Lava Update for Sept 21st 2008
The Kalapana Public Viewing Area was closed today due to poor air quality. It is expected to re-open by the tomorrow the 22nd.
Expect large crowds but a great show! Littoral explosions with red fireworks at night.
Be advised that current conditions do not allow for up close lava viewing. Closest proXimity at this time is from public viewing area about 1/2 mile.
What to bring:
-Closed toe shoes
-Water
-Flashlights
-Umbrella
-Padding for the okole
-Camera with extra batteries
-Tripod
-Binoculars
-Spending Money for souvenirs and grinds
From Hilo follow HWY 11 south to HWY 130. Turn on 130 and go to the end, past the gate and private residence signs. Follow newly paved road to end. Somebody will be there to help with parking. Open from 1400 (2pm) to 2200 (10pm). Last car in at 2000 (8pm).

CORRECTION: Lava Update for SEPT 14th 2008 (Not sept 21st)
Kalapana Viewing Area expected to open on Sept 15th.
