I have booked a table ';by the rail'; at Duke%26#39;s for our first night in Waikiki next Friday ( OMG did I say next Friday??!!) - but the only time they had was at 7 .45pm.
As that will be after dark, is there still a view from our table at that time, or should I try for an earlier time another evening later in our stay??
Duke's question
If you want to see the sunset you will want to go earlier on another day. Otherwise at the time you have now you will see the beach and people walking the beach plus the lights from the small condos at the base of Diamond Head.
I would go at about 6:30 pm to enjoy the last light of day and the sunset. It seems early but this is when I finish taking my walk every day and I usually see a nice pink sky around then.
Duke's question
Is there a bar nearby to (or at?) Dukes where we could sit and watch the sunset until our table is ready? Would we need to book that?
Sorry this is a seemingly dumb question = last time we were in Waikiki we had 3 little boys in tow and watching the sunset was not an option!!!
You can eat outdoors. The Duke%26#39;s Barefoot Bar is really an outside restaurant. I think their outdoor menu is great and not as $$$. Many of the menu items are the same. We love it. They do not take reservations. Great burgers, crab and macadamia nut wontons, hula pie ...
Duke%26#39;s indoors can be very loud and very hot.

There have been earlier posts that you can%26#39;t actually see the sun go down from Duke%26#39;s ... but you can see the sky -- and the water turned amazing colors.
We were in Waikiki in June/July this year and found the best place to see the sunset was down in front of the Hilton Hawaiian Village. We had a great view of it from our room but even better from the beach in front.
The only place to eat at Dukes is outside. We found Dukes late in our stay but when we go back next year will be going to Dukes more often. Walking thru the inside was quite hot and stuffy we found so sitting in and eating would not be pleasant I%26#39;d say.
For a perfect evening go to the House Without a Key at the Halekulani Hotel for cocktails, Hawaiian music %26amp; sunset and then stroll down to Duke%26#39;s for dinner.
Go somewhere else for cocktails at sunset, no need to reserve ahead. I also like %26#39;the Sand Bar%26#39; at the Sheraton myself. Nice spacious layered patio decks, live Hawaiian music the evenings I was there. You can just walk along the beach and find somewhere that looks good to you. All the hotel bars along this stretch of Waikiki will provide you a nice view of sunset. Then head over to Duke%26#39;s for your reservation. There will still be a twinkling lights view of the beach and ocean even after dark.
Why not go to next door Moana Surfrider, have a drink under the Banyan tree, What about the Hula Grill, also inthe Outrigger, the House Without a Key at the Halekulani might be the best option. .
Moana Surfrider hotel recently changed ownership. I%26#39;m not sure if the restaurant is opened again yet?
Was at Duke%26#39;s last night, table at the rail!! It was absolutely wonderful. At no time was it hot or uncomfortable. Still can%26#39;t see the sunset from there, but later in the year you will be able to. After dinner we walked to Kuhio beach and watched the waves come in, in the dark!! Magical night.
Lisa,, if you have a table on the rails it is not hot and stuffy there at all, since you are basically outside. I wouldn%26#39;t change my reservation at all, but perhaps as others suggested go earlier for a cocktail , either on the '; bar side '; of Dukes , or at any of the outdoor bars at hotels alongside on the beach. The Shereton has great views, BUT you will pay dearly for that drink . Dukes has the best prices for drinks on the beach,, and yes, they are not actually cheap either, but cheaper then other beachside places.
We found the food very good, order the fish of the day, and we also found restaurant prices fair deal.
