In general there are 2 different luau%26#39;s. Traditional Hawaiian or Polynesian review. Traditional is hula with chant and song. Polynesian includes fire knife dancing. Hotel luaus are for the most part tourist traps but are a less expensive option and tend to do a %26#39;decent%26#39; job. If you really want a good luau:

Traditional = Old Lahaina Luau

Polynesian = Feast at Lele

Sheraton has a decent luau.

Drums of the Pacific at the Hyatt has the best fire knife dancer on Maui.

Feast at Lele is good, but expensive.

Old Lahaina Luau does not have a fire knife dancer, nor do they have the variety of dances that the other luaus have.

thank you all, again. i now understand the differences in the shows. i seem to hear that the food at all of these shows is only average. is the food a standout at any of them?

steve

Hotels are average food for sure. Feast at Lele is done by same chef as PacificO and to me is a stand out. Never been to OLL so I%26#39;m not sure on the food aspect of it.

Sheraton luau was quite fun; attended it last summer.

It had fire knife dancers, and food and drink were perfectly nice although there was one dish that was over-salted but can%26#39;t remember if it was the salmon or pork.

I suppose if you really need a gourmet luau experience, you would pay premium for the Old Lahaina or LeLe ones. Never been to either.

Cheers.

we just booked the feast at lele. thank you all for your input to my many questions. i will be sure to post reviews and answer questions on my return.

We%26#39;ll be there the third week of Sept...I%26#39;ll let you know how it is!!!

we just came back and this was our 2nd visit. the first time we did the feast of lele by far the best.. the food is a bit diff%26#39;t than some may like but for us we like to try different things so we enjoyed it, it%26#39;s very intimate, table side service unlike traditional luaus.

I would highly recommend it for couples

the Old Lahaina Luau we did this time w/ family.. it was also another great choice..there is no fire dancer (which the kids wanted) but everyone enjoyed it. they had table side service for the cocktails but the dinner was buffet but it was very well organized . we all sat in nice tables w/a great view. we had one table /reserved for our whole family. the food was very very good.. lots of great choices

both were great.. i%26#39;d say for larger groups/families go to OLL. for a more intimate experience or just couples go to feast of le le.. both won%26#39;t disappoint

i have heard others are good and less expensive if you just want to take the kids also. as both these luaus are not cheap but you get what you pay for also

we attended the Royal Lahaina luau in june and really enjoyed it alot. the food was buffet style and very good. the kids even had their own buffet table with ';kid food'; . the drinks were good and they did offer plenty of refills. the price was alot cheaper than the more popular luaus but i still thought it was very entertaining. it is located within walking distance from the sheraton . if you plan on having a few drinks, it is nice to just walk back to the room. i dont see how so many drive in the state they are in when they leave. have fun!

Second vote for the Royal Lahaina Luau. For the price you cant beat it and it is within walking distance as the previous poster mentioned. It by no means is gourmet, but it was a lot of fun with lots of good food. Make sure to try Poi.
