Which book for Road to Hana: Mile by Mile or Maui Revealed?

We really only need a guidebook for our Road to Hana day trip. Which one do you think has better maps/mile markers? Which one rates the ';must-see'; stops better? Thanks

Which book for Road to Hana: Mile by Mile or Maui Revealed?

Although the locals dislike Maui Revealed, it is a very thorough book and allowed us to see so much of the island we missed the first time.

I found their locations and mile markers accurate, activities were very detailed, right down to saving on parking when you take a sailing trip.

The best snorkeling and beach reviews.

The restaurant reviews were spot on. We saved our book and will use it again.

Which book for Road to Hana: Mile by Mile or Maui Revealed?

Personally, I really like Maui Revealed. A lot of people here don%26#39;t. Many think it encourages tresspasing, and recklessness among other things. My feeling is that if you%26#39;re not a nincompoop, it has some great information to consider.

Definitely Maui Revealed. I have three editions. Great book. And don%26#39;t listen to the nay-sayers. ;-) Just be responsible, don%26#39;t trespass even if the book tells you to, and have a great time.

The Mile by Mile is much better for Hana. Has pictures that show exactly where to go, the trails, etc.

Hana, Mile by Mile was written by TA%26#39;s own Maui Designation Expert, JC Derrick. His maticulous searching and years of hands on experience, care and loving for the Hana area makes his book the ONE and ONLY you need for your journey to Hana.

Mile by Mile

Written by someone who cares and isn%26#39;t just exploiting you for your dollars. Has gone to great lengths to figure out where people are still welcome and permitted to go.

Follow Revealed and you and a hundred other people end up in the same spots, same time, looking for a hidden gem.

It%26#39;s not just that locals hate it, but that they mock people who carry it as being blue book clones or sheep, and there%26#39;s a stereotype of people who carry the book as being know it alls ... which is a disincentive to reach out and be friendly.

Some of the best ';gems'; in Hawai%26#39;i are the people ... so why alienate them by toting and following a hated book?

Before you guys get all riled and say YOU are not sheep, I am just reporting on what I hear people say who don%26#39;t read Tripadvisor and know nothing of the guide book argument. They just don%26#39;t think highly of blue book tourists, and consider them people who can%26#39;t find anything their book doesn%26#39;t point them to.

Real off the beaten path types don%26#39;t need books to tell them how to find the good stuff, so Revealed is associated with mass market tourism and all the damage it does.

Mile by Mile has a niche associated with eco-conscious and culturally sensitive.

I have both and both are very good. The Revealed book offers much help for much of the island, and lots of other good information on food, and activities. But it is a little sparce on the Road to Hana.

I really like Mile by Mile for the Hana trip. It gives me all of the stuff to see, rates it all by a 5 star system, and tells me where everything is and what to expect. It also tells me what to avoid -- like places where we would be trespassing or looking for trouble.

Considering how much this trip costs, I think the investment in both books to be very sound.

Wow, thanks for all the replies! I didn%26#39;t know there was such hostility (from some) towards the blue book...looks like I should go with mile by mile.

ah, sometimes I forget there are still folks who never heard of the Revealed controversy. But why would you, if you haven%26#39;t been here before or read the past topics? (use the search function if you%26#39;re curious about prior dscussions).

I wouldn%26#39;t bother to say anything if my dislike were strictly my own. It%26#39;s because the stink over this book and the stink eye to visitors thanks to this book has made our newspapers and TV on numerous occasions. There is a widespread dislike of the author, his book, and it spills over onto those who use it, even though people are generally too polite here to express that to your face.

Hana Mile by Mile gets my vote!
