Place to Shop; Place to Eat Dinner

Hello. We will be staying at the Hilton Waikoloa. Can you recommend a place to pick up food -- groceries, meats, fish, beverages which is convenient?

Also, can you recommend a place or two to eat a NICE dinner -- it doesnt have to be fancy, exclusive or expensive. Something comfortable with good food with be perfect.

It would be nice to be close to the Hilton, but we are willing to travel for a good experience.

THANKS

As far as groceries I always like to recommend natural food stores or the outdoor markets, but they may require the travel you mentioned you might be willing to do for a good experience. Natural food stores are more eco-friendly/healthy and the outdoor farmers market are an experience in themselves. The closest supermarket will be off of Waikoloa Road. Take a left onto Queen Ka%26#39;ahumanu HWY. Take first right onto Waikoloa Road. Go about 3-4 miles and you will find yourself in Waikoloa. Supermarket on left in the back.

For a nice and tasty dinner with a comfortable feel there are A LOT of options. You may have to be more specific for this one. Seafood? Thai Food? Local Style? Something healthy? Environmentally friendly? etc, etc, etc

The best bet would be at the Queen%26#39;s Shops which just recently opened. I use to go all the way up to the Village Market years ago but since the new markets opened at Mauna Lani and the Queen%26#39;s Shops there is no need to drive the 7 or so miles up to the Village which the previous poster just mentioned.

Just north of your lodgings at Mauna Lani, there is a Foodland Farms which is nice, small, but well stocked. There is a Tommy Bahama%26#39;s and a Thai restaurant in that center as well. The market up in Waikoloa is larger, slighly lower prices, if you don%26#39;t mind the drive up the hill. The Queens Marketplace supposedly opened the new store there.

As for dining - well there are lots around at Kings Shops and Queens%26#39; Marketplace has a couple, but for casual - good food, great view there is Ocean Grill which is next to the pool at Mauna Lani Bay hotel - prices are mid-range and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Are you staying at the Hilton Waikoloa Village? Those are hotel rooms, and while you certainly can pick up snacks and beverages for use in the room, there won%26#39;t be a way to prepare any meals. Or are you staying at the Hilton Grand Vacations complex nearby?

Theres a store to pick up meats/fish within the queens marketplace??

I assume you are not staying at the Hilton as it is a hotel... Their Vacation club is a condo whch has kitchens.

The Queens shops are within 1 mile, and there are many little places to eat...food court and little casual, restauraunts

Up at the Mauni Lani is another market about 4 miles away

Finaly 8 miles away is my favorite...Waiakoloa Village Market up the hill... prices are not resort bases... outstanding meat and produce .

There are no healthfood or farmers markets within a 45 min to 1 hour drive...

Nice dinners on the Kohala Coast are what you would call ...upscale casual.. and based on your Ohio prices expensive. Figure dinner for 2, 2 courses split a desert and 1 drink, tip/tax foe 2 will be around $110 to $150. The entire coast is all resort

I would suggest: Roys, Merrimans Waimea, Canoe House, Tommy Bahamas, Browns Beach house, Kamueuela Provision company..... ( see left menu for details)

as excellent places that you described.

Yes, Lavaguyd, there%26#39;s a Foodland at the ML Shops, the place Aleka and LesRose mentioned, and it%26#39;s maintaining the prices of the Waimea Foodland.

Everytime I go to Waikoloa Village Market I%26#39;m dismayed to see how ritzy the prices have gotten. I lived in the Village 5 years ago when the store was a small and basic KTA, and now it%26#39;s really aimed at upscale wallets.

My family who lives in Waikoloa, cannot afford to shop at the local market now that it%26#39;s repositioned itself, and go to Costco instead, BUT they are impressed with the Foodland Farms%26#39; affordability.

I shop at Foodland in Waimea pretty often, and I like it.

We just came back and shopped at the Waikoloa Village Market. The prices were much lower than the markets at Queens Village. If you%26#39;re looking for organics we found a great Natural Foods store in Waimea just past Merrimans and the Parker Center. Don%26#39;t pass up the Farmer%26#39;s Markets--you%26#39;ll get the best produce there.

Interesting, my experience is just the opposite, perhaps it%26#39;s what we buy that differs.

Something that%26#39;s become ingrained living here is I no longer buy what I want exactly; I buy what%26#39;s on store special, in Safeway, the Club Card price, at Foodland, the Maikai%26#39;i card specials. It it%26#39;s not on special, I don%26#39;t even look at it.

And everyone in my family is the same.

Shopping this way, I think Foodland is more affordable. My normal store at home is Hilo Safeway, and coming from there I can assure you the Waikoloa Village Market prices are sticker shock city.
