We are staying on Maui for 9 days in February and would like to go to Oahu for 2 days, 1 night. Has anyone taken the super ferry instead of flying?
Do we need a car or can we use public transportation to get from the airport to Waikiki and then to Pearl Harbor, and Punchbowl?
Should we do a tour for the above? Anyone heard of Adventure in Hawaii?
How can we best use these two days? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Super Ferry from Maui to Honolulu?
Duck, you just stepped on a landmine.
The superferry is not environmentally friendly so is discouraged in these parts. Quite frankly it%26#39;s easier and quicker just to take an interisland flight anyway.
Super Ferry from Maui to Honolulu?
Please don%26#39;t consider taking the Superferry.
They are operating with little concern for the environment.
It would be better %26amp; less expensive to rent a car on Oahu for the two days. You would only have to pay for one night parking at the hotel as long as you don%26#39;t go past a 24 hour period.
Lots of Oahu info including a couple of driving tours:

its a wonderful...eco friendly twice a day trup thaT is loved by locals and hated by those who object to change.
It is a great scenic cruise and you can get cabs and busses from where the ferry docks in down town Honolulu
Flying at twice the price only saves about 1.5 hours when one considers check in, security and all the hub-bub of the airport. it takes about 3.5 hours and sals past several islands, has good food hurts nothing..... but activists adgendas ( nimby).
Search the site and its only handful of persons who object to ths great addition. 85% of all hawaiian residents want it...and need it
Next year there will ne a super ferry to the big Island too....4.5 hours.... I cant wait...
Have to agree with Dusty about renting a car for the two days.
The Bus we like for trips to Chinatown or the Aloha Tower but not much further.
I believe another thread had the times and the bus was like an hour and a half to Pearl Harbor.
I did have one question about the ferry wouldn%26#39;t possible rough weather in Febuary be a concern?
Eco friendly? Thats a laugh. 2X%26#39;s a day?, only on certain days. Cheaper than flying? Not yet. Scenic and calm? Tell that to the multitudes of people hanging over the side!! 85% acceptance rate? only on Oahu. They canceled more times last year than the days they traveled. Find out why they don%26#39;t even go to Kauai!! I won%26#39;t even begin to tell you what natural resources were stolen from Maui and tried smuggling back to Oahu!!
Don%26#39;t have a dog in the fight, and frankly it seems the vehement debate has quieted to a mere squeak lately; there is even a local group on Kauai which wants to begin protesting to make it come back having seen its utility for Maui residents and businesses.
No publicity on exactly where the Environmental Impact Statement is at in its process, it has missed several dates already (as they ALL do), and the attendence at public hearings around the state has fallen. Its kind of just become part of the way things are.
But it is not cheaper than flying. You can get R/T via Hawaiian for $140 nowadays (incl. taxes) but the SF is at $158.
Do know that many regular riders are really talking it up around town. My doctor, who splits his practice between Maui and Honolulu, brought it up out of the blue a couple weeks ago and raved on and on about how great it was and how much he and his wife enjoy it. A ';relaxing, first class experience.';
I think I will give it a shot later this month.
The only reason Oahu residents support the Superferry as much as they do is because they heard Governor Lingle lie over and over that Superferry was being singled out for an EA.
When the facts were checked, Superferry wasn%26#39;t being singled out. Her transportation director admitted that there were other companies that had to submit an EA. Lingle never admitted she lied or ';misstated'; as some believe.
Even today there are still many who think Superferry was unfairly being singled out. They support the ';poor'; Superferry because it was singled out. Even though it wasn%26#39;t!
The Superferry travels at 43mph in a whale population as well as other other ocean species. Experts state that anything over 25 mph is unsafe for ocean species. No other vessel travels more than 25mph.
I won%26#39;t ever take the Superferry.
The Super Ferry is a blast. Don%26#39;t listen to the ne%26#39;er do wells. There are many locals who cannot stand any idea that was not hatched by one of their local interest groups. The Super Ferry is fast, fun and doesn%26#39;t pollute- it is a modern ship. The 100%26#39;s of heavy cargo ships that go in and out of Honolulu monthly or the dozens of decrepit old sailboats in numerous Honolulu harbors are a different story, but not mentioned because da braddas are profiting off those businesses. These folks have an axe to grind, if it isn%26#39;t ';Super Ferry'; it is ';Hawaiian Sovereignty';.
Anyway, rent a car on Oahu, grab a guide book and go for it. Exploring Oahu on your own is much more fun than overpriced tours. Time your drives around the rush hour traffic though- its a bummer. And don%26#39;t be put off by the occasional angry brown man, there is still plenty of Aloha for everyone.
Didn%26#39;t know I was opening such a can of worms. Thanks for all your comments. I%26#39;m not sure how I feel right now about it. I%26#39;ll read more and decide. Aloha.
