Any remote beaches near Kona?

Hi,

I would love to find a remote beach near Kona that I could hike to. Even if it%26#39;s a long hike to get there.... Any beaches in Kona Coast State Park are out as they are closed the day we will be there.

Thanks for any and all ideas!!

I feel you frustration....you get here and its closed.

Ok....there are no remote beaches to hike to...all are very easu to get to, and have either a park or a resort on them... What is it you want to do at the beach...that might help me.

Old Airport beach... sitting on sand.. no swimming

Kahaluluu Bay......little sand great huge shallow reef/lagoon to snorkel,

Place Of refuge... rock cliff entry fantastic snorkel no sand,

Magic Sands ( La Aloa) some sand sometimes or lots of rocks, big waves for body surf... can be dangerous

A-bay..resort beach..Honum

Boat House beach at Mauni Lani... good snorkel if water is flat.

All will be busy....face the sad reality...

If I were you...I woild recognize that of all the ports you go to, Kona will have the least beaches, but the best, clearest, warmest water, most fish and coral. I would take the ships tour...the snorkel tour to Capt Cook and Place of refuge... It will be the best possible thing to do in Kona for the day

I have thought about the 1871 trail at the Place of Refuge. Not a beach but it sounds like there is plenty to see there. however, I%26#39;m thinking that due to limited time, we may stay closer to the downtown Kona area. I%26#39;m pretty sure down town Kona stays open on Wednesdays.

Actualy, I would like to snorkel with as much privecy as possible. We will be taking another snorkel shore excursion in Kauai, so we would like to do Kona on our own.

Thank.

Them in Kauai will hate me.... BUT the snorkeling in Kauai is pretty poor compared to any place else in the state. Kauai has tons to do.thats way better than snorkeling...hiking, Kayaking for example best in state.....

In Kona you can only get to the prime snorkel sites with a tour....thats the reality of it!!!

Walking the1871 trail in place of refuge is a bland walk.. no beach and no snorkeling... hot too.

Kahalulu bay will be somewhat busy... but even witha crowd it will be better than anything you will see on anyother island......

I will speak the the Mayor... and arrange for Kona to be open for you, we will even turn on the electricity and water too... ( we do that only for special people)

Snard, There are defintely places to go for just you and your other half, but they can be far, hard to get to, and some of the locals may not like seeing you there. The most important thing to consider is safety. Strong currents and hungry creatures in the middle of their mating season are out there. The best thing to do in my opinion (maybe slightly biased) is to join a tour or find a guide that knows the areas and the people in those areas. You may spend more money, but you will get what you are looking for.

Whatever you do dont enter the water in an area that ';looks'; nice. This is how people go missing. Do your research before entering the water in an unknown area.

Once again, thanks for all the helpful info!

snard, HD is right. BI has much better snorkeling than Kaua`i. Do your boat tour on BI. Snorkel off the beach on Kaua`i.

Aloha, I would suggest a snorkel tour on the Big Island, we have clear waters and amazing reefs.. It may mean changing your plans on Kauai.. but that is why you are asking questions now and planning ahead.

Are you on a cruise? If so, take the snorkel excursion they offer. Many of the others are not feasible due to timing. If you want to go on your own, Kahaluu is the most realistic snorkel option, though not private.

if you drive to Honokohou Harbor and go to the orht end, that is where the south entrance to Kaloko Honokohou National Park is. Open on Wed. Lots of beach to walk. Not great for swimming except maybe in the fish trap area at the south end. But more ';privacy'; for what that%26#39;s worth.

I%26#39;ve snorkeled all the main islands in different spots and nothing compares to the BI.

The 1871 trail is ok, but I wouldn%26#39;t do it as a special trip.

I will have to agree with HawaiiDan also. I know how you feel about not wanting to go on a tour because we like to discover things on our own and be on our own schedule and not someone elses. That way if we want to stay longer or if we aren%26#39;t happy where we are then we can go somewhere else and your whole day isn%26#39;t taken up and it is much cheaper.

I would suggest if you absolutely want to go it alone and are looking for the best snorkeling then the crowds at Kahaluu are worth putting up with and it isn%26#39;t like you will be bumping into them. Also, if you want the chance to snorkel with dolphins in the wild then I would try Honaunau (about a 45 min. drive south of Kona). Sometimes they are there and sometimes not, but even if they aren%26#39;t there, there is some amazing coral (we call it coral avenue) they are huge and many fish. The water gets much deeper there than at Kahaluu but if you want the chance to swim with dolphins then this would be my pick. I too have been to all the islands and we keep coming back to the big island because it is where the best snorkeling, clearest water, and most sea life is. Enjoy your trip!
