Aloha! Heading to Oahu next month for a bit longer stay than usual on that island (2 wks split between Waikiki and Kailua) and would love to take in some first class live slack key or other mellow local music more than once.
We%26#39;re NOT really lovers of the Don Ho style cabaret or extreme hapa haole stuff, nor of heavily amplified island bands. For slack key, a few of our favorites are Led Kaapana, Jeff Peterson, Keola and/or Kapono Beamer, George Kahumoku, any of the Pahinuis, Ozzie Kotani, Sonny Lim, etc. For vocals a few of our perennial favorites are Amy Hânaiali%26#39;i Gilliom, the surviving Makaha Sons, Olomana, Kapena, Na Palapalai, the late Dennis Pavao and of course Iz. Love the old falsetto style vocals. Of course we always enthusiastically welcome any names new to us whose music is along these lines!!
Other than House Without a Key, which we always enjoy, what Oahu venues can you suggest for this type of good music these days? My info is a couple years out of date, as are slack key mentions on this board. Mahalo!
Good island music?? Oahu slack key/other local music venues?
Go to mele.com. Off to the left is a ';button'; for a concert schedule by date. Scroll down to the time you%26#39;ll be in Oahu.
Also check Jeff Peterson%26#39;s website. I am blanking on the name of the French restaurant where he plays regularly. Also Chai%26#39;s Bistro brings in name artists. Also look up the schedule for the Hawaii Theatre.
Go to the websites for the Moana Surfrider and the Royal Hawaiian (RH after 12/31/09) and take a look at their calendars. Usually, about a month in advance, they post the names of the artist playing under the Bayan Tree (Moana) and Mai Tai Bar (RH).
The Royal Hawaiian Band puts on a great concert, and their schedule should be on the City of Honolulu site.
This should keep you busy for a while! Good luck!

Oops! The concert schedule button is on the right.
Chai%26#39;s Island Bistro, billed as the best Hawaiian Music offered at Aloha Tower Marketplace. Venue normally starts at 7 pm and runs until 9 to 9:30 pm.
As a example, this week (lucky I just saw it in Dine-Out) beginning tonight is the Brother%26#39;s Cazimero%26#39;s (showtime from 7 to 8:15 p); Thursday night is Raitea Helm (2008 Grammy Award Nominee); Friday is Tony C (Na Hoku Award winner; broadway singer in Miss Saigon) and Saturday is Na Palapali (Na Hoku Award winner); Sunday is Sister Robbie (slack key) and Monday is Jerry Santos (Olomana) with guest artist, Na Hoku Best Male, Best Song %26amp; 5 more awards Hoku Zuttermeister.
A good arare of music and I believe Jeff Petersen plays with Raiatea.
Give Chai%26#39;s a call when you arrive and see who is billed for the week. A good venue and good Pacific Rim Cuisine.
Hope this helps ......
That%26#39;s all very helpful -- mahalo to all of you!
Oh boy, virtually all the names you mention at Chai%26#39;s ring MY bells. I%26#39;d enjoy seeing any of them. I see that October info is not up yet, but the current month%26#39;s schedule is here at www.chaisislandbistro.com/entertainment.html. What a tantalizing roster! How crowded are these performances typically, how far ahead do you need to book, what is the scene like, etc? I%26#39;d certainly like to know more about that option!
Unfortunately www.mele.com only gives dates a couple weeks out, so I%26#39;ll keep checking back there. I always like that website anyhow, but had never noticed that feature.
Just FYI for any others wanting similar info, here%26#39;s the Moana%26#39;s general info: moana-surfrider.com/flavorsofislandmusic.htm.
mele.com has concerts well into 2009. Want to take another look?
Here%26#39;s Led%26#39;s schedule:

Vagabondage .... I will be visiting at Chai%26#39;s tonight and will get you info on October%26#39;s performing list at Chai%26#39;s Island Bistro.
Chai%26#39;s normal schedule is: Sunday is Sister Robi; Monday is Jerry Santos w/Hoku Zuttermeister; Tuesday is Robert Cazimero on piano; Wednesday, The Brother%26#39;s Cazimero and at the present on open night with guest performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. I will get you a list.
Jeff Peterson plays at Michel%26#39;s at the Colony Surf Restaurant. Also, on Thursday nights at the Marriott Waikiki Beach Hotel, Aunty Genoa%26#39;s grandaughter resides with the Keawe Ohana. Alot of falsetto and guest performances. The Pahinui%26#39;s also perform weekly at The Marriott, don%26#39;t know the night. Kapena plays at Duke%26#39;s, Wahoo%26#39;s Fish Taco%26#39;s at Victoria Ward Complex, Sheraton Waikiki Poolside on Fridays. Other than SW, don%26#39;t know the date and times for other venues.
Will get back to you with scheduling from Chai%26#39;s.
';Lucky you live Hawaii';
Audy Kimura plays at Hy%26#39;s Steakhouse in Waikiki. Wednesday through Saturday, I think.
We%26#39;ve been listening to some music that has Amy and Willie K togather great stuff also some of Darlene Ahuna but can%26#39;t find a website for her.
You need to cruise by mele.com quite often as dates can be added without much leadtime.
Mahalo nui loa again for more really helpful info! I%26#39;ve been under the weather for a few days but have just now checked once again at the various websites you all have kindly provided and will keep doing so.
Islekane, I would be especially happy to get a sneak preview of the Chai%26#39;s schedule for October, as it%26#39;s not online yet and I%26#39;m guessing won%26#39;t be for another couple of weeks.
I don%26#39;t have even a drop of Island blood or history (other than many enjoyable trips to the islands), and in fact am a Scandihoovian grandma through and through, but I absolutely RELISH good Hawaiian music and would happily spend most nights of each trip soaking it up. I%26#39;ve also found there%26#39;s no cure for the winter blahs here in the Pacific Northwest like firing up my trusty iPod with its countless hours of my custom island mixes -- so thanks to all of you for abetting my addiction!
