Are you staying somewhere that they have a concierge that might have a list of places/people?

Three years ago, my husband decided to surprise me with a renewal of our vows on our trip to Maui for our 25th anniversary. We were staying at the Ritz and they had given him the name of someone. Through e-mails he set something up.

The flowers that he had ordered for me to be in our room on our arrival were for another woman from her family. The person that was to perform the ceremony on the beach did not go to the agreed meeting spot. The concierge had to hunt him down. He forgot the leis and during the ceremony, kept called me by the wrong name. Most people would be upset over this, but stuff like this happens to us all the time. It just totally cracked us up. He was very apologetic and of course did not charge us. He was in charge of something big on the island that weekend and had been distracted. It still makes us laugh to this day. My husband will stil either call me by the name on the card or the ceremony name just to get a laugh.

Good Luck - have a wonderful time!

Thank you... I%26#39;ve been in touch with the concierge, we are staying at a large condo so she is going to get back to me asap.

Thanks for trying Maui Angels. They are friends of ours and would have been just what you wanted. I know there are other excellent choices and it will work out fine.

You will find those type people are very accommodating to your needs.

Please keep us informed on how it all goes and best of luck to you.

We%26#39;re renewing our vows in Maui in 2 weeks too! Try these folks. They%26#39;ve been very pleasant to work with.

We will be celebrating our 30th next month. You might want to contact one of the local churches to see if they can help. We%26#39;ll be on Maui %26amp; Kauai during our trip. Kauai during our actual date. I called the church near Poipu and they will perform a special anniversary blessing for us at Sunday%26#39;s mass. They were very helpful.

Try contact Rev. Juddee A. Kawaiola.

If you want a beach wedding whoever you use will have to get the appropriate permit, which takes about a week - 12 days. Juddee is a wonderfule person, very attentive, has all insurances and licenses. She is really wonderful and can handle everything for you.

I%26#39;m not so sure about the permit. Can%26#39;t seem to find it now but I read somewhere in the forum that it%26#39;s only required for a wedding not a renewal.

Aloha Kaiwahine,

I also thought permits were going to be required at Kaanapali Beach, but in response to ';Wedding at Kaanapali Beach Hotel'; Mzfuzz states that only State Beaches are requiring permits. I am sure that all Wedding Planners are aware of the State Beaches that require the permits. I would certainly check it out before making plans on my own though.

I know several people in the wedding business and they are getting permits for all of their beach weddings, AFAIK. It costs about $20 and so far I do not believe any permits have been denied. You just need to allow a week or so for the permit to be processed.

The DLNR website has a list if maps providing tax keys for the permit. This is a partial list of beaches where the permit is required, since not all of the maps are ready yet. But this list, so far, includes:

Mokuleia Bay area (Honolua Bay, Mokuleia Bay, Flemings Beach, Ironwoods)

Wailea Beach area (Wailea Beach Villas, Grand Wailea Resort, Four Seasons Resort)

Maui Prince Hotel area (Poolenalena Beach, Chang%26#39;s Beach, Makena Surf, Makena Place, Maui Prince Hotel)

Black Sand Beach area (Maui Prince Hotel, Black Sand Beach, Small Beach, Big Beach, Secret Cove)

Makena State Park area (Makena State Park - Big Beach, Secret Cove)

From DLNR FAQs:

In 2002 DLNR adopted administrative rules which state that “No person shall engage in commercial activities of any kind [on unencumbered public lands] without a written permit from the board or its authorized representative.” HAR 13-221-35.

Commercial activity is defined to include any activity for which compensation is received by

any person rendered to customers or participants in that activity, regardless if the base of the

commercial operations are outside the boundaries of the public lands. HAR 13-221-2.

In Hawaii most, if not all, of the beach area makai or seaward of the high wash of the waves is unencumbered public lands owned by the State of Hawaii. A good rule of thumb is if you are standing on a sandy beach or a rocky shoreline with waves lapping near your feet, you are on unencumbered state land.

REGARDING KA`ANAPALI BEACH:

';At this time, no beach weddings are allowed on Kaanapali Beach, Maui. Kaanapali Beach is under the jurisdiction of DLNR%26#39;s Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR). In order to allow beach weddings at Kaanapali, the Board of Land and Natural Resources will need to authorize a permit.';

BTW, I have heard that similar beach wedding permits in other states can cost up to four digits and are much harder to get.

You do not need a permit to get married, the commercial operator, i.e, your wedding planner or your officiant or your photographer, needs to have a permit. To get the permit they to have a tax license, required insurance, etc. This keeps the flaky, cash-only fly-by-night people out and it keeps a limit on the amount of commercial activity on our beaches.

It is not an effort to single out marriages. The permitting applies to any commercial activity on a beach.

You can have a small family wedding with your own pastor or a friend officiating without a permit. The only difference between a vowel renewal, a commitment ceremony, and a wedding is that you need a license to be legally wed the first time.
