maybee but any specific eatery

coupons for Hula Grill or Leilani's?

I believe that Leilani%26#39;s still has a coupon for their famous Hula Pie, free with some sort of other food purchase. Leilani%26#39;s is the best!!

where would one find the free hula pie w/ purchase coupon? It%26#39;s not on their webpage

Years ago, I saw a coupon for an ice cream sandwich thing (not Hula Pie) at Leilani%26#39;s outside seating. But, honestly, both restaurants are extremely popular (for good reason!) and don%26#39;t need to entice people in with coupons. I would be very surprised if you found any special offers.

As for their advertising ... well, people wear their T-shirts everyday ... all over the world. (My DH included.) Off topic - but sometimes I think the reason so many visitors eat a Cheeseburger (in Paradise) is because of the popularity of their T-shirts. Their food is yucky!

';Their food is yucky';

Yeah but the view is great from the ocean side second floor.

I sure wouldn%26#39;t spend time searching for a coupon for either of these restaurants.

When you pick up your luggage at the airport, you%26#39;ll see tons (literally) of coupon books. Look in those. My bet is - you won%26#39;t find anything. These restaurants have a sweet location in Whaler%26#39;s Village - right on the beach. Excellent quality, variety and service. And I forget -- a very loyal clientele!

%26gt;%26gt;the reason so many visitors eat a Cheeseburger (in Paradise) is because of the popularity of their T-shirts. Their food is yucky!%26lt;%26lt;

Yup. And Jimmy Buffet%26#39;s song about the place didn%26#39;t hurt them any either!

But you%26#39;ll be hard pressed to find any discount coupons. Because of their stellar locations, (not to mention discussion forums like this), places like Leilani%26#39;s and the Hula Grill routinely have 30-60 minute wait times for a table. With that kind of demand, the management has no need to offer discounts.

Actually, we had a coupon for Leilani%26#39;s in our ResortQuest coupon book that we got upon checking in. So if by any chance you are staying at a ResortQuest property, you should get the same coupon book. I don%26#39;t recall what it was for, we didn%26#39;t end up using it as we mostly ate in our condo. It must not have been for anything that great or we would have made more of a point to use it.

Hmmmmmm...I thought the burger at Cheeseburegers was very good. However, despite the wonderful view, the seating situation is terrible.

Enjoy Hula. They have very good entertainment from 3-5 and again later on. Man I love that place.

I too have seen a coupon for the hula pie with a meal purchase but that was years ago and came from our concierge at the condo we were renting. They also gave us a coupon for free parking at Whalers Village. Have never seen other coupons for either place.

fishing maui

Any tips on shore fishing on NW Maui would be appreciated. Won%26#39;t be bringing my gear so eqpt. rental info would be of great help too. I may also go with a daytrip on a charter boat, so a solid recommendation would be great. Mahalo.

fishing maui

Want to fish in Hawaii but not pay 200.00 to go out on a deep sea charter, go to the local store, we went to Long%26#39;s Drug in Kihei payed 20.00 for a pole which we left at hotel, and hooks and weights. Hooks for ';small'; fish. ie.. 5+ lbs should be no larger than thumb fingernail, bread works great for bait, take some from whereever you eat meals, I would also buy a small net, and bring somethin to remove hooks from mouths with teeth. We ended up renting a kayak and fished 40 yds from shore tried to stay away from snorkelers. I kind of felt bad for catching the same fish people were snorkeling for. We got about 5 fish in an hour due to drifting away from good spots and staying away from snorkelers. it was a good time and didn%26#39;t cost much, we went out in the early am for best luck, calmer waters and less snorkelers. Good Luck

My DH and FIL want to go kayaking while we are in Maui. Can anyone make and good suggestions of what company to go with? I was thinking of possibly going with them and was curious how hard is it to kayak in the ocean as I have only done it bays and never in the ocean. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

    thanks

also we are staying in the lahaina area if that helps

    kayaking

Years ago I rented kayaks with my family from one of the places in Lahania. We were staying in a ground floor condo, and were able to pull them off the water right to our room. It was lots of fun and very easy.

    kayaking

I wish we could rent kayaks, but we are staying on a 4th floor condo I believe and I dont think it would work. :(

    Contact this guy...

    http://users.maui.net/~kayaking/

We went w/him several years ago (I think he takes a maximum of 5 or 6, it was just hubby and me, in our case). The water is incredible!

My reply to you is what are you looking to do and what do you want to see, snorkling or just sightseeing? try south shore kayaking tours or maui kayaks both offer great tours and great sights.

    Outrigger Waikiki or Sheraton

I%26#39;m going to be staying in Honoulu from June 28 - July 1 next year for part of my honeymooon.

My fiance and I have narrowed it down to the Outrigger Waikiki or the Sheraton. I%26#39;ve heard good things about both.

The Sheraton package is a little cheaper and we get a nicer room (at least it sounds like it). However, the beach it%26#39;s right in front of (Grey%26#39;s Beach) looks to be very narrow and not have much space. Does anyone know if this is true?

Which hotel would you recommend for a honeymoon???

    Outrigger Waikiki or Sheraton

Frankly, for a honeymoon ... neither. It%26#39;s not that they are awful ... it%26#39;s just that there are other more honeymoonish hotels. And of course budget has alot to do with it.

The Sheraton and the Outrigger are within spitting distance of each other. The Sheraton, the Royal Hawaiian, the Outrigger and the Moana are all scrunched together. I%26#39;m not saying that this is bad -- just that if you don%26#39;t like the beach in front of your hotel ... mosey down the beach. You have ALOT of beach to choose from in either direction.

The Sheraton is a tall structure with some great views. Overall, all of the Sheratons have nice rooms and comfy beds. All of the Sheratons on Waikiki are owned by the same company. I just don%26#39;t think that the hotel has much ';character.'; It would be good for a large tour group ... but not anything special. Nothing bad ... just not special. Sorry to be so vague.

The Outrigger gets negative reviews for internal and external noise. Good for families and a little more affordable that many of the hotels right on the beach.

If I had to choose between the two, I would choose the Sheraton.

    Outrigger Waikiki or Sheraton

Yes, what you see in regards to the Sheraton%26#39;s beach is true. We were put at the Sheraton for one day/night by NWest airlines because of a cancelled flight. But we had just spent time at the Outrigger and I didn%26#39;t care for the Sheraton, especially their beach. It IS very narrow and it%26#39;s rocky in the water...stubbing toes/feet.

We have always had either moderate, or a city view at the Outrigger, and always been happy. I have never noticed noise/thin walls. I read many reviews about people complaining about this. I just have never had a problem.

    Good luck. Happy Honeymoon!

Don%26#39;t worry about the width of the beach in front of any hotel in Waikiki. The beach is 2 miles long. If it is too narrow for you, all you have to do is walk a couple minutes in either direction.

Take the one that suits your budget better.

Lots of info including sites with free brochures for all islands:

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g29222-i37-k647862鈥?/a>

I am not a fan at all of the Sheraton Waikiki, It is just too big and impersonal.

The Outrigger has it%26#39;s problems too, but the location is great.

I would look at the New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel for a honeymoon over either of them though. Great location, very quiet and romantic. It is a great little hotel.

    ';The Outrigger has it%26#39;s problems too, but the location is great';

Huh? The Sheraton is virtually at the same location. They%26#39;re on either side of the Royal Hawaiian (Pink Palace). As for their stretch of beach, YES the Outrigger Waikiki has a wider stretch of Waikiki Beach than does the Sheraton.

Actually, they have distictly different locations from several perspectives.

There is the quality of beachfrontage directly in front of the hotel. Outrigger fair to good, Sheraton poor. Access to diamond head parts of the Waikiki strand is easy from the beach in front of the Outrigger, while at the Sheraton you have to walk atop seawalls there and to go ewa at Halekulani except at low tide.

The Outrigger has extensive direct Kalakaua Avenue frontage, bringing a much larger and more diverse commercial component into the facility. The Sheraton%26#39;s supporting commercial area is much weaker, as it cannot count on many non-guest shoppers passing-by as do 10s of thousands at the Outrigger.

The Outrigger is across from the Waikiki Superblock which used to be called ';ground zero'; of the district prior to 9/11; the very heart of Waikiki. It is within steps of the major shopping, dining and entertainment venues, while the Sheraton is effectively almost two blocks removed. The Outrigger Waikiki is even closer to the renovated Royal Hawaiian Center than the Sheraton (although the latter is marginally closer to the relatively new Beach Walk project).

The ';better'; location is reflected in the land values of the underlying sites along Waikiki Beach (the most valuable land in the State), which are up to 20 percent higher if coupled with Kalakaua Avenue frontage. An opportunity shared only by the Westin Moana Surfrider (which doesn%26#39;t exploit if so well) and the Outriggger Waikiki (which does).

    sheesh amberloo,

no need to get so detailed (into the specifics) ;-) yes the Outrigger has better Kalakaua Ave frontage, with all its hub bub of activity while it%26#39;s a short walk from the Sheraton. no arguments there.

i%26#39;m not professing to prefer one over the other. i haven%26#39;t stayed at either, but i%26#39;ve visited both on multiple occasions (Duke%26#39;s and Hula Grill at Outrigger Waikiki; scenic Hanohano Room at the Sheraton) and have stayed recently at both of their immediate neighbors, Moana Surfrider and Halekulani :-).

as for the OP%26#39;s question, it would be more of a coin flip for me (cheaper room with better view at Sheraton vs better beachfront and centrality of the Outrigger).

BTW, the Sheraton has a new bar/lounge called RumFire that%26#39;s worth checking out.

The sheraton is putting in a new pool area which should be really nice, also the Royal next door is putting in improvements. I am thinking this area will be highly upgraded once they are done which is supposed to be by January. I would consider it over the Outrigger for a June trip but keep an eye on progress of the construction.

I have stayed at the Outrigger and had drinks at the Sheraton..LOL

One of the best things about the Outrigger is the stone patio that sits on the beach. You can sit on a nice comfy lounge chair, out of the sand, and be served drinks ,,while only one or two steps from the beach.

I always high tailed out to the patio in the morning and got a great chair, with an awesome view of beach, and all coneveneinces right there. When I wanted to swim in ocean I just walked onto beach, otherwise had nice non sandy time on patio.

Rooms are standard, very clean, modertate in every way,, I did only have a partial ocean view, and had a great view BTW,facing Diamond Head. If you stay there do not get the side of hotel facing away from DH, as that side of hotel is beside a noisey outdoor room ventialtion system from CheeseCake Factory next door.

Next best thing about Outrigger, besides excellant location, was DUKES,, great dinners, great fun bar, awesome views,, a table by the rail for any meal is a treat.

Plus , drinks at Dukes were the cheapest of the beach bars,, ( still not cheap) .

I think the Outrigger is a better location because it is more central in Waikiki and has better beach and more beaches to access closer.

I think it is a better choice than the Sheraton because the Sheraton is too big.

I will also admit my bias. I hate the Sheraton (being a life long Halekulani person). That hotel had no business being built on the beach. If I had a spare billion dollars, I%26#39;d buy the Sheraton and implode it.

super deals ..flights and cruises to Hawaii

Well, I have been asked bu a number of you on where do you get cruise deals.....vacations to go.com is the site....discounts I have seen in the recent past have been 86%.... ( like NCL 11 day Hawaii cruise for $549 PP)

I checked the next 90 days and here are a sample of inside cabin, sailing from LA or SanDiego 14 to 15 day cruise...with 5 days touring around Hawaii, all meals and taxes, I have done this in the past and the arrival in Hawaii by sea...kicks all other froms of arrival.....and doing it for as cheap as $73.21 a day per person....

When you consider low airfares to Kona from LA are running $630... that means you get a 14-15 day cruise for only $26 a day..... thats pretty cool

Anyway.....here are what Princess, Celeb. Royal Carib. and Holland America are offering to mid december: $1025..1099..1199..1399..1499

Go check it out....this is a legit company, not a rip I have ysed them for years...never a problem.

    Car rental at HNL airport

Which companies have car rental counters at the HNL airport?

I have something booked thru Alamo, but thinking it might be easier booking something with at the airport since there are 7 of us. If I keep this reservation, should the 7 of us take the shuttle or do we wait and let the driver come back for us?

    Car rental at HNL airport

you take a shuttle on all cars.....One goes for the car the rest go for the luggage...it will save tons of time

    Which islands for amazing honeymoon?

My fiancee and I are getting married on Oahu in March 2009. He hasn%26#39;t been to Hawaii before, but I have been to Oahu many times.

After a week in Oahu leading up to our wedding, we have an additional 2 weeks for our honeymoon and would like to visit some of the outer islands.

I love a good pool, he loves a good beach. We both like nice food but don%26#39;t necessarily want to go to a five star restaurant each night.

We would like a balance between being able to relax and have some things to see and do if we choose.

    What would you recommend?

    Which islands for amazing honeymoon?

We can help more if you give us a budget. (Remember too, %26#39;hops%26#39; are running $100 pp one way.)

    Which islands for amazing honeymoon?

Sounds like Maui would be the perfect fit for what you just mentioned. :)

Sue%26#39;s right - an nightly accomodations budget would be a big help.

Also - pick up a good travel guide - Hawaii for Dummies or another book that focuses on the islands themselves (not a bunch of hotel/restaurant filler). And get a good map.

With 2 additional weeks - Maui, Kauai and/or the Big Island are good candidates. You could also spend some time on Lanai.

Let us know what you like to do -- seclusion, water sports, shopping, restaurants? natural wonders?

With the exception of Oahu and Lanai ... you will need a car on the other islands.

Take the quiz on this website:

    鈥bout.com/od/鈥sland_scores.htm

Of the 6 islands you can stay you will no doubt hear how each is the best to go to...

consider weather Oahu and Kauai can be very wet in March

Maui is the most up-scale and resort oriented.... with the best beaches

Big Island Kohala coast is wild and has the fantastic Kona Village Resort.....total the best atmosphere in Hawaii.... top class food Island has few beaches, is HUGE, and rural....totaly different from Oahu and Maui

    Read Hawaii for Dummies

    Thanks everyone.

I guess we were thinking of some type of combination of accommodation i.e. a mixture of resort stays and condo rentals...

We%26#39;re not into any particular sports, water activities or anything like that so it wouldn%26#39;t be a factor. We just want to relax, spend time by the ocean, see some natural sights...

We%26#39;re thinking of staying for 2-3 nights at 4S Manele Bay at the end of our trip but that would be a real treat i.e. we wouldn%26#39;t be spending that much for the rest of our trip!

Don%26#39;t hop around too much. Island hopping (plane) will take at least 1/2 day. The flights are short, but the whole process takes time. And it is expensive. And packing and unpacking is aggravating (I think!).

I s the Challenge at Manele worth the high green fees? Will be on the island one day in April. Have played Plantation and thought for the money they could have at least cut the greens. Have played at numerous courses and thought about this one. Although on Maui has anyopne played the links at Mana Lani. Heard a lot about this links course and wanted to try it as well ... Thanks

    Hi Bogie,

We have not golfed it, but we enjoy walking/riding the course because of the views. It%26#39;s beautiful and emmaculate. I will defer to the golfers on the technical aspects of the course and whether it%26#39;s worth the $$. Enjoy!

    golf

By resort standards the green fees are pretty much in line. The course is beautiful and fun to pay. I played 5 rounds there last year. It was obviously worth it for me, but Your Mileage May Vary.

    Aloha Bogieman,

I am not a golfer, but I can give you a couple links to earlier discussion regarding golf on Lana%26#39;i:

Bogieman, my husband was reading this post with me and he has played the courses. Here is his reply to your question:

I have played both the Challenge at Manele and the Experience at Koele. I found the best deal is to play both courses, because the 2nd course costs only $75 for the replay, as long as it%26#39;s in the same day (hopefully, that is still their policy). Being able to play both courses, which I feel is a must, makes the cost very reasonable (by Hawaii standards).

I have also played the Dunes at Maui Lani when it was fairly new and found the course to be a great challenge and value. Don%26#39;t expect ocean front views such as playing at Makena South, but overall it is a great track at a great value. Can%26#39;t wait to play it again.

    Hey Bogie,

It%26#39;s definitely worth playing at least once in your life if you can swing the greens fees. As previously mentioned, I%26#39;d recommend playing both courses on the same day. This helps swallow the fees a bit more. I actually played last January, Manele in the AM and Koele in the PM. After playing the Challenge, they gave me the replay at Koele for free! I%26#39;m not sure if they always do this. I think they sometimes charge a $75. Even then, I still would have paid it. It%26#39;s definitely worth it!

Flight anxiety and how to relieve it.

We are leaving to go to Maui next week and Im a little nervous about the 8 hour flight. I was wondering if any of you have any suggestions on how I can relieve some anxiety. Only those with SERIOUS NON SMART ELIC RESPONSE NEED TO RESPOND.

I am not usually able to sleep on planes, and I do not drink. I get a little anxious with turbulents, even small ones.

    Thanks for your help.

Flight anxiety and how to relieve it.

I am not what you could call an enthusistic flier - so I literally start a couple of days beforehand - I slowly ease my way into meditation on the goal. Warm breezes, palm frond rattling, and lowering myself into a low state of calm. It takes practice and it can be easier sometimes than others. However have managed to get it to a %26#39;place%26#39; in my head that works for me. By the tiume we leave for the airport I am already on vacation. Narrow your focus into what soothes you.

Take a book that you expect to fall into. Take a small blank notebook and fresh pen/pencil for scribbling through any little idea that pops up. Renting a personal DVD player was a great thing that made the flight much easier than watching the movie or listening to music. Small expense with big results.

Get yourself some Tension Tamer tea, or chamomile - Sleepytime, or such, they can get you hot water on the plane and you can also drink it while waiting to board. Try Rescue Remedy (tiny bottles of stress relieving liquid sold in health food section). There are tiny toothpicks, called Australian chew sticks that are infused with herbs and they also are great at taming raw nerves (here I find them at drugstore) the ones I ike are with tea tree oil. Another idea is a fresh little box of crayons and a coloring book - may sound silly but sometimes bringing out the inner child can help you change your focus and relax with play.

Flight anxiety and how to relieve it.

Well, I fly all the time and I still get pretty nervous with turbulence.

This may be silly, but it is not meant to be a catty response ...

I tell myself over and over again that planes do not crash b/c of turbulence ... it%26#39;s the equivalent of driving your car over bumps in the road. Planes sometimes encounter very severe turbulence (rarely, though!) and are still fine ... just stay in your seat with your seatbelt fastened.

The other thing I do sometimes ... and not sure if you are a church-goer but I am sure you could extrapolate this exercise into something else ... is go through the alphabet and think of a hymn that starts with each letter and then sing every verse that I know (i.e., A= Amazing Grace, etc.) I know lots of songs, so that keeps me occupied for a while!!

Books and movies are good too ... although I find it%26#39;s hard to keep my mind on a movie if the plane is bouncing around.

As far as sleep goes, you might consider getting a prescription sleep aid just for the trip. Or take a couple of benadryl ... that seems to work for me.

I never sleep on planes and I think that is a good thing because I have no trouble falling asleep at night when I get to Hawaii!

I read. I don%26#39;t like headphones so I seldom watch the movies or listen to the music, but my husband does.

If you are seriously worried about anxiety, ask your doctor for a prescription for a few mild anti-anxiety pills like lorazepam and when to take them. Since you do not drink, no problem with ';mixing'; worries.

I find a book ... a really good book that I am anxious to dive into and save it for the plane. Sometimes 2 books. Then during the flight I read ... time goes so fast. And you%26#39;re into the story.

Second on the Rescue Remedy. It%26#39;s made from flower essence (whatever that is!). You should be able to find it at any health food store. It%26#39;s gotten me through some pretty stressful times.

Of course my first line of defense (I know you said you don%26#39;t drink but I%26#39;ll mention it anyway) is a good stiff drink at the airport before getting on the plane, and then on the plane, as soon as the drink cart comes through I get the Trader Vics mai tai. LOVE those! I think only Hawaiian Airlines has them.

Only 5 more weeks till Kauai! woo hoo! I can already taste those mai tais!

first...I dont think that it wil be a non-stop flight from Kansas... so relax

I fly a lot and here are some positive ideas:

    1. forget all the drugs, potions and stuff.

    2. Have a positive up beat attitiude...think about where you are going dont obsess with the little things... or they WILL control you get a good night sleep and have a big carbo-rich meal prior to the flight.

    3. Get a Aisle seat...there is nothng to see on the flight just clouds and there are no views on arrival worth a window seat

    4. Sit on the right side of the plane...it will be cooler and more comfortable.

    5. bring a book... watch a movie...they will have a full schedule of movies and TV shows,

    6. Drink plenty of liquids and get up every 2 hours and stretch.

    7. if flying on United...pay the small extra fee for an economy plus seat ( 5-6 inches of extra leg room and better seats)

Think positive..dont obsess...dont psych your self out.....

I also have anxiety on flights; I cannot sleep or read. The only thing that helps me is my Ipod. I download TV episdoes or movies before we leave and that will hold me over; plus the airline will usually show a movie. I live in L.A., so my flight isn%26#39;t as long as yours (it%26#39;s about 5.5 hours), but that%26#39;s what helps me.

I didnt say that we flying nonstop from Kansas. We leave MCI stop in Dallas and then it is 8 hours from there.

We%26#39;ve done the long flight from Chicago to Maui several times. I was really nervous the first time, as the longest flight we%26#39;d done before was 4.5 hours. But, it really didn%26#39;t turn out to be nearly as bad as I thought it would. It could have been because I was so excited about finally visiting Hawai%26#39;i after wanted to go for so long, but I was surprised as how fast time passed. I brought several cheesy magazines that I wouldn%26#39;t normally read - along with several that I had saved up for the flight. They also showed lots of mindless entertainment, including sitcoms, and 2 movies. My best pointer is not to watch your watch! Time will DRAG if you keep checking your watch every 10 minutes.

The flight is a necessary evil, but it is well worth it. You%26#39;ll forget all about the flight as soon as you dip your toes in the sand.

    .

    Hi People,

I think that H/DAN has it altogether and may I add that it wont hurt to talk to other passengers who are on a similar mission as yourself and most

of them would have had a few doubts of their own in early days. Dont worry about a few shakes as they come with the territory as I found out on my 1st trip from Sydney to Hawaii.I did trip number 8 in

August. If the Airline you will be on are as good as Hawaiian then you will be in good hands.{5 times.]

There is a theory that goes-'; When in doubt there is no Doubt.'; Think Positive and the end result

will be positive.. All the very best for the trip and all of the others that will follow..NoelinOZ..

    Why waterfalls?

I was wondering, what is it about waterfalls in Hawaii that is so appealing to so many people? So many itineraries have them prominently featured...?

    Share your reasons please!

    Why waterfalls?

    Hi Honu,

What a great question. On our recent trip to the BI, I just had to see the obligatory waterfalls (and wasn%26#39;t disappointed, by the way.)

For me, I think it%26#39;s because we have very few waterfalls in Southern California. In Ventura County, where I live, a local state park has a small waterfall, a goal of most hikes there.

Other than the novelty of waterfalls for most people who live in big cities, perhaps it%26#39;s the ';wow'; factor. All senses are involved: hearing the crashing of the water; seeing the beauty of the surrounding area, while the water rushes over rocks, then drops; hiking to the area; smelling the flowers and foliage that grow in the surroundings area, etc.

My hubby made a comment that every waterfall we have seen on our travels pales in comparison to Niagara (which I haven%26#39;t viewed yet). Maybe he, like others, likes the power of waterfalls.

I%26#39;m looking forward to reading other ideas. Love this topic, Honu, thanks for posting it.

    Why waterfalls?

I agree with 1TravelingFamily. Many people have never seen a waterfall and I do have to say myself, they are beautiful!

The best one%26#39;s I%26#39;ve seen were on a helicopter flight in Kauai. Just amazing. And the surrounding scenery is pretty nice too.

There%26#39;s just something fascinating about the sight and sound of a waterfall - sort of like watching a campfire; mesmerizing. The power of the major falls is amazing.

I can only speak for myself, but for what it%26#39;s worth, I think it%26#39;s a water thing. Like PZP said, some people are drawn in by certain elements.

    Water falls, at least some of them, seem universal. On our first hike to Waimoku Falls, Maui, I noticed something. As the falls came into view, without thought, I said ';wow.'; The word seemed as natural as breath in that moment. I stood there, for several minutes to take it in. In the minutes I stood there, several more hikers past. EVERY hiker, without exception, gasped or exclaimed something like ';amazing.';

If you are not sure if you%26#39;re a ';water person,'; or if your love of the ocean would translate to falls, I recommend you allocate some time to give the beautiful falls of Hawaii a try.

    Hot air balloon ride

    Hi

Has anyone done this over Hawaii? I have twice in the UK and would love to in Oahu?

What about the helicopter tour in the helicopter with no doors?

    Hot air balloon ride

No balloon rides on Oahu for fairly obvious reasons - small island, big ocean, strong trade winds.

Doors off rides are available on Kauai.

    Hot air balloon ride

    ';Gee Toto I don%26#39;t think we are on Oahu anymore....';

As the other poster said, no ballons on any of the islands due to the pretty much conctant trades and the size of the islands. Lots of other places go to though.

I saw an ad for powered hang glider ride, which may come close to a balloon ride. I saw the ad in one of the fliers you can find in the baggage claim area. I personally did a biplane ride.

Updates on Construction near Bay Villas in Kapalua

We will be there in about a month and Im curious about the construction next door to the Bay Villas?

    TIA

Updates on Construction near Bay Villas in Kapalua

    Aloha shinie,

Yes, there is still construction going on next door to the Bay Villas on the South and will be into 2009 sometime. If you are staying in the Bay Villas you will be sharing the entrance and exit road with the construction trucks. The large cranes are no longer there though and that is a definite plus for the view. I would choose a unit in the North section of the Bay Villas away from the construction noise. You probably won%26#39;t notice it much at all if you are in the far North area. If you are renting thru an agency I would contact them and ask about where your condo is and if you can see or hear any of the construction. If you are staying in The Ridge Villas or the Golf Villas there is almost no impact at all from the construction. Good luck...it%26#39;s a beautiful area!

    West side beach for wedding

Any suggestions on a beach location for a morning wedding in February on the west side?

    West side beach for wedding

    where are you staying?

We%26#39;re also planning a beach wedding for Valentines day.

We%26#39;ll be staying at our Westin Villas property and were just thinking of picking a spot near the resort.

I also think mornings will be best and many less people before all the snorkeler%26#39;s come out. Not 100% sure of where but i%26#39;m 99% sure I want the basic package from A Perfect Paradise Wedding. http://www.aperfectparadisewedding.com/

I had already contacted them about the Westin and Kaanapali beach and they said they%26#39;ve arranged them there many times and meet in the resort lobby and walk out to a open spot on the beach for a ceremony.

We%26#39;ll have 17 to 19 people in our party and I%26#39;m hoping to be able to use the Westin%26#39;s BBQ area for us all to eat and cut the cake. . .not 100% sure on that yet either.

    West side beach for wedding

We are staying at Lahaina Shores Beach Resort. I am using A Paradise Dream Wedding for my coordinator/photographer. I wasn%26#39;t sure of what beach would be the best for pictures. I want somewhere that normally isn%26#39;t terribly windy in the morning. Having a BBQ is a good idea!

WE had ours at Sunset in Kapulua Bay It was just perfect. i was worried about other people, wind etc and NO problems whatsover. I used Deanna from precious maui weddings and she was wonderful and gave me great ideas. for some reason we Could NOT use the Khakili BEach at the WOKR V and any wedding on the resort property has to be through their wedding coordinator which is on their website.

but you will need a permit and your wedding coordinator should be the one best to give you ideas of less windy/ best spot locations for a west side beach.

but any beach there is perfect!! :)

    Aloha MPLS,

What do you think of using the beach directly to the North or South of the Lahaina Shores Resort? I think they are both pretty nice, I am not sure how they would be for a wedding, but maybe your coordinator could check them out and let you know. That would really make it easy for you and the backdrop of the beautiful mountains would be quite spectacular. Doesn%26#39;t Lahaina Shores have a BBQ area also?

Is there a name for the beach to the North or South of Lahaina Shores? Yes, they do have a BBQ there. I hope to get to use it.

  • Flights into Lanai -- Baggage?

I%26#39;m planning on flying from Philly into Honolulu, and then from Honolulu to Lanai. My flight gets in around 3:30PM, so I%26#39;m planning on taking a 6:10PM flight on Island Air to Lanai. Sound good so far?

Here is the big question? It is possibly to somehow check my baggage in Philly all the way thru to Lanai, or do I need to pick it up in Honolulu and then recheck it with Island Air?

    Thanks all!

    Flights into Lanai -- Baggage?

Of course it is possible....you need to find out if your mainland airline codes shares or has an agreement with Island Air to forward baggage. I would contact both carriers just to be sure and find out.

The other thing you need to check is how much your bag weighs, Island Air has some pretty strict limits on baggage weight.

    Flights into Lanai -- Baggage?

Here is a link to Island Air%26#39;s baggage rules:

    www.islandair.com/flightinfo-baggage.asp

50 pound limit on the bag (first bag free) and basicly they do not allow baggae as carry on...one personal item like a laptop case or purse but any baggage has to be checked.

    Ok, here%26#39;s the kicker...

The last 2 times we have flown DFW to HNL to LNY, American Airlines did NOT let us check the bags all the way through because the partnership with Aloha Air Group (who previous owned Island Air) terminated. I would definitely ';ask'; to have them checked all the way. But, we have not had luck from DFW the last few months. Check the tags before they put your bags on the conveyer to make sure they say ';LNY';. My husband was told that they would, but the tags said ';HNL';.

We have never had trouble with having the bags checked all the way through to Lana%26#39;i on Northwest Airlines, and they have been a parnter with Hawaiian Air for many years. So I would certainly ask and check the tag to make sure.

Also, if you want to take one carry-on per person on your flight to Honolulu, but it is too big to bring as a carry-on on Island Air, you can gate check it right at the airplane steps. Make sure you tell the gate agent that you are doing that and they will put on a special tag. I always like to keep some important clothing and some necessities under my control. They will take you bag right at the airplane steps and it will be waiting for you right there when you get off the plane on Lana%26#39;i.

Also, when you take the Wiki Wiki over to the commuter terminal in Honolulu, you will need to take the one that goes in front of the airport, outside of the security area. Do not take the one the runs upstairs within the security area. That only goes to the interisland terminal for Hawaiian Air (unless you don%26#39;t mind walking from that point).

And BTW, I think you connection times look fine.

    Stay Away from Aqua Palms

You know, I did a lot of research prior to booking our vacation on Oahu. Through other forums as well as this one, I chose the Aqua Palms as a reasonable place to stay. BIG MISTAKE!

I now know that the few people who have posted here about the great reviews being posted by people who work for Aqua or others, are correct. Having stayed there, I feel qualified to judge that now. Whatever is pushing this hotel to getting high marks (I cannot speak for any other Aqua properties because I haven%26#39;t stayed in any others - rest assured, I never will now!).

The room was TERRIBLE. We paid for (as part of our package, a Deluxe Room with a view of Diamond Head)..what a joke...yes, you could see Diamond Head - if you twist your head to look through the high rises. Deluxe? - the room had a ceiling where the sheetrock was poorly skimmed - there were air bubbles everywhere and trowel marks. I work in construction so I know a bad drywall job when I see one. Whoever was paid for that should be fired. There were holes in the ceiling where either a hanging fixture had been secured OR a TV bracket had been - we could not tell which it was. There were drywall patches that were unfinished all over sections of two of the walls. The ';spacious'; balcony that we were promised was barely wide enough to be called a balcony. The drapes had something gross streaked down one side that I was afraid to touch. The furniture looked like something from the early 70%26#39;s (Hey, we were told that this hotel had been recently totally refurbished...:-( The cabinet where you would hang your clothes had large messy gobs of glue where possibly a mirror had hung at one point. The ironing board had dark stains on it (I don%26#39;t even want to know what they were). The bathroom was finished with grout that did not match, the back wall were crooked - very crooked - so much so that at one side, the tile grout was at least 1.5'; thick to make up for the poor wall alignment - wake up, Aqua - why didn%26#39;t you fix the WALL that was causing the problem. The tub drain cover was not secured and popped off every time we took a shower. The door frame at the entry door looked like someone had chewed on it and instead of replacing the frame or patching it where possible, they just painted over it. There were two pictures under the bed - I guess they forgot to rehang those after their ';renovations';. The bed was lumpy at the bottom third. The only positive about that place - the flat screen TV and every time I asked for fresh towels they were promptly delivered. The pool is a joke - I have never seen one that small at a hotel. The continental breakfast was to be expected - I have never seen a continental breakfast that was anything more than pastries that are bad for you and a few bananas with coffee.

I took a lot of pictures of the room. I am going to post them online as well as send them to both Aqua corporate and the company that sold me the vacation package (Continental). They should have given that place a much lesser rating than it has.

I asked for a change of room but the only one that they had available was worse than what we had. I asked for a refund on the ';deluxe'; part of the cost and was told that they could not help me at all in that regard and that I had to go back to the vacation provider (that they kept calling Elite Vacations, even though I corrected them a few times because it was Continental Vacations) - if I had a complaint. I asked for a print-out at the end of the stay so that I could ensure they were not trying to charge anything against our card (which had to be presented at check-in for misc. charges) - they refused to give me a print out showing a zero balance and told me I had to get that from the package provider?? I asked to speak with the manager on duty and he told me that he was it (Sergio, if yoou read this - you need an attitude adjustment!)

On the final day, we were waiting for the taxi pick-up (Star Taxi, who will do hotel to airport for $28 if you call in advance to book it). I need to mention here that when we arrived at the airport, they had sent an alternate company to pick us up (someone they worked with) which was fine. The guy had our name, knew how many there were and all was cool. So on the last day, when the bellhop asked me who was picking us up %26amp; at what time and I told him, I didn%26#39;t think anything of it. He took longer than it should have to get our bags from the storage room where they had been since check-out. When a taxi pulled up at 2:45pm, he said ';your taxi is here...time to go. '; I hesitated and he asked me what was wrong. I told him that it was not Star Taxi. He said , never mind that..they share with this company (';The Cab';) - WELL...he is a liar. We found out after we got into the cab and were on our way that he had called this guy 20 min. before. The driver told me directly ';the guy at your hotel. He is nice guy. He calls me every day because he knows I have nice clean cab';...I was soooo infuriated. Now,yes, I know that people all work together and there are kick-backs all the time BUT..I had been specific in saying who our taxi was and now that poor company had sent a cab to the hotel for 3pm, through nasty Waikiki traffic and wasting his gas, only to find that we were already gone. I was wondering why the guy was rushing us into the cab so quickly. I should have been more ademant about checking first with the driver but at first I thought that because it was a different company that picked us from the airport that this was the same deal. What a snake that employee is..Because we spent little time in Waikiki itself and were only there to sleep, I tried to keep it in perspective and not let it ruin my trip.

Anyway, I will post a full trip report but maybe this review will save someone else from Aqua. DO NOT STAY THERE - save your money and go across the street to the Hilton Hawaiian (btw, the HHV was great, we used them a lot for Oahu advice and they were helpful to us, even knowing that we were not staying at their hotel).

    Stay Away from Aqua Palms

Sorry - I forgot to mention the other two big problems - NO water pressure. The hot water turned on full force was scarcely noticeable at times -didn%26#39;t matter if it was late at night or early morning. Nothing like having to take 5 min. to rinse the shampoo from your hair in the shower. :-(

And finally - the floor was very unlevel. There were two distinct humps in the floor running the width of the room.

We were not only unhappy guests - we spoke to 3 other couples during the week who were in the same situation.

    Never again..

    Stay Away from Aqua Palms

Sorry you had such a rotten hotel experience! I am just curious, did you try and reach the vacation group while you were there? (Continental who booked you into the hotel) No answer or no concerns? I do hope you enjoyed Hawaii otherwise!

checking I see 4 Aqua hotels in the top ten, ahead of the Royal Hawaiian, New Otani, Outrigger Reef, Kahala, Hyatt, and Hilton Hawaiian Village.

    You have been warned!!!!

Thank you for your detailed post. I prefer to get my information here on the forum section of TA, instead of the hotel reviews... because as we%26#39;re seeing here, they can be manipulated (if Aqua is ahead of the truly good hotels in the ratings system!).

I have always considered Aqau as being budget hotels even if they call themselves ';spa';, etc.

Then, I started looking at the property pictures shown on Aqua%26#39;s site, and others depicting the ';corporate'; look. I really liked what I saw and started looking into it further for my possible stay at one of their higher end propeties.

Thank goodness for the traveller photos on TA. Right away you can spot how much more budget the rooms look than the pictures they advertised as. All properties do that - show the best picture - so not an Aqau thing, but I sure do love TA%26#39;s traveller photos - saved me from many a wrong decision.

I can%26#39;t wait to see your pics.

Thank you so much for taking the time to post. I wish everyone would share their experiences - good or bad.

    Hi,there!

In response to the question about whether or not I tried to contact Continental Vacations while I was there - Yes, we did. I was told that someone would call me back. It was not resolved during the week. I am still pursuing the issue through Continental, though. I want everyone to keep in mind that I did not let the hotel stay ruin my vacation. I loved every day of it - like I said in my original post, we were never in the hotel except to sleep and hardly spent much time in Waikiki itself at all (mostly evenings and in those cases, we went to the Ala Moana Mall (a nice mall, I thought), spent time on the Beach Walk area, spent time joining in the activities at the Hilton Hawaiian Village (a GREAT place, btw!), and went to the Outrigger Bar once, listening to the music and just kicking back.

I can honestly tell you that I am not a budget-hotel type of person on vacation - we always stay at nice hotels. Budget hotel status, though, does not excuse what that hotel tried to pass off as Deluxe, though. For this trip, we were a little more restricted on costs due to carrying the whole cost for one other with us (family member) so I had wanted to be a little more conscious of it than I might have needed to be. In retrospect - I would have paid another $1000 per week without a thought about it if someone had warned me. I am hoping someone else will be saved the discomfort of a bad hotel and I can tell you that those who posted surmising that somehow Aqua is contributing to their own higher-than-average ratings are absolutely correct. (You guys are smart!!!)

I am certain there are people who had a ';nice'; stay there and they will respond disputing my report. They have every right to do that. My response would be - their stay was not the norm.

RUN from the Aqua...(I feel better already- now that I have posted!!)

Take care and feel free to ask me any questions. I will be happy to answer.

    :-)

ChloeGirlFlorida - glad you were not soured by the experience. The hotel is like #9 of 89 rating wise here on TA but as was pointed out, that can be easily skewed, posts such as your are what people need to read, honest and objective and thanks....

    Thanks for you post.

Almost booked there but after reading other reviews on other sites we decided to pay the extra and book at the Hyatt instead. It is totally worth peace of mind and comfort. I also didn%26#39;t understand their rating so high over the other hotels mentioned.

Glad you still had a great trip.

It does look like someone has been very busy writing reviews as I don%26#39;t think many of those in the top fifteen were in the top fifty a year ago.

secluded rental on beach in kauai

Searching for a secluded get-a-away on the beach in Kauai. Or would you recommend another island, like Molokai? Preferably a cottage style with walk onto beach, listen to the surf at night, wake up to a bird%26#39;s paradise.

    contact Anna @ vanhaastertca@hotmail.com

secluded rental on beach in kauai

You can certainly find what you are searching for on Kauai. Molokai has some issues right now and the locals are not very receptive to visitors.

For seclusion check out Anini Beach and Serenity Rental Company. Of course a lot this depends on the time of year you are visiting. During the winter the North Shore surf is rough. On the West side look at Waimea cottages.

    Also look at this website.

    www.summitpacificinc.com/kauai-cottages.html

Many on this forum have stayed at nice secluded cottages, but be aware that many may be illegal rentals and the county is cracking down. After Sept. they must have permits.I believe the deadline is Sept but they have until March to comply. Some will get these permits and some will not. I would only stay in a place permitted.

secluded rental on beach in kauai

    Anna,

Theplace that comes to mind when you say ';secluded rental on a beach'; is Gillin%26#39;s Beach House. I almost rented it in2001 but it was actuall TOO secluded with small children. But it might be perfect for you.

    http://www.gillinbeachhouse.com/

Also, we went to Molokai in July 2007 and loved it. We had planned on returning in 2008 but they closed The Lodge and Beach Village. There are not a lot of other choices for lodging and many of the rental homes are illegal. I know that ';halemalu'; runs a nice B %26amp; B but it is not on the beach. The island is extremely quiet with a limited amount of things to do. Check out their forum for more information.

    Marti

p.s. What jebett said in her post is very true...

'; Molokai has some issues right now and the locals are not very receptive to visitors.'; We tried to look past that on our trip in 2007 but we felt unwelcomed most of the time (except at The Lodge which is now closed).

We came across a secluded beach house on an amazingly beautiful beach while hiking out the Makewehi Cliff trail east of Shipwreck Beach. After we returned home I did some research and found a web site. We%26#39;ve never stayed there but it is the most secluded beach house I%26#39;ve seen on the island. I%26#39;m sure it would match your criteria perfectly.

    gillinbeachhouse.com

Ha! martik must type faster than me! Anyway...the place looks amazing.

%26lt;%26lt; ';secluded rental on a beach'; is Gillin%26#39;s Beach House. I almost rented it in2001 but it was actuall TOO secluded with small children. But it might be perfect for you.

    %26gt;%26gt;%26gt;

I have been inside this house. It is cute, nothing fancy, very plain. I would LOVE to stay in it but it is a BIT too secluded for me - but it is a LOVELY area! And YOU WILL hear the surf from this house, trust me!

We also checked Gilln%26#39;s Beach House out in late 2000 and it%26#39;s simple and clean. Great location. But hubby is on the island for business and he needs cell and internet access. So now we stay on Baby%26#39;s Beach. Not as secluded but we can still hear the ocean! It%26#39;s sometimes too loud!

    Look here,

    http://www.halemakaicottages.com/

Other than the Gillan cottage that others have mentioned, I%26#39;m not sure you%26#39;ll find ';a secluded get-a-way'; on a beach anywhere in Kauai. There are a lot of really nice cottages and houses, many near a beach, but not usually right on them. As jebett mentioned, as of March 2009, those rentals will need to have a non-conforming use permit in order to be rented legally. So right now we%26#39;re kind of holding off booking a place for next May/June until we see what%26#39;s going to happen with those permits.

When are you planning on going? That will be a big factor in determining what part of the island you might want to be on. I can send you a list of some secluded cottages on the north shore if you want, as long as you%26#39;re not going the same dates we are and you ';steal'; one of them away from us :)

I am not sure that Hale Makai cottages come under that restriction, they are right on the beach, pretty much to themselves, newly renovated and very nicely done. If you are going bet. May and Sept I would highly rec. them. Good Luck with your planning!

Swimming on North Shore in early November

We are staying our entire trip on the north shore during our visit in late October/Early November. We%26#39;ve been lucky on previous visits with fairly calm surf that allowed us to swim and snorkel all north shore beaches. We are bringing relatives on this visit and i%26#39;m concerned that, if surf is higher, there will be nowhere to swim/snorkel on the north shore. All of us are comfortable in the water and average swimmers. Is there any north shore beaches one would recommend for high surf conditions? Is Tunnels or Hanalei Beach Park swimmable during this time?

Swimming on North Shore in early November

About november the boats anchored in hanalei bay haul anchor and generally head down south to winter in Nawiliwili harbor until about may.

The north shore swells can be building at that time, which makes the bay untenable.

Also, the higher the surf , the more water running into the lagoons between the reefs and shore, thus more current as the water tries to escape back into the ocean.

These huge swells, when they do come, are not necessary locally generated, they come from storms far to the north. Those seas continue on until they reach a shore.

long shore currents at tunnels actually look like rapids, and are flowing very quickly and are dangerous.

That condition, which is highly visible, is lost on the tourists, as they are not aware of what they are looking at.

Large waves crashing on the the reef, and visitors walk out onto the reef at Ke%26#39;e with 25 foot seas crashing. Then they have to be rescued, and others put their lives on the line.

Hideaways is also subject to large surf, and huge seas, so please investigate the surf and ocean reports.

Now, this is to make you aware of what you ';Might'; be encountering in november.

It is winter. Usually the south shore is recommeded for ocean activities at that time of year.

So, just be sure to visually check out the conditions, and use good sense, and pay attention to the warnings should they be posted.

Read the surf reports, watch them on TV, and and hear them on the radio, and spend some time looking at the actual situation before entering the water.

    Denny

Swimming on North Shore in early November

    freeny,

The conditions do change that time of year and when I was there last week I noticed them changing already. Hanalei Bay was still calm, but Tunnels was not. When I was there last December we could still go to Hanalei Pier but anything north of there was too rough for us. Anini is another option to visit. Just keep your eyes and ears open for the surf reports and take Denny%26#39;s suggestions.

I will be there late October so we%26#39;ll probably bump into each other looking for snorkeling spots.

We are blessed on this island, to have this website -- on which the lifeguards give daily ocean reports each morning, and inform residents and visitors of hazardous conditions:

    kauaiexplorer.com/guides/…beach_safety.php

    * Swim at lifeguarded beaches – ask lifeguards for safety and swimming tips.

    * Lifeguards post warning signs – Don’t ignore them! Read them and heed them!

    * Conditions constantly change – daily and seasonal changes must be monitored closely

    * Waves come in sets – it can look calm for up to 20 minutes between dangerous sets of huge waves.

    * Hazards can exist in ANY coastal area - not just in the water. Be careful on wet sand and rocks.

    * Do not fight a rip current – if caught in a current keep calm, float, breathe, don’t panic, and wave for help. Go WITH the current and conserve energy.

    * Use the buddy system – never swim alone %26amp; know your limits.

    * When in doubt – don%26#39;t go out!

    * Learn More – Check out The Explorer%26#39;s Guide to Kauai, our Ebook travel guide with lots more safety tips, as well as maps and highlights to island towns, parks and restaurants.

When looking at surf reports, what wave height at Ke%26#39;e, Hanalei, and Tunnels should raise a red flag? Today it shows 4-8 foot surf at Ke%26#39;e and Hanalei Bay. Can you snorkel and swim inside the reef with those waves?

4-8%26#39; surf is BIG. Stay away, even on reef-protected beaches. That said, Anini was beautiful and very calm yesterday, even on the reef. We%26#39;ve certainly been able to swim at Ke`e in November, but we check out the situation carefully.

    Aloha from Princeville...

to freeny -- and all other Kaua`i visitors:

Even those who are familiar with our waters, know to ask lifeguards for up-to-the-minute conditions.

Our local radio stations do their best to give daily surf/ocean reports, but its the lifeguards who really know what%26#39;s happening minute-to-minute.

Winter surf throughout the islands of Hawai`i, can truly be deadly for those who take foolish chances.

    car seat on plane

Our fall trip to Maui will be our first plane trip with our three year old. I was wondering how well car seats work on the plane. Any problems we should know about?

I%26#39;d rather he sat in his seat rather than checking it. That way it%26#39;s familiar.

    car seat on plane

contact your airline if they will permit this...not all car seats work or are certified by the FAA.

otherwise the seat will be a carryon... and as a 3 yearold he gets 1.

    car seat on plane

Yes, check to make sure the car seat is ceetified for ';aircraft';.

As far as needing it. Two things we always thought about when deciding....

    1. will our kid listen or will he move around, getting off his seat, always getting up. I am probably sounding mean, but it is just like in a car, he is buckled into the car seat and knows he has to stay put - and he is comfortable.

    2. If renting a car, how much will the bill be for the car seat from the car company.

We finally decided last November when he was still 3 1/2 years old that we no longer were going to lug around the car seat. He has been a good boy on every flight and I tell you, not having to lug it around is AWESOME!

I would recommend doing plane side check in for the car seat-that way you don%26#39;t have to pay for it.

I flew with my 2 year old (he was almost 3) and had the same concerns. (It was a 4 hour flight)

The fact is-the airplane will be so different-a car seat won%26#39;t make a difference. Plus it really gets in the way. My son was so amazed by the entire flight experience, he literally sat and watched out the window the whole time. Except for his 1.5 hour nap.

And DO NOT rent a car seat from a car rental place. Those are filthy. I wouldn%26#39;t want to sit in one myself-much less have my son be strapped into one.

Our son was quite comfortable on the plane in his car seat at that age. He was able to see more and getting him up closer to our eye level made it easier to entertain him as well. Further, I expect he would have wiggled out of the regular seat belt in short order.

You should check with your airline regarding what types of car seats are allowed in the cabin (not all are) and whether or not it counts as a carryon piece; it varies not only by airline, but, at least in Delta%26#39;s case, also by the type of ticket your child is flying on. With rules about luggage changing so rapidly, checking with your airline is the only way to get current information.

    Hi People,

Has anybody spent some time and money at the

Admiral%26#39;s Club at Hnl A/port and what did they

like about the food and enviroment in general?.

Admiral's Club at the Honolulu Airport.

Hi Noel, We were there last October and had a late flight out to Texas. We were given fresh towels to shower which was great but the food and snacks were a bit dismal. Instant cuppa noodles and a few crackers were all that was on offer, nothing fresh. However when we returned for the night and had an early morning flight out, I paid for coffee and a muffin in the actual airport thinking there would be nothing at the Admirals Club and when we got there was pleasantly surprised to see fruit and pastries and cereal available. It was only small but clean and well maintained.

Admiral's Club at the Honolulu Airport.

Gee Noel, is is worth risking your life for a cup of noodles and a muffin?

it is not a first class lounge..its a regular airline club.... bar with drinks for sale, crackers and packaged cheese, coffee soft drinks for purchase

No food available for purchase.... has 2 showers....

Quantas has a regular First lounge lounge... restricted to Quantas First Class and American Firstclass passengers only... You cant buy membership or admission...ubn less you are on a same day paid first class flight....$ 8000 each way to OZ.

But ths is all moot...as the odds are very high you wont live long after you takeoff from Australia....Your doctor is not an idiot....obey his orders... or die in denial

  • Which Island?

    Aloha!

It has nearly started to rain here in the Pacific Northwest and I am dreaming of a February getaway to Hawaii for my husband and I.

In past years we have had some great trips to both Kauai + Maui. Stayed in Waimea + Haena in rentals on Kauai. In Makena, Hana and Kula on Maui. We love the laid back non-resort type of places and activities. Prefer cottage rentals and enjoy spending time kicking back on the beach, snorkeling, swimming, kayaking, bike riding (My husband is obsessed a la Lance), farm markets, local food etc. Have also really loved whale + turtle watching on Maui.

Since we have already had several visits to both those islands, I%26#39;d love to explore another island. Can anyone recommend a spot or 2 to check out. Would appreciate any lodging leads too.

    Mahalo :)

    Which Island?

yes...go research the island you want...hope you fing what you want...

    Which Island?

Wow, Dan. That was really helpful. Thanks.

    Aloha PDX,

I can see where Dan is coming from, ';which island'; is asked ALL the time. So some research and then more specific questions would be the best way to go. But I think we could be a little more helpful here on TA.

So one idea for a very laid back experience would be Lana%26#39;i. Population of only 3000, no stop lights or chain stores. One does not have to stay one of the two Four Seasons resorts, as there are several B%26amp;B%26#39;s as well as the Hotel Lana%26#39;i.

Check out this link to the inside page on things to do on Lana%26#39;i, and you can see if this is your kind of place:

    Have fun planning your trip!

    -DrV

Aloha! I am currently researching the Big Island for a future trip - because like you, I have been to Kauai and Maui. I love Kauai and would always love to return here, but neither my spouse nor I have been to the Big Island, so it would be fun to go adventuring here. You sound more like the outdoor adventure types, and the Big Island might fit the bill for you. I have some local friends that go there for a few months in the winter and he is an avid biker - he loves the BI simply because he can bike for great distances. I would also like to go to Molokai at some point in my life, but it would be too quiet for my spouse. Good luck with your searching. :)

You will love the BI coalminer....it has places similar to Kauai but also places totally different than any other island.

BTW, my wife was also reluctant to give Molokai a try...until we got there and she realized we had the biggest beach in all the islands to ourselves for hours and hours.

The problem...you have no budget... the islands you have visited are nothng like the other islands....Much of what you want to do is impossible to do on Lanai, Big Island, Molokai..

This research is key as the experience on the other islands will be 100% different..... It is key a person understands that you go to other islands for a totaly different experience...

The question, Where can I go on the other islands thats like Maui and Kauai.....answer Maui and Kauai.

research...Hawaii for dummies then use the left menu and search.. the reams of data. This question gets asked maybe a dozen timkes a week... check other postings...please

I didn%26#39;t see anything in your post that suggests you want something just like Maui or Kauai. You didn%26#39;t ask that question did you??

Also, all the things that you listed in your post are available to do on all the other islands.

My suggestion would be the island of Hawaii. It has, what I am told, the best snorkeling of all the islands. It is huge and you could spend days upon days of exploration.

Lanai would be great also. I love that island!!

Good luck in your decision making!!

hey there - I think this poster did share quite a bit of details. While they said they had been to Kauai and Maui, they didn%26#39;t say they were looking for more of the same. They also listed the areas they had stayed, which says alot about what types of places they are looking for . . . most folks don%26#39;t stay in Haena when visiting Kauai. They want outdoor activities and non-resort places to stay. While they didn%26#39;t list a specific budget, I think they provided enough info that we know they aren%26#39;t looking for the local Hyatt!

PDX - sorry more of your replies haven%26#39;t been as helpful or kind as they could be. I do think the Big Island would offer you the most - while I haven%26#39;t been there, it is huge, diverse and has many out of the way places to stay, at least that is what I have gathered from researching myself. My main focus is snorkeling/diving, and I know that the BI has the best water quality of any of the Hawaiian islands. Best wishes for another great vacation in Hawaii!! :)

I would have to second the recommendation for the Big Island - of course as the next best thing to Lana%26#39;i. ;-)

    Ideas for solo tourist?

Hey y%26#39;all! I will visiting Kapolei from N. Carolina for a business trip in a month or so. Only problem is I will be travelling solo. I want to stay at least 3 days to make all the travel worth it and to take advantage of this free flight. What do you recommend a 28 yr old (married) woman do in Oahu? I love hiking, anything outdoors, food, history and the sun! How many days do you think I should stay to see everything?

    Thanks!

    Ideas for solo tourist?

take advantage of all the tours offered from you hotel.... Go with a group... Honolulu is a large metro city... Not a place for a lady alone to wander in....

    Ideas for solo tourist?

Sorry Dan - I totally disagree.

Honolulu and the Island of Oahu is very very safe. I am continually posting about personal property crime, but never ever have I felt unsafe to go almost anywhere I want to go (just don%26#39;t leave stuff in the car). OK - I don%26#39;t go to chinatown alone at night nor do I go to Wainai, day or night.

I would agree that if the OP doesn%26#39;t want to be solo, tours are good. For me, I would be much happier with a map and a car. there are so many beautiful places to go.

I would do one day at Haunama Bay and the light house hike or Diamond Head.

Another day I would do Kailua and LaniKai beaches and another day North Shore. Take you time for all of them and relax. On the Kailua Day I would either do a massage at your hotel or in Kailua. I used to go here for a fair priced massage. http://www.hhacdirect.com/clinic.php

Dinners are always odd for me when travellingsolo. I will often bring something back to the room or do room service. For the most part, I am totally comfortable doing whatever solo, but dinner gets lonely - I bring a book if I go out. OH - One evening go to the Ala Moana Mall. My favorite place to eat there is Mariposa at Neiman Marcus - sit outside, beautiful view and not crazy expensive. I would go there solo.

Is that at least three days beyond your business part of the trip?

Are you able to do things on the business days of the trip? If so, in 3-4 additional days you can see most of the island.

    Otherwise 5-7 days extra.

    Lots of info:

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g29222-i37-k647862…

Thanks Kailuamom for your advice and for the massage link! I%26#39;m like you, I%26#39;d rather go by my own timeline and not join a group.

Dusty - thanks for the link, that%26#39;s extremely helpful. I%26#39;ll only be working for about 4 hours while I%26#39;m there, so half a day....unbelievable how awesome it is that they would fly me all the way to Hawaii for 4hrs work! So I was thinking, I would get there on a wednesday, maybe do something that night like dinner and a walk on the beach. Work early thursday, then leave on monday morning. So I would have 3 1/2 days.

I second Kailuamom%26#39;s advice. Avoid tours and go on your own. I think 3 days is minimum; if you could take a couple more, do it.

On the North Shore, check out Haleiwa, Papailoa Beach and Turtle Beach for the turtles. For a nice hike, stop at Turtle Bay Resort and walk the shore line toward Kahuku. About 3/8 mile, you%26#39;ll find a natural swimming basin that is drop dead beautiful. You can go 5 miles to Kahuku but you can go as far as you like and turn around.

The hike to Kaena Point from the south side is really beautiful, but you%26#39;ll spend an hour or so driving to the trail head. Probably not good for your 3-day schedule.

Definitely take the Manoa Falls Hike. It is almost downtown in the Manoa valley behubd the U of H. Short but a beautiful 65%26#39; waterfall and tropical forest.

I recommend you get a copy of Richard Sullivan%26#39;s Discovering Hawaii - Oahu. Website same name. Some really good info on places to see, hikes, etc. Again I think you%26#39;ll wish you had more time.

Good luck exploring one of the world%26#39;s great places!

Ok, this is weird - I agree with about 1/2 of what everyone has said in their posts...

I%26#39;ve gone to Honolulu frequently by myself and with friends and with family - it is not a scary place so long as you stay out of certain areas (watch ';Dog the Bounty Hunter'; for examples...lol)

First off, tours can be fun even when you book solo. You often get more personalized attention and have a better time than some couples (ever seen two novice MARRIED kayakers?). If there is some activity that interests you but you are not familiar with - surfing, kayaking, etc - definitely book a tour.

Going solo - hiking trails by yourself is not a good idea EXCEPT for Diamond Head. I%26#39;d stick to swimming/snorkeling only at beaches that have a life guard in attendance and stay somewhat near the towers - I know the usual rule is to always swim with a buddy but don%26#39;t feel like you can%26#39;t go in the water. As for history - the ';Disneyland'; version can be found at the Polynesian Cultural Center (an interesting but very watered-down view of the south Pacific) which you can do solo or as a tour and Iolani Palace (provided some Hawaiian separatist group isn%26#39;t staging a protest *again*).

As for how many days to stay - I think the question should be how many days can you afford? You could easily stay 2 weeks and barely scratch the surface.

Thanks guys! Kauai No Ka Oi, I think I%26#39;ll take your advice on booking a certain kind of tour, like surfing. You caught me off-guard when you mentioned not hiking by myself though, besides Diamond Head. Anyone else want to offer an opinion on this?

I would assume most hiking trails that have been recommended here would be popular, therefore at least fairly busy? I%26#39;m an experience hiker, so I know what to carry and as long as there are some people around, I%26#39;m thinking it would be safe right? If not, it would be pretty disappointing since all I really want to do in Oahu is take in the sights, sounds, views....Oahu%26#39;s natural beauty!

The hikes aren%26#39;t inherently dangerous... but they can be slippery and you can get lost. There are plenty of news reports of visitors getting confused, slipped off the trail, spending the night on the trail, etc. Most of the trails to the better views (and even surf spots) tend to be just a narrow, rocky path.

    I see, thanks for clarifying!

The activities I reccomended, I have done alone (except for Diamond Head). Diamond Head and Mokapuu Lighthouse hikes are both are very easy and popular/busy.

I would agree that you should snorkel where there is a lifeguard or you have a buddy. While having a buddy is better, you are just fine at Hanauma Bay, a tour would be kind of silly.

I agree that a Kayak tour would be great if you want to do something like that. I have heard good reports of Kayak tours to the Mokes from Kailua Beach.

    Casual Dinner Ideas?

We are so looking forward to our Maui trip in late October. I have made reservations for several tours and ';nice'; dinners. I am looking for ideas for casual, not too expensive, dinners near the sheraton. We like interesting, not chain like food. Thanks

    Holly

    Casual Dinner Ideas?

Hula Grill Barefoot Bar, Leilani%26#39;s downstairs, Lagoon Bar (Sheraton), Castaway Cafe (about 7 minutes north) There%26#39;s a start for you! Have fun

    Casual Dinner Ideas?

My first thought was Hula Grill%26#39;s Barefoot Bar. It%26#39;s a fun place with a great view. A good place to people watch as well.

We just mosey down to Whaler%26#39;s and eat at the Hula Grill outside. Call it laziness. Call it good food, view or music. It%26#39;s time for us to venture out and try new places ... but heck, I don%26#39;t want to. I just want to mosey down to Whalers%26#39;s Village ...

I don%26#39;t know how late the pool bar/grill is open at the Sheraton, but their food is very good, and it%26#39;s a great place to be lazy as well.

expand your horizons and drive down to kehei and try cafe o lei -- make a reservation --very popular and a very broad menu

BLBL -- I%26#39;ve forgotten. Can you explain how to %26#39;mosey%26#39;? Can just anyone do it? Can I simply %26#39;mosey%26#39; or do I have to %26#39;mosey on';? Must I always %26#39;mosey on down%26#39;; how do I get back? LOL LOL

How casual do you want to go?? If you happen to go to Kihei, one of the greatest places to eat is Da Kitchen!!

Sue -- Hawaii is all about ';mosey.'; You can mosey any way you want. I rarely mosey here at home, so it%26#39;s a real treat!

It%26#39;s not mosey on down in Hawaii.....it%26#39;s hele on down........

If you decide to go somewhere else besides Kaanapali you might want to try Aloha Mixed Plate in Lahaina. There are numerous restaurants on Front Street!!

You could try a fairly new restaurant in Lahaina called The Mai Tai Lounge. Sounds quite casual and quite good.

    MsFuzz - I stand corrected!

    Jeans in Maui???

My DH and I leave for maui in the morning, we are almost all packed and ready to go but do we need to bring jeans?

Any input would be great as we have never been to maui/hawaii before.

    Thank you

    Jeans in Maui???

    Aloha emtangel,

I wear my jeans and hoody on the plane with a sleeveless top and bring a pair of lightweight shorts in my carry on and the minute we get to the Maui airport I change into my shorts. The 10 day forecast for North and South Maui is 85-87 degrees daytime and the coolest at night will be about 75 degrees. The only time I see my jeans again until we leave is if we go to Haleakala for sunrise or hike in an area with heavy brush and mosquitos. If you wear them on the plane at least you have them if you need them and you don%26#39;t have to take up precious space in your suitcase.

    Jeans in Maui???

You%26#39;ll only need jeans if you are going to Haleakala at sunrise. They are way, way to heavy for general use. Take light cottons and breathable fabrics. Shorts, capris, T-shirts and light-weight tops/polos, Aloha shirts. Sandal, tennies. Bathing suit.

We wore jeans and sweatshirts on our first trip from Sacramento. Early morning November flight - so jeans, polo and sweatshirt. Our connection was through LA, so when we saw all the passengers get on the plane there in T-shirts, flip-flops, shorts, etc ... we realized that the blue jeans were a bad move.

I%26#39;m with the other posters. I love my jeans but I would never ';pack'; them for a Maui trip. I wear them on the plane just in case the cabin is kept cold. If we go on a sunrise trip up the mountain I can use them. Other than that, wearing long pants or heavy material is out of the question. I seldom even do t-shirts. I opt, instead, for very light weight aloha shirts. The ones sold on the mainland are a bit too heavy for me so I%26#39;ve been known to make a quick hop over to the Ross store in Kahului. They have a massive aloha shirt selection. 20 minutes and very few bucks later I%26#39;m set.

    Have fun!

    Mike

I live in jeans here from October to April. Then it gets too hot to wear them and I switch to lighet cotton pants. It has always been too warm and humid for me to be comfy in jeans in Hawaii in January...so about 16 years ago I stopeed wearing them on the plane or taking them along.

This is a tough one for me. I LIVE in jeans!!! I was hoping I could wear them (nice designer ones) when we go out at night with a cute shirt....DARN!!!!

    rellyrooly

    I LIVE in jeans!!! I was hoping I could wear them (nice designer ones) when we go out at night with a cute shirt....DARN!!!!%26gt;%26gt;

you can wear them if you like but you will really be more comfortable in something lighter like linen or shorts - you can wear shorts to any restaurant on maui in the pm

rellyrooly: You do realize that very few folks here have lived through a 115+ degree Arizona summer... If you can ';live in your jeans'; through that you might possibly feel just fine on Maui.

    Aloha

    Mike

this is just my opinion and you can wear whatever makes you happy, but designer jeans don%26#39;t look right in Hawai%26#39;i, although in Arizona is a different story.

If I wore any jeans here it would be a variation of classic Levi%26#39;s, no bells and whistles, stitching, designer name, any of that. Jeans are for working and traversing rugged terrain.

The only reason they%26#39;re needed in Hawai%26#39;i is for their toughness, to protect people from thorns, rocks, etc.., and the designer look is too city.

If you want to look island dressy with a cute top, you might try a sarong (lava lava, pareu), or lightweight pants.

That said, if I go to the mall, plenty of teenage girls in trendy jeans. The thing is, the majority of the teenagers all want to look like they live in LA or SF, not in Hawai%26#39;i. They don%26#39;t dress island style ... to them it%26#39;s not cool. They grew up here.

When you visit, it%26#39;s fun to go light with the clothing. At sea level, jeans are a heavy fabric, so when you wear them you kind of look like a fashion victim, as there%26#39;s no practical reason to be wearing them.

    I know, I know, it just hurts....(JK)

    Really though, I do know that jeans are really not island wear as I have been to Maui before. In fact, I found this to be true in places like Paris as well. You really would never see a parisian in jeans there either. It does scream ';American'; (not that it is a bad thing, just that you are not a local). I think I will ditch the jeans. You know what they say...';When in rome...';

I am just trying not to buy a lot of stuff before I leave and I am trying to figure out what I will wear at places like David Paul%26#39;s. Guess I%26#39;ll be shopping this week!

But a pair of black cotton slacks or jean-cut pants. Wear them with the same shirts you were going to wear with the jeans. They make them for men and those are easy to find if you can wear men%26#39;s jeans/slacks.

Or if it%26#39;s all too stressful, just bring the jeans and decide once you are there if they are comfortable. If not, those cotton slacks will come in handy.

  • Wailea Marriott vs. Maui Prince

I have read the reviews for both the Wailea Marriott and Maui Prince and cannot decide. My husband and I are planning our first trip to Maui in October (obviously last minute) for 7 days. We don%26#39;t have kids. We are looking to snorkel, hike, relax on the beach, and will rent a car. From the reviews, it seems like the Maui Prince has a nice beach, no extra fees, but the facility is outdated. The Marriott seems closer to other restaurants, which is very appealing, recently underwent renovations, but some felt nickle and dimed, and the service can be poor. Can anyone share their perspective or experiences that might be a dealbreaker for me? I realize there are things I might not be considering and I need to decide soon.

    Wailea Marriott vs. Maui Prince

We stayed at the Maui Prince and loved it. It%26#39;s very quiet and laid back, which is what we wanted. The room was nice, especially since we had oceanfront. If you want oceanfront, I think the Maui Prince is your best bet. Another thing we liked was how close the parking lot was to the hotel. We come and go a lot and it wasn%26#39;t a big hike to get from the car to the room.

The Prince is a bit away from anything else though. We had to drive to get to restaurants and shopping. There are a couple of restaurants at the Prince but we wanted some variety. The drive was only a couple of miles tho to get to other hotels or the Shops at Wailea so even that wasn%26#39;t too bad. But, if you want to be able to walk to other places you might be happier at the Marriot.

    Wailea Marriott vs. Maui Prince

Maui Prince has 80%26#39;s Japan-inpired architecture and simple furnishings that focus attention on the atrium, outdoors. Rooms have been refurbished. Look at recent guest photos. It is emphatically NOT glitzy marble and brass glamor. I did a review as a repeat customer in January, Bips was just there.

I have stayed at Four Seasons and Grand Wailea but prefer Makena. You might choose based on the location you prefer--Wailea (in the thick of the resorts) or Makena (remote in that it is a 5 min drive to Wailea or a 20-30 minute walk to the Shops there). Prince has a free shuttle.

We are leaving this Friday for the Maui Prince! We stayed there for our honeymoon about 5 years ago and loved it.. It depends on what you want but we enjoyed that it was a little further..felt more secluded.. the hotel was nice and quiet last time we were there..nothing glitzy as others have said but the beach is awesome, service was great and I felt very relaxed.. we debated this time about staying somewhere else jsut to try it out but as my husband always says, why fix it if it aint broke:-)..so we are going back to the Prince..

I love the location/beach of the Prince for swimming with the turtles. At the Marriott, you have to walk to the beach. Since I usually drive to restaraunts, I would choose the Prince.

My choice would be the Maui Prince too! It has been a number of years since we stayed there but it was beautiful...it was quiet and peaceful with beautiful gardens and great views of the ocean from the room! I wonder if they still have those louvered ';back'; doors. With the balcony door open the breeze used to whisper through and it was just beautiful! To some the more ';remote'; location might be a problem...to us it was a bonus!!

Okay - so here is a different perspective. We stayed at the Grand Wailea and the Marrott last May and thought the Marriott was so wonderful that we have already booked for next May. The hotel has been completely redone, the rooms are good size and very clean, the adult pool is by far one of the nicest in the Islands and the staff were 100 times nicer than those at the Grand. We did not feel nickeled and dimed although food service at the pool was not inexpensive(after all this is Hawaii). Although there is no beach directly IN FRONT of the hotel it is just steps to either side and there is a wonderful beach walk in front of all the Wailea hotels. I really loved the idea that I could walk up to the Shops at Wailea in the morning and get my morning coffee and bagel for a very reasonable price at Whaler%26#39;s little grocery. There are also some great restaurants at the shops and you don%26#39;t need to get into your car and drive, it%26#39;s just steps away. So my vote would be for an updated, great hotel just steps away from shopping and eating.

Novice we just got back from our 3rd stay at the Prince. this is our goto location on Maui, with a rental car it is the best out of the way location, no crowds, stay on the other side from the pool because of the construction going on on new townhomes 100yrds away. We would also recommend to check out ';Ocean Riders'; for snorkeling tours they are the only ones to go around the whole island of Lani, outstanding snorkeling and saw dolphins 3 times. The snorkeling on the beach at Maui Prince is great, hot spots are south end by the construction areas and by the tie up bouy for the sail boat that is in front of hotel (turtle hotspots as well) hope this helps most of all remember your on Vacation

Maui Prince is it for me!! They have the best Sunday Champagne Brunch on the island. Get reservations, you won%26#39;t be sorry.

I stayed at the Wailea Marriott this past May using points, and I thought it was a great hotel. The hotel is within walking distance to the Wailea Shops and to various beaches via a paved path in which the Marriott is on one end and Grand Wailea on the other end. The area is pretty, and I like the piped-in fragrance that you can smell as you check in. It immediately puts you in the Maui mood. The adult pool is a definite plus. The Grand Wailea seems like a great place for a spa day -- expensive but the facilities looked very pretty. The Marriott is also 5 minutes from Kihei for more dining options. The only negative is the stupid $25 (I think) daily resort fee.
