What to pack...renewed

As we approach another season of travel I thought it might be a good time to renew this thread. Many newcomers to these forums may not have seen it and many oldtimers may have more to contribute.

';---One more thing. People who end up having a bad time are those who do not remember to pack their ';chill';.

These folks can be identified very easily. They are the ones without a smile, sweating profusely, taking pictures of mold and mildew, running from rats (or agouri, your choice) and complaining about the ';locals'; being so slow in serving their every need.

';Chill'; is very cheap and those who remembered to pack their%26#39;s can also be easily identified. They are sitting on the beach or in the pool. They usually have a drink in their hand and a smile on their face. They are very aware of where they are and are very appreciative. They can often be heard saying things like, ';please';, ';thank you';, ';I%26#39;ll have another, please';, ';who do I see to book my next vacation?';, ';it%26#39;s not snowing here, is it?';, ';can you use, or do you know someone who can use some school supplies';, ';where are you from'; and ';do we really have to go home?';---';

What to pack...renewed

Dutch...oh so true. DH packed his full can of ';chill'; this year and we had a great vacation! It normally takes him a few days to get into the island groove but this year it went much more smoothly.

What to pack...renewed

I agree with you on all except the sweating part. Most people do sweat at some point in Hawaii, especially when they first get off the plane, hit that humid air and are hauling luggage. Don%26#39;t hold sweat against people, Dutch. Chill. LOL.

Love this post!!!! When I read some of the trip reports or reviews, I think to myself ';You are on vacation - take it for what it is and make the most of it'; We were in Maui for the 06 earthquake and remember walking around hearing people complain about what an ';inconvienance'; it was. My DH looked at each other and starting laughing - we actually thought it was kind of a fun adventure. I agree on the sweating thing though - man handling luggage can be pretty hard work.

My sweating comment had nothing to do with heat and humidity. That cause for sweating is to be expected. There are however those who work themselves into a lather just trying to find something to complain about. These folks sweat over any little thing even while on the ski slopes!

They are fun to watch though. ;)

I%26#39;ll be chillin%26#39; in Kihei in 10 weeks!!!

Dutch

I%26#39;d have to agree with just about everything above, EXCEPT the rats! Rats on Maui?! Eek! I live in Manhattan, I run from them here, and will run from them on Maui, which hopefully will not happen!

Amen, Dutch!

Rats, thankfully we haven%26#39;t had an encounter. Actually the last place I encountered a true jerk was at a restaurant in Portland, Oregon. There was a very rude crowd at a table in back of us and one of the men kept calling the waiter ';boy';. ';Hey boy, get me another beer, hey boy get me some water';. I was disgusted that anyone could treat another human being this way. I haven%26#39;t seen any of this on Maui but I imagine the service workers see it on a daily basis.

Preach on Dutch!!! You are right on!

It%26#39;s why we return year after year - one step into the lobby of our favorite resort with the view of the bay - and the chill is on.

By the way, Cricket - those people in 06 complaining about the inconvenience of the earthquake were probably SoCal residents. If it%26#39;s not at least a 5 pointer it%26#39;s just a talking point around the office watercooler :-)

%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;

Hey! I%26#39;m from SoCalif and I don%26#39;t complain about earthquakes! I do admit that if it%26#39;s only a 5 pointer, it does just get a momentary pause and then a ';let%26#39;s move on'; kind of attitude :O I agree with the ';chillin%26#39;'; on Maui, or any other Hawai`ian island for that matter. I find my face hurts from smiling so much when I%26#39;m there! Optimum freedom to be myself, chuck the mascara and flat iron and just BE. And I also agree that there are those curmudgeons that will complain about something wherever they are, even at the most beautiful place on earth. Nothing you can do about those types, except move on . . . . .

Oh, about the rats ~ I learned that those wide metal bands around tree trunks are to keep the rats from climbing the trees. Yikes!

To clarify: ';Chillin%26#39;'; is something you do. ';Chill'; is an attitude you possess, or not. If you have chill it is difficult for anyone or anything to interrupt you chillin%26#39;.

About the rats. I originally posted this as a reply to a poster%26#39;s question asking, ';What am I forgetting?';. This was on the Castries, Saint Lucia forum. See link below.

At that time there was another thread discussing whether or not the rats people were seeing were really agouri or not.

I too am a native Californian. Moved to the Pacific NW in 1972. So, earthquakes are not much to me. We have volcanos up here. So Maui, having both earthquakes and volcanos should not be too disconcerting to me! I would not be disappointed to be sitting on the beach with a drink in my hand experiencing a small earthquake (doing no damage) while watching a volcano erupt. Or not.
