Lava Update - Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Update for Sept 20th 2008

At 2200 (10pm) Hawaiian Time there were 3 cars at the Jagger Museum Parking area. Vog (Volcanic Fog) was fairly thick in surrounding areas. Not good conditions for those with respiratory problems. Winds were minimal and the smoke plume went almost straight up.

By 0005 (1205am) rock clatter and small explosion sounds were heard by the 3 people standing at the lookout.

At 0107 (1:07am) there was another rock clatter/explosion heard followed by the smoke plume turning dark. Debre, ash, and dust from explosion is likely what blocked the red glow.

0120 (1:20am) the largest explosion was heard. No change in red glow.

By 0745 on Sept 21th the wind remained fairly still with vog all throughout the National Park.

Weather is expected to return to normal within the next day or so. Please do not let this update scare you away from the park. The night views are incredible and very audible!

Everyday the Rangers provide a free talk to the public at 1500 (3pm), 1630 (4:30pm), and 1800 (6pm). Expect crowds around the evening talk.
