This is our first trip to Maui and our flight will be arriving around 10:30 PM (Kahului) We will be staying in a condo in south Kihei (Kamaole Sands). We plan to rent a car but my concern is whether we should drive to our condo that night. Is it an easy and safe drive or should we stay at a hotel near the airport?
need advice driving at night from airport to south Kihei
Easy-peasey. It%26#39;s a 20-minute drive on good, clearly marked roads. (Not especially brightly-lighted, but fine.) Put the windows down and enjoy the tropical night air. You%26#39;ll be there in no time. You may want to stop at Safeway enroute for some breakfast items. You%26#39;ll see the %26#39;Hilo Hattie%26#39; store just off Pi`ilani Hwy. Turn right. Safeway is open 24 hours.

It should be plenty safe! Make sure you are comfortable with the directions but it is all main roads,, well marked. If you are concerned about being tired after the long flight then by all means get something close for the first night. But keep in mind that Maui gets dark EARLY - much earlier than you are probably expecting. By 7 pm it is DARK. The sun goes behind the west Maui mountains and is gone. So if you are concerned about the darkness- it is really not going to be any darker at 10:30 than it will be at 7.
Seriously- it will be well marked, the traffic will be much less than you would have to worry about during the day.
turn on your lights and follow the signs -- as posted earlier -- all main roads and well marked -- dont worry --easy drive
Piece of cake. For this drive you%26#39;re basically on the flat land in the middle of the island.
the flight my wife and I arrived to Maui on was 3 and a half hours late, so it was dark when we landed. I had good maps and directions to our hotel Paki Maui on the west side of the island. While disapointing to arrive at night we did not have any problems finding or hotel.
10 minutes on the new four lane highway all the way from Kahului to Kihei is sooo easy
Hey Echo,
We just got back from 2 weeks on Maui. Flew Westjet to Kahului and got in at 9:50pm. Took the Hertz shuttle and picked up the rental car while my wife and daughter got our luggage. I pulled up to the arrivals area and picked them up. That saved some time.
We stayed at the Maui Kamaole condos which I believe are right beside Kamaole Sands. Here are the directions we were given by the owner of the condo we stayed at. No problem at all finding it, even at night.
Directions from the Kahului Airport to the Maui Kamaole (Drive time approximately 25 minutes):
*Follow Hwy 311 (Mokulele Hwy) to Kihei
*Turn left on Hwy 31 South (Piilani Hwy) for 4.6 miles
*Turn right at the 6th stoplight (Alanui Ke Alii) and follow it down to the ocean
*Turn left at the bottom of the hill (South Kihei Rd.) and drive 0.8 mile
*The MAUI KAMAOLE will be on the left side of the road 2777 S. Kihei Rd.
It was our first time on Maui and next to staying at the Lake O%26#39;hara Lodge in the Rockies, it was the best vacation we have ever had. Make sure you drive the Road to Hana. Stay in Hana for at least 1 night if you can. Wonderful laid back atmosphere.
If you can get reservations, go to the Old Lahaina Luau. Fabulous! Make sure you go up Haleakala crater and spend some time touring around the Upcountry area on the way up. Lots of great restaurants too. Our one regret was not making it to Mama%26#39;s Fish House. A co-worker said it was the best fish he has ever had.
If you have any other questions let me know. Have fun!
Thank you to everyone for your great advice. I do feel better now knowing that it is an easy drive to our condo. This is so great to get so many good tips.
