We will be leaving on our honeymoon on 10/6, with our first stop on the Big Island. I%26#39;ve started looking at the weather, and it says rain for Hilo for the next 10 days. Not even a peek of sun...is this true? For those of you in the know, is it typically like this this time of year? I%26#39;m a little scared, and I see that Kona%26#39;s weather is much better!
Weather!!! Really so much rain???
Lots of rain is typical for Hilo; it%26#39;s on the wet side of the island. Kona will be warmer and much dryer as a rule. All of the islands are generally wetter to the north/east side and generally dryer to the south/west. You should also note that weather forecasts for the islands are pretty iffy things, especially a couple of weeks out. Even when rain is predicted it usually occurs in scattered trade showers that are small and blow through quickly. If you%26#39;re looking at weather.com, don%26#39;t. Don%26#39;t believe a word they say; they typically say rain for all the islands every day. It%26#39;s fairly unusual to get days of all-island rain.
Weather!!! Really so much rain???
Hilo never dries out. It has great weather for orchids and insects, but not so wonderful for people, IMO. It%26#39;s fine to *visit*, but I wouldn%26#39;t *stay* there.
Nicest lodgings on Big Island are in Kohala and Keauhou. If you want to %26#39;do%26#39; the volcano, book a night or two in the town of Volcano. (Too long a drive, especially at night, from the west and northwest parts of the island.)
