We just got back from 11 nights in the Kihei/Wailea area and the first 9 days the air seemed as clear as all the other 7 times or so we%26#39;ve been there since %26#39;87.
Imagine my surprise when I woke up on the morning of the 12th and couldn%26#39;t see Molokini or the northwest part of Maui, or any of the other islands that you can usually see. Definite smelly haze for the next couple of days. It wore us out and we were glad to be going home when we did.
I can%26#39;t seem to locate a website that shows the length of time, frequency, and concentration of vog on Maui. Does anyone know if there is a site where this info is compiled and kept track of? I%26#39;d like to know and keep track of this.
Thanks.
Pretty bad vog on Maui September 12 and 13, 2008
Hi PomMom,
Yes it was just awful this past weekend, wasn%26#39;t it!
From what you describe it was just as bad on the town side of Oahu. It was just watery eyes for me, but my 88 year old mother was complaining of headaches and I made sure to keep my 10 month old baby inside with the AC going. The problem was that there were not the usual trade winds to blow the VOG from the volcano over to south west big island. Just be glad you don%26#39;t live in Kona...it%26#39;s pretty much the norm over there. Fortunately some if not most Kona residents seem to have built up a tolerance and get used to it.

No vog on the island at all on the 15-17th. I did hear one of the Haleakala park rangers say ';good strong winds, we won%26#39;t have vog today';.
Can you tell me what vog is? I get the fog part....but what does the v mean?
Thanks,

V = volcano, volcanic fog/smog = vog
Got it - thanks!
