Trip notes for Kauai visit 9/2-9/7

Aloha Everyone and Mahalo to all who so graciously answered my questions posed to plan our trip.

I tend to get really long-winded so I%26#39;ll break this into several parts.

We arrived via Hawaiian Air on Sept. 2. Just let me say that anyone going to Hawaii should NOT wear bluejeans on the plane as you will cook upon arrival at the airport. I had just about melted by the time we reached the hotel shuttle!!

Our entire visit was spent at the Marriott Beach Resort in Lihue at Kalapaki Beach and all I can say is that this hotel has got all the WOW factor that you could ask for in a tropical location. I have reviewed it for TA and so I won%26#39;t dwell on it here, but let me say that we were captivated by the resort.

Though it is looking a bit tired, the overall facility is just fabulous for ambience, you really fell like you have ';arrived in Hawaii'; here. We were told by someone at the Poipu location that the Lihue Marriott is slated for a significant facelift in the near future, so hopefully they will be able to bring back the luster to this grand dame.

I suspect that this makeover may be related to the Ritz-Carlton%26#39;s project which is next door.

Our first 2 days were spent getting into the island vibe right at the hotel. We spent Tuesday afternoon enjoying the enormous pool and had dinner at Kukui%26#39;s on property.

I have seen mixed commentary about Kukui%26#39;s, but we ate there twice during our visit and had no complaint regarding food or service. This evening I had the prime rib which was perfectly prepared and quite delicious, and the DH had the mixed seafood pasta which he thoroughly enjoyed.

On Wednesday, we again stayed on property- this time renting a beach cabana for the day ( $50 for the day and well worth it in our opinion). We enjoyed swimming in the bay, though I must say that I found the surf a bit rough for my liking; I was a little intimidated by the surf break being right at the shoreline with such a strong undertow, and was uncomfortable with the uneven bottom. I have been a swimmer all my life, including competitive, lifeguard, and instructor status and I was surprised that this beach is considered a good one for family swimming...I would not recommend this beach for kids unless they are with an adult and both are strong swimmers already- certainly not for a child under 9 or 10.

But! that is not intended as a slight on the facility- the incredible pool more than makes up for the bay swimming opportunity so there is definitley something for anywone here.

Our day on the beach was fantastic- beautiful weather and great service from the ladies at Kalapaki Grill. We had lunch from the grill- just burgers, but still delicious, and man! do they make terrific fries!! Our server on the beach that day was Alleson, and she was GREAT! ASk for her if you go.

Wednesday night we had tickets for the South Pacific performance at the Hilton. This was great fun. It is a community theater quality production with very good performances from many cast members. This is a dinner theater event, and the buffet provided was very good- ample food offered and a reasonable variety; there were 2 salads, fruit tray, rice or potatoes, sauteed vegetable mix, teryaki chicken or island fish, breads and several dessert options. 2 beverages came with the meal.

We were glad to see the Hilton property and were surprised by how casual it is. The beach here is definitely NOT a swimming beach for anyone- treacherous currents.

I will close here and continue with days 3 and 4 a bit later.

Hope this helps someone....

Footloose

I really think it depends on the time of year you visit. We were at the same beach in June and it was very calm. I really enjoyed that area. Glad you had such a wonderful time.

silly Oregonian - you are supposed to either have shorts in your carry-on or wear those zip off pants that turn in to shorts so that you don%26#39;t freeze on the plane or bake at the airport.

Well, Kauai No-

I%26#39;m actually an East-coaster and would never have thought of that zip-pants option! Good idea, though. I had read about not wearing jeans, but you know how planes can be so chilly....

Oh well, now i know better, and hopefully someone else will, too!! :)

Glad you had a great time at the Marriott. We were just on Kauai and stayed across the street in a condo. The property is very nice and will be nicer once it see it well deserved facelift.

When we were there the water was pretty calm...to bad for the surfers that were out there waiting for a good wave.

I%26#39;ll have to add South Pacific to our list for April. DH loves the show.
