We went to Hawaii 10 yrs ago and enjoyed all except the flight 12 hrs total with layover time. Is there a smarter way to plan a flight to maui?
Flight Help
Since you%26#39;re from the mid-west (like us), there are not a lot of options. It takes so long to fly so far. You could try for a non-stop, but with all of the airlines making so many changes and adding on so many fees, your options are pretty limited. Find something to occupy your time to make the best of your travel time. Create a ';to do'; list, create a grocery list or bring along something to read or listen to (CD, Ipod).

We too are waiting for the invention of Star Trek%26#39;s %26#39;transporter room%26#39;.
Until 2007 we could fly direct from Chicago to Maui on AA. In February 2008 we could fly direct from Chicago to Honolulu on AA and connect to Maui. Next February we have to go Chicago-LA-Maui on AA. (Last I looked, United still has a direct flight from Chicago to Honolulu, but who knows how long that will last?) It%26#39;s so much better to get to Honolulu non-stop. I hate that extension of the travel day right in the middle of the trip -- middle of the night for us when returning to Chicago.
If you are interested in spending a few nights in San Francisco, Vegas, etc. you could do that and continue on direct to Honolulu. Returnng, I just want to %26#39;get home%26#39;.
You could take a cruise that departs from the west coast -- does mean some days at sea and a silly detour to a %26#39;foreign%26#39; port to comply with US laws.
It%26#39;s much easier to go to St. Thomas, etc. but we keep going back to Maui anyway!
NorthWest still has a direct flight from Minneapolis. You could look into connecting there. The flight itself is still like 8 hours but no layovers.
Your other option, if you have never done it, is to layover in say LA (one or two nights) and see the sights there before going on to Hawaii.
thats what it takes to fly.... I fly from Kona to the east coast several times a year....its a good 11 hours in the air of actual flying not counting layovers. and thats just 2 flights of 5.5 hours each.
SO unless you find a mach 2 aircraft the time is not going to change much ....sorry but distance is distance.
Taking a cruise is an other option they do 15 day rt cruises out of Sandiego and LA... that spend 5 days in hawaii.. they run about 1500 pp....pretty nice
Thanks to all for your help. I may have to check on the Minneapolis flight. HawaiiDan the cruise also sounds good - which cruiseline would this be?
The cruise.. is offered By Royal Carrib, Celeb. Princess, Holland America, Carnival, ....
I suggest Holland America....its 1300 pax ships are way nicer than the 2400-2800 ships
Suggest you go to vacations to go .com to see fare deals... they run october to May every year.
NCL does the only 7 day around Hawaii.

100.00 pp per day seems awfully cheap to me --dan can you post a link for this price on a 15 nite cruise
'; I may have to check on the Minneapolis flight';
It is flight numbers 809/808 there and back.
United has a direct flight from Chicago to Maui. We took that when we went a couple of weeks ago. It wasn%26#39;t as horrible as I was expecting - about 8 1/2 hours. I was prepared with books, magazines, and my nintendo DS
Lou......1087
I posted the link......';Vacation to Go. com'; You have to register for it and use the 90 day ticker
They are a cruise line broker for every cruise line in the world...world wide.... Discounts of 50 to 75% off criuse list are common......
right now the site isnt working too well as its in Houston.... have used it for years
This fall...I have seen prices from $1260 to $1700 for all the 14 and 15 day .
And another creative way to get to LA or Sandiego would be to get an AMtrack pass... and have a great scenic tour just getting to the port..... Hows that
Heck this past October they had the NCL 11 day Hawaii cruise around Hawaii and Kuiibati for an inside cabin....$549. pp.. ( $49.90 per day).......it was cheaper than staying home in Kona.....and you will never see that again....never.
To NCLs credit they were running a deal for the families of soldiers deployed in the war on terror...$325 for a 7 day cruise. I respected that.
