Costco card-is it worth it!

We%26#39;re still debating on getting a costco card for our two week stay. We would really only be using it there on the island. (nearest one to us here is a 1hr and half away). But my questions is this, would it pay for itself being able to buy groceries there alittle cheaper?

Not worth it unless you can use it at home.

Costco card-is it worth it!

I don%26#39;t think that it will pay for itself. The cost is $50 and if you use it once, you will not save a whole lot. I%26#39;d suggest hitting Walmart for groceries...I see they are adding lots of refridgerated items....then go to Foodland or Safeway for what Walmart doesn%26#39;t have.

I%26#39;ll be hitting Walmart first on our next trip in April.

I bought milk at Star Market and paid $7.50 for a gallon....that was a shocker. Most everything else was within reason for someone who lives in CA.

Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

Bear in mind that you can also purchase gas at the Costco here with a card - it is still a little lower than anyplace else on island.

Depends on how much you would be purchasing at Costco in order to make it worthwhile - things are definitely cheaper there than other stores - but you generally do need to buy in large sizes.

Wal-Mart has undergone a big re-vamp, but they are not a ';superstore'; with groceries - no produce, meats, etc.-- they do have a very, very limited number of refrigerated items (milk, hot dogs, poi, tofu) as well as bread, chips, candy, soda and wine. I wouldn%26#39;t plan on doing my grocery shopping there.

Big Save, Star Market, Foodland and Safeway are all other options for you in general.

Costco, as of last weekend, was only $0.03 cheaper on gas than the cheapest station in Kapa`a. (That would be the Shell at the V of Kuhio and Papaloa Road just north of Kuamo`o.) It definitely doesn%26#39;t make enough difference.

If you pony up for the upgraded membership, the gas is another 12 cts discounted (yearly rebate).

For two weeks for 2 people? I wouldn%26#39;t bother. You%26#39;ll be eating out some and it%26#39;s hard to go through their quantities anyway.

I was wondering the same thing. I heard there is not a Sam%26#39;s Club there, so can%26#39;t use our club card. We will be using our Dominicks (Safeway) card. That should help a little.

What is the price of gas? It dropped a little in the Chicago area. It%26#39;s ';down'; to $3.89 in the suburbs.

Thank%26#39;s everyone for your input! We have rented a one bedroom royal garden view at Kiahuna Plantation. We plan on doing quite a bit of cooking there. so we dont need to eat out 3 meals a day. Which one of the grocery stores has a discount card you can get before you shop and in what towns are they in. We need to stop somewhere to get provisions before we get to the resort. We will be there this friday!!!

And to top it off, i have been sick with bronchitis and the worst sore thoart and sinus infection i think i have ever had.Been taking antibotics for two days now and hopefully ,two more days of them will have me ready for Kauai! This has been a major bummer.

KD sorry to hear you are sick - hope it%26#39;s not going around Michigan :) We like to use Star Market in the Kukui Grove Shopping center. I find they have good prices and lots to chose from. I do have a costco card and did use it when we were there in Feb. You will love the Kiahuna, the grounds are so beautiful!

One word of advice - find out from your doctor if you need to avoid the sun since you have been on antibotics. My daughter was on them once - actually 2 weeks before we went to Florida and she ended up with nasty sun poisoning - and it was caused by the antibotic! Feel better and enjoy your trip!

It is unfortunate that you do not have a costco near you on the mainland.

We use costco for a couple of reasons, and we use it a lot.

Price for food is one of them. Actually, they have more than food. Just picked up three pair of brand name board shorts for $ 12.95 ea.

We also are impressed with the quality of food that costco provides, and I mean great stuff.

High quality filet mignon, tasty aussie lamb, and also we like the boneless, skinless chicken, the pre marinated ribs, and the frozen tempura shrimp. And,actually the fish is good, but check it out first by inspecting that it is fresh.

Salad greens are also excellent quality, and also a bargain compared to the local markets. Milk, eggs, fake eggs, cereal, are also bargains.

Might depend on how many meals you are going to be eating at your lodging. The price of eating out someplaces, could be a weeks worth of dinners, breakfasts, etc. just for one evenings dining out.

But, the others have a good point, as to that membership fee. And , it does make a difference when you live here, or cook in a lot as a visitor.

If your are going out to eat a lot, as already suggested, probably not worth it.

We will actually go to costco sometimes, just for one or two items. I go by early right after work at the gym...10 a.m., and in and out, faster than star.

KD, both Foodland and Safeway have discount cards. We find we do pretty well with ours.
